[DISCUSSION] Drake - Views (5 Years Later)

Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:01 PM PDT

Drake dropped his highly anticipated 4th studio album called "Views" on April 29th 2016. He teased the album was coming on Twitter & at the time the name of the album was "Views from the 6" but he changed for whatever reason. Views takes influence from West Indian and West African music. The album marks Drake's first full foray into Jamaican dancehall music, while also featuring other genres such as R&B, trap, Afrobeat, UK funky, and pop. Similar to his previous records, the album sees Drake discussing his relationship woes, experiences with betrayal, and celebrations of loyalty and friendship.

Success wise, The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, with over one million album-equivalent units earned in its first week of release, including 852,000 copies, and achieving a then record over 245 million streams. It spent a total 13 non-consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, and also became Drake's first number-one album on the UK Albums Chart. All 20 songs from the album charted on the US Billboard Hot 100.

In my opinion this album took a very long time for me to actually appreciate it. I didn't love it from the jump because it was very different from previous albums such as Thank Me Later, Take Care & Nothing Was The Same. Looking back on it I think just wanted more rapping from him & I didn't get that which I'm fine with now but at the time I just wasn't with the whole Caribbean & RnB sounds throughout the whole album. Throughout the years every-time I came back to re listen to this album, I tend to skip through 75% of it. But it wasn't until last year where this project clicked for me, still isn't my favourite from him but I can appreciate the work he put into it & it truly doesn't deserve the hate it gets when it's mention. What are your thoughts on the album ?

Tracklist:

  1. "Keep The Family Close"

  2. "9"

  3. "U With Me?"

  4. "Feel No Ways"

  5. "Hype"

  6. "Weston Road Flows"

  7. "Redemption"

  8. "With You"

  9. "Faithful"

  10. "Still Here"

  11. "Controlla"

  12. "One Dance"

  13. "Grammys"

  14. "Childs Play"

  15. "Pop Style"

  16. "Too Good"

  17. "Summers Over Interlude"

  18. "Fire & Desire"

  19. "Views"

  20. "Hotline Bling (Bonus)"
