Recommended If You Like Thread - July 01, 2017 Posted: 01 Jul 2017 11:05 AM PDT If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want. Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z You can also recommend an artist/project/scene Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats. Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question. Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music. [CANADA DAY] I did a few write ups on some Canadian hip hop artists that everyone should check out. Posted: 01 Jul 2017 08:39 AM PDT Happy Canada Day, Hip Hop Heads! I've compiled a list of Canadian Hip Hop Artists, along with some info, who I think should be known by everyone. I'm gonna try to cover artists of all different styles, popularities, etc. Enjoy! NIGHT LOVELL City: Ottawa, Ontario Night Lovell is one of the fastest growing artists coming out of Canada, with a massive underground fan-base, particularly in Ottawa and Europe. Lovell began making music as a producer under the alias klnv, but only became a rap artist himself when he uploaded Dark Light to his SoundCloud in 2014, a self-produced track that gained significant attention from the underground hip hop scene. Before 2014 was over, his debut mixtape Concept Vague had been released and Lovell began to get his foot in the hip hop scene. Concept Vague was a partially self-produced project with dark, ominous instrumentals and deep, confident vocals from Lovell. This project was followed up by Red Teenage Melody in 2016, where Lovell moved away from production and began focusing more on his vocals. This project saw Lovell target a wider appeal and strive for party-banger oriented music rather than the dark, gloomy music he made in his previous project. Night Lovell is an easy pick for me for this list as he's from my hometown and is nearly my age, not to mention his energetic stage presence and fan interaction. BEST SONGS CMDWN City: Toronto, Ontario Another favorite of mine, CMDWN, the duo that comprises of rapper Ca$tro Guapo and singer Fiji. CMDWN has a small but hardcore fanbase, and rightfully so as they are arguably the most talented hip hop artists on the come up right now. CMDWN brings trapping from Atlanta to Canada in what could best be described as gangster Rae Sremmurd. From the hard, aggressive bars from Ca$tro to the softer, melodic hooks sung by Fiji, CMDWN makes for one of the most interesting and must see hip hop groups in the entire game right now. From their breakout single What's Her Name to their most recent mixtape Castro vs. Fiji, CMDWN should definitely be kept on your radar for up and coming rap artists. BEST SONGS KAYTRANADA City: Montreal, Quebec I'm sure a lot of you are already familiar with producer Kaytranada, as he has collaborated with the likes of Vic Mensa, GoldLink, Anderson .Paak, and Snoop Dogg, among others. The Montreal producer is known for his groovy, synthy and distinctive beats that can be identified as soon as a song starts playing. Kaytranada broke into the mainstream with his debut album 99.9% and won the Juno (Canadian Grammy) for best electronic album. Not the most underground artist but definitely a name worth mentioning. BEST SONGS TOBi City: Brampton, Ontario TOBi is one of the most talented up and coming musicians from the Great White North with a satisfying and refreshing twist to the booming GTA R&B scene, adding soulful and funky vibes to his soothing voice. Don't be fooled though, as he does have an ability to spit too, incorporating melody and flow as important parts of his sound. TOBi sticks to one producer, Nate Smith, which gives him a consistent and cohesive sound that will have you utterly impressed as to how-the-fuck this guy hasn't blown up as you coast through his music. His debut EP FYi was one of the most overlooked projects of 2016 as talented Canadian artists still struggle to reach recognition south of the border. BEST SONGS SHAQISDOPE City: Toronto, Ontario ShaqIsDope has definitely received some recognition within the hip hop community but certainly not enough. Shaq came through with his debut EP last year Black Frames, a chill yet lyrical project from the New York-inspired artist. The project stays true to Toronto's dark and ominous instrumentals while he adds newfound lyricism that isn't too prominent in the rap scene of the 6. Shaq also managed to collaborate with the actual Shaquille O'Neal on a remix of Future's Karate Chop. Shaq has yet to drop a disappointing song and is representing the Great White North proudly with his music. BEST SONGS ALLAN KINGDOM City: Winnipeg, Manitoba While he may not be living in Canada anymore, I'm going to include Allan Kingdom anyways because he's a Canadian and I really enjoy his music. Based out of St. Paul, Minnesota (a.k.a. South Canada), Allan Kingdom already has many projects to his name, including 2017's LINES. Allan Kingdom adds positive vibes to a sing-rap over some impressive instrumentals, having collaborated with artists such as Denzel Curry, D.R.A.M., and even Kanye West. Kingdom makes music for the chill ear, for someone who's looking for a satisfying voice tied to slower, melodic beats and easy going lyrical topics, which Kingdom nails perfectly. Definitely an artist worth listening to. BEST SONGS DANIEL CAESAR City: Toronto, Ontario Modern-day R&B has come to be known as dark, melodic beats with sex-infused lyrics. Daniel Caesar breaks these boundaries and is in a league of his own in the Toronto hip hop scene, boasting one of the most amazing and soothing voices in all of music right now with soulful instrumentals delicately tied with his unbelievably gifted voice. Daniel Caesar kicked off his music career with his debut project Praise Break in 2014 and has been on the rise to stardom since, with hit songs such as Get You with Kali Uchis. The 22 year old singer has a promising music career in front of him as he continues to grow in popularity as what I would describe as a "sophisticated Khalid." BEST SONGS This is the extent of my knowledge on lesser known Canadian hip hop! If you've got some artists that you think I should know, please feel free to comment below and I will check them out.
