An Analysis of Kendrick Lamar's DAMN.

Posted: 11 Apr 2021 07:59 AM PDT

Here's the link.

I posted the first edition of this analysis about a year ago, and it was 93 pages long. However, that first edition was my first draft, and I was too lazy to edit it and too arrogant to realize I should have edited it. People tore it apart, criticizing it for being too obvious and far too long, and most of it was legitimate. I promised myself I would fix it, but it took far longer than I expected to do so. Life got in the way, and this was a monumental task to accomplish. Turns out there was even more to the album than I previously assumed, so I tried to condense it as much as I could, but the extra context made it still end up being a whopping 89 pages.

I am not going to sacrifice the length, as I would rather it be extremely in-depth than broad and vague, but short. As such, I added a table of contents for people who wish to read the analysis of only a single song. Furthermore, there is a summary of both the standard and reverse narratives of the album at the end (also included in the table of contexts) for people to read as a shorter version. Since this is a Google Doc, it will be updated over time if I find more information or feel that some things can be improved, but I consider this to be my finalized analysis.

And if you're wondering whether or not it is 89 pages of filler, it isn't. I tried to cut out everything that was unnecessary or obvious while condensing the rest; the album just has tons of things to flesh out.

I'd appreciate feedback, even if it is just on the summary (a page and a half long) or a single song.

Edit For Clarification:

I certainly did not convey this properly in the introduction, but the goal of the analysis is more akin to how Genius annotates songs than to an academic paper delving into a song's theme and impact. I'll edit the introduction for sure, but my goal is to try to completely analyze the album. Because there's an hour of content, and Kendrick pours tons of meaning into every line, verse, and chorus, I don't see a way to fully flesh out the album without being super long.

My inspiration was the Dissect Podcast, which does essentially the same thing in audio form. Ironically, I decided to write this because I thought the podcast (like 24 hours long per album) was too long. I also disagreed with tons of their conclusions.

I hope this gives people a bit more clarity on the actual goals of the analysis. I certainly don't expect anyone to read this all, I just want it out there so people who wonder what a certain song, line, etc means. Genius and Dissect are the only ones to try this as far as I know, and I disagree with both. I'll try to convey this better in my introduction, and if you have more criticism please tell me, I want to improve this as much as I can.

Also, if you don't intend on reading the full analysis top to bottom, I highly suggest that you don't start at the beginning; DNA., YAH., and ELEMENT. are among the most basic songs on the record and you'll feel like you're wasting your time if you're not trying to understand the whole narrative.

For those who don't want to read a lot, I would recommend reading the summary at the end first, then reading the sections on certain songs like BLOOD., PRIDE., LUST., XXX., and FEAR., since those are quite complex. My mind was blown as I figured the album out while I wrote, and I would love it if other people could have the same experience.
