[DISCUSSION] Thundercat - It Is What It Is (One Year Later)

Posted: 27 Apr 2021 09:11 AM PDT

It Is What It Is is the fourth studio album by American musician Thundercat, released through Brainfeeder on April 3, 2020. It was preceded by five singles: "King of the Hill," which was released as a single from the label's compilation album Brainfeeder X in 2018, and "Black Qualls," "Dragonball Durag," "Fair Chance," and "Innerstellar Love," the latter four being released in 2020. The track "Unrequited Love" had previously been used in an episode of the anime Carole & Tuesday in 2019. The album was executive produced by Thundercat and Flying Lotus, and features guest appearances from Louis Cole, Steve Lacy, Steve Arrington, Childish Gambino, Ty Dolla Sign, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, BadBadNotGood, and Zack Fox.

It Is What It Is received critical acclaim, with critics praising Thundercat's typical sense of humor in his lyrics and bass playing, as well as Thundercat's way of expressing emotions, particularly his grief over the loss of long-time close friend and collaborator Mac Miller, which feeds into many of the musical and lyrical elements of the album. The title track of the album contains a vocal sample from the late Miller; Thundercat also dedicated the album in his memory.

The album won Best Progressive R&B Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, beating out fellow nominees Jhené Aiko, Chloe x Halle, Free Nationals, and Robert Glasper.

I love Louis cole

here are my thoughts on this album since I've already listened to it:

First things first, a majority of the album transitions track into track which is always something nice to see on album especially on something as jam-filled as this. A lot of these songs are very short for the most part, but it's typical for Thundercat to crank out short tracks to go between larger songs, and they don't overstay their welcome. The Childish Gambino addition to Black Qualls definitely improves on the already fantastic song. It's probably my favorite of the album. 'I Love Louis Cole' is fantastic. The song is a duet about the two of them confessing their love to each other and enjoying to party together. Louis Cole's drumming on the track is solid.

Sadly, the Zack Fox feature is just a skit and not him spitting a funny verse like Square Up, Jesus is the One, or The Bean Kicked In. It's similar to JID's Workin Out skit with, but it's not a really funny skit filled with jokes, it's just there to build into Dragonball Durag with Zack Fox mentioning that Thundercat is wearing a durag.

Ty Dolla $ign works extremely well on with Thundercat/Flying Lotus production on Fair Chance. Lil B's verse is a good laidback verse that fits with the vibe of the song really well.

The short songs throughout the album are very solid as well especially how most of them just build on each other and create a fun and groovy atmosphere, and Thundercat's vocals on this are quite nice to listen to. This album feels more of an album to just vibe and chill to compared to Drunk that felt more high paced at some moments, and drunk had higher highs to me, but overall this album is a very good contribution to Thundercat's catalog and it contains quite a few nice songs that will be great for a summer night looking into the stars with someone you love.

Clocking in at only 38 minutes, the project is less ambitious than Drunk, but it still is an enjoyable and entertaining album which is what Thundercat is all about.

The last song on the album is giving me goosebumps with that transition of Thundercat saying "Hey Mac" and hearing the distinct "Woah".

Grateful Russia gets some love on Overseas!

Beautiful album and everything works so well together.

Discovered Thundercat a few weeks ago and I'm so mad I didn't know about him sooner.

Just in time for the album tho 😁

Edit: thanks for the recommendations. Ever since I heard Redbone I was like "why dont we get more music like this". Finding thundercat has been like finding buried treasure. I'm so happy.

i'm off the shits listening for the first time right now and it's groovy nothing outstanding but good mood music and good atmosphere

Its good music when you're lost in the sauce

I ate some mushrooms last night and remembered that it had come out when I was coming down, and listening to 'Intergalactic Lovers' while floating on my couch watching the rainbows spiral on the back of my eyelids was a pretty magical experience. It is an album with a good amount of groove, funny but also wistful. I think it's a more grown-up album than Drunk. As always the technical proficiency is super impressive, Thundercat is a super talented composer. It also made me miss Mac Miller but then a lot of things do. I feel like his memory was in the background of this album while it was being created.

The second half of that last song is so amazing. I don't know how Thundercat discovered his sound, but it is completely unique.

It's a great, cohesive album that I enjoyed more than Drunk. The "Mac" on the final track was very gutwrenching but yet really heartwarming, and I really do see myself coming back to this album. 10/10

i liked it more than Drunk , and i feel like i can weigh this with less bias because i just listened to Drunk a few weeks back after i wanted to get into Thundercat's discography . i had it on repeat for a few weeks , but it was not as front to back playable as this off of tha rip . maybe Drunk has some higher highs but the closer on this album gets me to tear up pretty often and that never happens so i'd call it about even , plus some of my other favorites like Dragonball Durag , Overseas , and Innerstellar Love top my favorites from Drunk .

It Is What It Is is real ghastly so i dont know how i feel about putting that track on repeat because i love it so much . i think this project isnt as funny as Drunk , mainly because he's dealing with some real shit throughout . can tell throughout the tone of the album is definitely more serious to me , but it does have its ups and downs concerning tone . i love this record , easy AOTY 4 me at this point in tha year .

Damn good album. I wish I could say it was better than Drunk but that album had no skips whereas this one could have done without Miguel's Happy Dance personally. Notable tracks for me are Innerstellar Love, Funny Thing, and It Is What It Is. FlyLo played the beat to Innerstellar Love at a few concerts last year and I was hoping he'd release it; really glad he did.

What I love most is the final track It Is What It Is. It's a tribute to Mac Miller in the same style as A Message For Austin - a song he created after the death of his friend Austin Peralta. A two part track with Thundercat vocals at the forefront and a beautiful instrumental to close it out. Incredible track and album.
