| R&B Artist Spotlight: Jazmine Sullivan Posted: 16 Apr 2021 08:40 AM PDT Music Style: Contemporary R&B with a blend Neo Soul, Jazz, Doo-Wop, and Hip-Hop. If someone describe Jazmine Sullivan using one word, that word would be underrated. I feel like Jazmine isn't really given her props in R&B music or music in general and I have a theory why. Jazmine debuted in 2008, a time where the music landscape was changing. Music was moving from R&B/Hip-Hop format to a more dance electronic club sound. R&B wasn't able to properly adapt to the new sound because the formula for an Electronic R&B blend hasn't really been properly perfected and replicated yet. So when Jazmine can on the the scene, R&B was already having trouble keeping up. It also didn't help that the forerunners of the genre (i.e. Usher, Ne-Yo, Kelly Rowland, Chris Brown, etc. ), crossed over onto the electronic club pop. Also, many acts that debuted in the early 2000's (Ashanti, Amerie, Bobby V., Mario, Ciara, etc.) were having label issues that hurt their commercial success. So, Jazmine debuting during this time most likely hindered her chances at becoming a bigger force, however this is to no fault of her own. I'm gonna make sure that she gets her flowers now. Jazmine's sound was actually something very different in R&B music at the time. Her songs often contain various elements such as orchestral sounds (Bust Your Windows, Lions Tigers & Bears), hip hop based (Call Me Guilty, Price Tags, Holding You Down (Going in Circles)), reggae (Need U Bad, My Foolish Heart), piano based balladry (In Love With Another Man, U Get On My Nerves), retro soul (10 Seconds, Good Enough, Excuse Me), jazz (One Night Stand, Fear, Live a Lie, Switch), funk (Luv Back, Stanley), neo soul (Forever Don't Last, On it, Pick Up Your Feelings), singer/songwriter (Girl Like Me, Lost One), and alternative r&b (Insecure, The Other Side). Based on some features that she's done, Jazmine shows that she can work with a disco (Hard To Believe from Kindness' Something Like a War), hip house (Mediation from Goldlink's At What Cost), or a downtempo alt r&b sophisti-pop sound (Sideline from Niia's I). One of the best things about Jazmine Sullivan is her voice. Jazmine is probably one of the best vocalists in R&B music and music in general. Just take a look at video of her singing at age 11. There mere fact that her singing ability was already that developed at such young age just shows that she was born to be singer. Jazmine not only has a massive range, she also knows how to use her voice. Listen to this acoustic version of Pick Up Your Feelings, she's moving from low notes to high notes with such ease. I feel like a lot of people misconstrue that having a big vocal range equals a good singer. While having a big range does gives more room for agility, it does not equal being a good singer. I noticed that there are many talented singer with huge vocal ranges, but I wouldn't really consider them good singers because they don't know how to use their voice. Like someone said "the voice is an instrument, you have to know how to use it". Jazmine knows how to use her voice, she even incorporates different style of singing like jazz (Stupid Girl, Live a Lie, Forever Don't Last), doo-wop (If You Dare, One Night Stand, My Foolish Heart), or even full blown out soul (Girl Like Me, In Love with Another Man, Masterpiece (Mona Lisa)). She even did some scat singing in a more retro soul rendition of Pick Up Your Feelings. Jazmine is a beast vocally and whenever you listen to her songs, you will be amazing at her vocal talent. One aspect about Jazmine Sullivan that I believe isn't talked about much is her writing ability. Jazmine's approach to writing is pretty unique for an R&B artist. Jazmine's lyrics often have some sort of storytelling element to them. Her song Call Me Guilty tells a story of an abusive relationship that ended with the woman killing her abusive husband. Redemption details the perspectives of both a husband and a wife in toxic relationship. Mascara is a statistical song that shows the reality of the IG Model/Hustler lifestyle that people don't like talking about. Silver Lining is about single young father that turns to desperate measures to provide for his children. Jazmine's lyrics take situations and shows them in gray format. Not everything in this word is black and white, which is something that I believe needs to emphasized more in this word. Jazmine does this in her lyrics which really shows her strengths as a writer. Jazmine lyrics also deal with the concept of womanhood. She often writes about various scenarios that women and even men can relate to. In Girl Like Me, she details the conflicting messages that society gives women. Society (mostly men) say that women need to be classy, but at the same time, they big up the type of women that wouldn't be deemed as "classy" based on societal standards. It really details the hypocrisy that breeds toxic mindsets in both men and women. Girl Like Me is one of my favorites because she really tackles this subject and gives the stuff that we need to hear. Jazmine's lyrics are not only good, they really hit. Lost One is a good example of this. People have said that the song really hits when they going through it. Some of Jazmine's best lyrics can be seen in Bust Your Windows, Call Me Guilty, Brand New, Lost One, and Mascara. If your in the mood for an R&B album with influences of reggae, orchestral sounds, and pop soul listen to her album Fearless. If you like retro soul with 90's hip-hop elements listen to Love Me Back.
