As a woman who loves this sub and hip hop music, I really want to add my two-cents about the A$AP Bari situation.

Posted: 19 Jul 2017 11:55 AM PDT

I'm a huge lurker and I usually enjoy just reading others' opinions, but I know the demographics of this sub and most of you are teen/young adult men. So I'm here to offer a woman's perspective on the Bari video. Reading some of the responses to threads about Bari and the video made me sick to my stomach. People are using the word rape and rapist, pinning such an allegation on him without knowing the facts--I agree this isn't right. But really y'all? You are going to get hung up on that and not focus on the fact that a naked crying woman was begging Bari to stop and leave her alone...but it wasn't rape...and that's the point, right? NO. How many more women need to go through this before we stand up and say "hey! This person was severely abused and the hip hop community doesn't stand for it."

My next point is everyone was applauding Playboi Carti for basically saying I don't condone his actions, but that's my boy. I don't know about you, but if I saw a video of my friend treating a woman like that, that person isn't my friend. If you're okay with supporting someone with that kind of character (or lack thereof) I don't fuck with you. Simple.

The hip hop community is so lax about the way women are treated that Chris Brown got away with beating the shit out of Rihanna, and was allowed to put out new music and features after that and was embraced with open arms.

I'm pretty confident Bari will be just fine too. I just wish this sub and lovers of the music would acknowledge that hip hop doesn't love its women, and it's a big problem we all need to wake up to.

And I'm not forgetting about the women that objectify themselves and allow it to happen, but in some circumstances, being naked in a music video is a way to survive just the way selling crack rocks on the street is for these dudes out here. Something to think about.

Readying myself for the backlash.

EDIT: okay so I consistently roll my eyes at cheesy edits but holy shit. Wasn't expecting such constructive and insightful comments. Very grateful for the chance to open up a dialogue about misogyny/violence towards women in hip hop. I hope the dialogue only continues and allows for change on some level. Keep the comments coming, love reading everyone different perspectives on this.

EDIT 2: I used Chris Brown as an obvious and well known example. I'm not giving Kodak, xxxtentacion, Dr. Dre, or any other artist a free pass. They're all wrong for what they did and it should be known. Let's go big picture here lol just used Chris as an example. I removed Freddy Gibbs as he was found innocent on all charges.

EDIT 3: I just want to leave this post by saying my broader point was about violence against women and misogyny in the industry and society at large. Bari was just the most relevant example of both those things which is why he was the subject of this post. Sexism is a systemic issue that is broader than hip hop--it spans society as a whole. Just start asking yourself: why do we accept behavior that outright disrespects, belittles, and devalues women? How can we--men and women--do better as a whole? Have a little empathy and see things from another persons eyes, you can learn and grow a lot. Thanks r/hhh for letting me use this platform to generate an honest discussion.

Went to a Vic Mensa listening party for The Autobiography last Monday

Posted: 19 Jul 2017 01:57 PM PDT

Invite. Signed lyric booklet.

It was sick, even liked it more than some concerts I've been to. It was held last Monday at The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles - definitely recommend visiting this place, anytime you're in LA.

Small group, maybe 50 people. It was supposedly invite-only, but they didn't check mine. The format itself was like a silent listening party, where everyone had their own wireless headphones (which was a great format for the album, which I can go into later).

Vic was spinning while people filed in. He was right in the middle of the floor, with people crowding around on the couches or heading to the open bar in back. Didn't know a ton on his music taste, but he played some Queen and MIA, and something from Kendrick too.

Then he started his album. He spoke a briefly on the album and the process, and he introduced most songs. He encouraged everyone to walk around while listening to the album, which the headphones really helped with - you could set your own volume and walk around without missing anything. Vic even went around a bit browsing the books, he didn't want people to just crowd him the whole time, and was just a totally different vibe than most types of shows I've been to.

Back to the headphones - they helped with some of the tracks. The first track (and I think the last track) off the album had binaural audio - like '3d' sound that put you in a different place. Just little scenes that put you in Vic's childhood, worked really well. It wasn't used just as a gimmick either, and the little acoustic vignettes were also tied into the songs well.

In terms of the songs themselves, really liked them. Least favorite was actually "Wings" (the one that's already out as a single), but I'm not a music critic so I can't really speak well on all the songs. The whole album is really just about Vic's life (the title of the album), and it wasn't like hardcore gangster shit, but relatable, everyday shit. Of course there's also stuff about how he's a young millionaire rapper now, and it's not like he grew up like a white kid in the suburbs going to a private school, but it felt real. First and last songs were great, but favorite song might have been "Heaven on Earth" - had almost Crystal Castles vibe with the sample. Liked "Rollin' Like a Stoner" too (Kid Cudi vibes).

Wasn't even a massive Vic Mensa fan before, but it was really sick. Sick venue, sick event, and sick album - so definitely check out The Last Bookstore, go to a silent listening party, and listen Vic's new album when it drops, even if it's not all three at once.

ALSO - this is a stretch, but if you were there, and you're a short, cute, brown-haired girl with a black (leather?) jacket that was by herself, and smiled at a guy with glasses near the info desk, DM me.

Top 10 Fastest Tech N9ne verses according to music theory

Posted: 19 Jul 2017 06:46 PM PDT

I found the top speed tech n9ne ever reached using music theory.

Basically, every song has a tempo, let's say 100BPM, which stands for beats per minute.

Every flow has a rhythm, and that rhythm is just a subdivision of the beat. So say if someone is doing the triplet flow, it divides the beat into 3 syllables, i.e. 3 syllables per beat.

If someone does 3 syllables per beat and there are 100 beats per minute, that means you have 3 * 100 = 300 syllables per minute. To get syllables per second (the common measure for rap speed), you just divide 300 by 60 seconds--> 300/60 = 5 SPS.

Therefore, someone doing triplets at 100BPM is spitting at 5 syllables per second. You can apply this formula to literally any song and find out how fast they are going. I've seen too many people manually count and stuff and thought I'd put this to rest once and for all.

Here you have it, the top 10 fastest tech n9ne verses:
