[DISCUSSION] Eric B. & Rakim - Paid in Full (Six Months Later)

Posted:

Background

Paid in Full is the debut album of American hip hop duo Eric B. & Rakim, released on July 7, 1987, by Island-subsidiary label 4th & B'way Records. The duo recorded the album at hip hop producer Marley Marl's home studio and Power Play Studios in New York City, following Rakim's response to Eric B.'s search for a rapper to complement his disc jockey work in 1985. The album peaked at number fifty-eight on the Billboard 200 chart, number eight on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and produced five singles: "Eric B. Is President", "I Ain't No Joke", "I Know You Got Soul", "Move the Crowd", and "Paid in Full".

Reception

In a contemporary review for The Washington Post, Mark Jenkins highlighted the single "Eric B. Is President" but was unimpressed by the rest of Paid in Full: "Its beats are monotonous, and the attempts to take 'jazz and the quiet storm' and 'convert into hip-hop form' fall flat." Robert Christgau from The Village Voice said it has "four groundbreaking masterworks" in "I Ain't No Joke", "I Know You Got Soul", "Paid in Full", and "Eric B. Is President", but was less enthusiastic about the other six songs: "They're pure, innovative, in-your-face—no doubt. But they're also turntablism with spoken decoration, of small use to anyone who hasn't internalized the 'real' hip hop aesthetic." In the newspaper's annual Pazz & Jop critics poll, it was named the 27th best album of 1987.

[DISCUSSION] LL Cool J - Bigger and Deffer (One Year Later)

Posted:

Bigger and Deffer (abbreviated as BAD on the album cover) is the second studio album by American rapper LL Cool J, released on May 29, 1987 by Def Jam Recordings and Columbia Records. It features the first commercially successful "rap ballad", "I Need Love". It also contains the single "Go Cut Creator Go", which paid homage to his DJ, and the breakthrough single in the UK, "I'm Bad". With over two million copies sold in the United States alone, it stands as one of LL Cool J's biggest career albums.

Background

The cover photo was taken in front of Andrew Jackson High School in Queens (which LL Cool J attended before dropping out in the 10th or 11th grade), and the back cover was shot in his grandmother's basement (his residence at the time). Both images were shot by Glen E. Friedman. LL Cool J wants to let everyone know he's bad

Wow! I'm Bad is going to be a great song for the summer. This is gonna bump on the tape deck.

I really liked Radio two years ago, so I'm excited to see what he can do with this. I doubt he can top Rock the Bells.

I Need Love is smooth as hell.

had to pick this up after my classes today. this is gonna be radical.

LL Cool J beat the sophomore slump!

[FRESH] BROCKHAMPTON - COUNT ON ME

Crazy youtube video I just found with only 181 views showing that Naughty by Nature probably really did steal the beat for "O.P.P.".

Posted:

I went on a bit of a Wikipedia hip hop binge last night and came across a rapper/producer named Tony D that died a couple years ago. He was apparently a pretty big deal in the late 80s New Jersey hip hop scene, and claimed for years that Naughty by Nature jacked the "O.P.P." beat from him. The group pretty much disparaged the dude in rare interviews where they were asked about it, but Tony pretty much stuck with his story to the grave. That they heard his instrumental album from 1988, and jacked it for use on O.P.P.

It took me a long time to dig it up but I found it. The song is called "Adam's Nightmare" and can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo5_K6EGtPQ

The beat starts at 24:44.

Now I'd be the first to admit there's a lot of artists who use the same samples as others (remember the Onyx and AZ controversy with the "Welcome Back Kotter" sample?) but I gotta say, this is pretty damning. It's...the same exact beat, with the same exact samples used in the same exact unique ways (especially the lyrical vocal samples).

The fact that Tony D was from the same area as NbN and his instrumental album came out a good 3 years before OPP, and it makes it incredibly likely to me that they heard this beat and straight up jacked the dude's production for their own.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks. I think Naughty are an extremely talented group and I'm not trying to shit on their legacy, but I do feel bad that this dude essentially got fucked out of any recognition for what a great beatmaker he was. I also didn't like the way Vin and KayGee came off in an interview when asked about it. They were genuinely assholes about it, while Tony D was always really diplomatic about the whole thing.

Thoughts after hearing the beat I linked?

Does the Beastie Boys prove that white people can rap?

Posted:

The Beastie Boys released Licensed to Ill a few years ago in '86 and it has created an immediate impact in the rap community. By taking the classic soulful style of hip-hop and creating a more rock style allows for rock fans to find the appeal in hip-hop music. Their debut album went up to #1 in the Billboard 200 and included hits like No Sleep till Brooklyn, Girls, Fight for Your Right, Paul Revere, and Brass Monkey. They also got support from Rick Rubin who's worked with LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Geto Boys, and Run-DMC. He is also a leading force in popularizing hip-hop music and creating a more mainstream community around hip-hop. Only time will tell when they release more projects with their sophomore album. I'm excited to see what they can do!

Do you think that people like the Beastie Boys can prove that hip-hop can made by anyone? Do you think rap rock is a viable part of the genre too?
