Today we'll be listening to Chapter 2: World Domination by Three 6 Mafia

The mighty Three 6 Mafia are very frequently brought up around these parts for their influential style and sound, but very rarely do I see any album other than Mystic Stylez or Most Known Unknowns get brought up. Chapter 2: World Domination, their third studio album, dropped in 1997 and featured their first taste of real fame, being their first Gold record and containing the hit "Tear Da Club Up '97". At this point, Triple 6 did not abandon the dark horrorcore-esque sounds of their early work, but they were moving forward and evolving that sound which proved to net more mainstream success. DJ Paul & Juicy J start to make beats that you would be hearing 20 years later, it's fascinating how well this album aged and how much hip hop moved in a direction that Three 6 had perfected decades ago. Songs like "Tear Da Club Up '97" and "Hit A Muthafucka" could be released today and nobody would bat an eye.

Personally, this album marks a perfect blend of my favorite aspects of Three 6 Mafia; the in your face high energy Three 6 on their later records and the hellish production and subject matter of their earlier work. My favorite joint on this record is the Lord Infamous solo track, "Anyone Out There". This song pairs phenomenal storytelling and vivid imagery with Lord Infamous' high skill over one of DJ Paul & Juicy J's most guttural and layered beats. An absolute must hear for fans of horrorcore music. Another aspect of this album that makes me gravitate to it over other Three 6 releases is the lineup of members, we get all of my favorites on this album before they dropped out. Lord Infamous, Koopsta Knicca, and Gangsta Boo are all on this and giving top tier performances.

Overall, this album is just a fantastic and important chapter in the history of Three 6 Mafia, and as a huge fan it culminates into my second favorite album of theirs, a must listen to those who enjoy any of their other work and or southern rap in general.

Been about 5 years since Jay-Z dropped this album. How does everyone feel about this release? Has your opinion been altered since 2013? How does it compare to the rest of Jay's discography?

I personally feel that this album aged like fine wine. I feel like this could be the last album from Jay where he goes completely berzerk and braggadocios. The title track with Justin Timberlake is a song I can never get out of my head. Tom Ford is a definite banger from front to back. Fuckwithmeyouknowigotit was a summer anthem back then. The Frank feature on Oceans is silk and mesmerizing (but what Frank feature isn't lol). F.U.T.W is another summer banger from him on this project. The Nas feature on BBC is great. Nickels and Dimes is a melodic closer to Jay's 12th solo work.

[Discussion] Freestyling is all about adapting your flow to a random beat and not the lyrics

Now I know this is likely common knowledge/ obvious for, but I've seen many people get the idea of freestyling wrong for so many years, both on the internet and real life.

I often see it get mistaken for coming up with new lyrics on the spot, usually in the form of the complaint that the freestyle "was obviously pre-written." The ability to come up with random lyrics is usually called 'off the dome' and looks something like this or this

Actual freestyling deals with adjusting the flow of a verse to match a random beat. One example is Sway's Five Fingers of Death, where the whole point is to match your flow to a beat and then adjust it as the beat changes every thirty seconds or so. It's totally fine for the freestyle to be prewritten and part of the challenge of the Five Fingers of Death is to choose which verse/ couple of bars would match best with the different beats.

I do think that most freestyles should be new lyrics and not rehashed, its lame to just do a verse from one of your songs but it's excusable if you're changing up the flow. Sorry Lil Pump, holding a wad of cash to your ear doesn't change the fact that your freestyle which was just a verse from Eskeddit was horrible and unintelligible, if you're going to copy yourself you should at least do it well.

Also, The Game is a bitch for using the same few bars and trying to hide it as a free style without even changing his flow. It's the worst of both worlds.

Edit: I did a terrible job with this post lmao. Like I said with Sway's Five Fingers, a huge aspect of freestyling is combining bars and rhymes and making them transition well without practicing it. The whole freestyle usually isn't written out but rather pieced together so in some aspects it's still on the spot. The difference is that some people think freestyling is literally coming up with the whole thing right then and there, whereas usually its piecing together a bunch of lines that they already have and making it match well with the beat.

A truly revolutionary album, combining a political message as relevant then as it is now, ahead of it's time production, and rap's most commanding voice.

The Bomb Squad's production is experimental, noisy, abrasive, and timeless. Layering sample after sample to create a soundscape as chaotic as it is detailed.

Chuck D brings the most hard edged and confrontational voice in the history of rap, and Flava Flav is it's most charismatic. Chuck doesn't rhyme for the sake of riddlin, he rhymes as a means for change.

Drake's "Scorpion"'s sales numbers will likely take a hit as the album will be the first to be affected by Billboard's new weighted metrics.

In early May, Billboard finalized its new weighting system to calculate the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 albums charts. The changes are set to be implemented starting June 29, making Drake's upcoming fifth studio album 'Scorpion' one of the first test cases for the revamped method of measuring streaming numbers.

According to the new metric, Billboard 200 is now divided into two categories. On both charts, plays from paid subscription services such as Apple Music, TIDAL, and Spotify's subscription tier are now assigned greater weight than streams on free, ad-supported services such as YouTube and Spotify's free tier.

Drake has traditionally been one of the most streamed artists. Prior to the release of Post Malone's 'beerbongs & bentleys,' the Toronto rapper held the record for the biggest streaming week thanks to his 2017 playlist 'More Life.'

Although Billboard's new weighting metric will likely mean 'Scorpion' has lower overall streaming numbers, Drake may not be affected as much as other artists. He has a strong history with Apple Music dating back to his Beats 1 Radio show OVO Sound.

Thanks to his position as one of the biggest artists, Drake is still a safe bet to score his eighth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album charts based on the sheer volume of his streams alone.
