On "Hate Me Now", did Nas say "guess it's just inferior man" or "guess it's just the theory of man" or "guess it's just the fury of man" on the 3rd verse?

Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:15 AM PST

https://www.reddit.com/r/nas/comments/k36aca/on_hate_me_now_did_nas_say_guess_its_just/ <- could not come up with consensus

Niggas fear what they don't understand

Hate what they can't conquer, guess it's just (the theory of/inferior/the fury of) man

Became a monster, on top of the world, never fallin'

In any case, rapgenius, a lot of lyrics sites, hip hop karaoke video games, and hip hop quotables may have gotten it wrong https://genius.com/128599 (I need more people to vouch in consensus what was said.)

Have a listen: https://youtu.be/dKSJN3WWR3E?t=270

Original mix: https://youtu.be/AhKugoNS85I?t=233

acapella: https://youtu.be/zrYnCcsSPqs?t=222

can't seem to find concert footage where he spits the last verse to cross-validate

highlights of discussion:

  • "Guess it's just the theory of man" might be ruled out even though it is transcribed on a dozen websites as that, printed as digital posters, creating a psuedo-Mandela effect when people during dial-up days used to print off Nas lyrics like J Cole and read them from bad transcription sites. When replaying the lyrics, some people still hear "theory" based on pre-conceived lyrics-sites bias, even though some do not.

  • "Guess it's just inferior man" might be correct, even though it's stated with weird poetic grammar, but weirdly-stated poetic grammar is commonplace for hip hop. Why would it be "inferior man" if "inferior men" would be more correct given there's more than one person who is inferior? Then, "men" and "understand" would not rhyme as much. Nas did say "inferior" on "no idea's original"

  • "Guess it's just the fury of man" sounds in-pocket with the lyrics and overall message, because the "fury of man" would make sense when man become a monster on the next line. "inferior" or "theory" of man would not make people become monsters, but "the fury of man" would. Nas did say "blind fury" on "affirmative action"

  • Nas was rapping with his chipped tooth, as seen in the "Hate Me Now" video, so a lot of "th-" and "f-" sounds similar

I'm not trying to bias anybody but hear for yourself and lemme know what you hear, thanks

Part 2 (on their Patreon)

Episode 24-25 - Sorry To Podcast You with Boots Riley

Boots Riley is best known as the screenwriter and director of hit film Sorry to Bother You, and co-founder of radical Oakland hip-hop group The Coup, but he's also a communist organizer who has been fighting for a more equal world since he became engaged with efforts to organize a local farm workers union at age 14.

We spoke to Boots about what the radical tradition of activism can teach us about where the American left should go from here, his feelings on Jim Clyburn's claims to progressivism, the "defund the police" slogan, the power of withholding one's labor, and more.

Part two of the interview is available to subscribers on our Patreon. It includes our conversation about fellow Oakland native Kamala Harris and the role identity politics plays in rehabilitating the records of corporate Democrats, more on Sorry to Bother You and the role of art in activism, and Boots' thoughts on Ice Cube's recent political efforts: In short, the juicy juicy stuff. If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

[DISCUSSION] Who are some rappers whose influence far outweighs their popularity?

Posted: 28 Nov 2020 12:22 PM PST

I mean artists that have had a clear, large impact on hip hop music, despite not receiving as much mainstream success/recognition as their influence might suggest. Names that come to my mind are Lil B, Chief Keef, Spaceghostpurp, and, until fairly recently, Young Thug.
