2Pac's best friend Stretch had an interesting life. He was the first artist to get a 360 contract before he was murdered after recording 'Take it in Blood' with Nas at his crib. He had robbed a drug dealer for 10 ki's of coke & refused to return it. Stretch was not in the 2Pac movie.

*The FBI believes his killer is the same guy who popped Jam Master Jay. *

Stretch's story alone is incredible, dude was a solid rapper too. Listen to some of his classics & read the article on our page here.

He and 2Pac had a falling out because he was a known affiliate of Haitian Jack & co aswell, but it's a shame because he had nothing to do with 2Pac's disciplining by Henchman. Classic case of shooting the messenger. 2Pac didn't attend his funeral & he was then shot up exactly 1 year after.

Ed Lover also has some wild stories about when they used to all rock together - 2Pac, Stretch, Ed Lover, E Money Bags. Fascinating dudes in their own right. All up just a really cool story about the golden age of hip-hop.

A Guide to Apollo Brown

Posted: 21 Jul 2017 04:45 PM PDT

In anticipation of Apollo Brown's new record Anchovies w/ Planet Asia coming out August 25th - I decided I'd come out with a guide for Apollo Brown so you could be ready for the new record. Here's the first single, Dalai Lama Slang.

Biography

Erik Stephens, otherwise known as Apollo Brown by the music industry, was born June 20th, 1980 in Grand Rapids Michigan. He's known as a Detroit producer, and one of the best to come from the underground.

Apollo Brown has been a huge player in the Detroit Underground HipHop scene since the late 2000's. Apollo Brown released his first project in 2007, titled Skilled Trade. He released his second project in 2009, titled Make Do. This project received a significant amount of buzz, leading him to compete in the Detroit Red Bull Tune Championships where he won the entire competition. He was then signed to the label Mello Music Group, who he has been a part of ever since.

Here's a timeline (with rough thoughts) of his entire discography

What Makes Apollo Brown so unique?

Apollo Brown is in my opinion one of hip-hop's most dynamic producers. Sometimes labeled a "knock-off Premo", he takes elements from blues, motown, gospel and soul and brings it all together for his take on classic east-coast boombap and gritty detroit instrumentals. He has found a lane and absolutely perfected it.

What really sets him apart is his ability to create full collaborative projects with a single artist instead of selling beats to rappers and having his name on a variety of records. While he does give away beats to people (most noteably Chance The Rapper's Windows) he spends most of his time focusing on his own work & with his label Mello Music Group. MMG gives him the ability and resources to create projects he wants to, not limiting or forcing him to work artists he would otherwise stay away from. This gives Brown a unique lane in the industry, allowing him to have come out with some of the best projects in the underground from the past decade. Apollo's strength is creating beats that suit the artist he is working with to sound nearly flawless over the course of the record, and really bring their vocals to the forefront. He makes cohesive projects that directly compliment any artist he works with. He brings the best out of all the artists he works with, and helps create the best work in their discography time and time again. He has been one of the most consistent producers in the game for the past 10 years now. He makes any artist sound great on his instrumentals, but does so over the course of an entire record, not just a single song. Not many producers have this ability. The list is quite small, and full of some of the greats such as Madlib, Premo, Pharrell, Q-Tip, RZA, No-ID, etc. A list I think Apollo Brown deserves a mentioning on.

3 Essential Collaborative Projects by Apollo Brown

please note there were two other projects I wanted to include here but I tried to keep it as short and sweet as possible so I narrowed it down. I'll mention them all later don't worry. Don't get your knickers in a knot either. Or do, that's fine too.

The Easy Truth is Apollo Brown's latest release - assuming this guide comes out before his LP with Planet Asia in August. This is personally my favourite Apollo project. It's flawless in many regards. The beats are some of the best boom-bap, soul-chopped beats that I've heard from the past half-decade yet alone past year. It's important to note some of these beats were previously released on some of his instrumental projects, and Skyzoo simply took them after they were touched up and rapped over them. Skyzoo is one of the best currently in the underground scene I'd say. His flow and delivery is consistently great, and his lyrics are perfect as well. He tells stories about his life, touches on current issues and brings it all together without sounding preachy or condescending. The features here are incredible as well. There aren't many, but Conway, Westside, Joell Ortiz, Stalley & Patty Crash are all killer on here. The samples here are fucking smooth. This shit is slick as fuck and incorporates 90's boom-bap with current sounds perfectly. Love this fucking record.

Favourite Songs: Basquiat On The Draw, Innocent Ambition, Visionary Riches

Perhaps the biggest name that Apollo has worked with outside of Ghostface Killah, Ras Kass is a true legend in the rap game. He has a definite classic under his belt with Soul On Ice and he raps the same kind of way on this record. His lyricism is off the charts on a lot of tracks, and between the samples from Apollo & Ras' lyrics the theme of religion is super prevalent on this record. Don't worry Coloring Book haters, it's not "preachy" or over-the-top. It's a reflective record that talks a lot of Ras' career and all that he's accomplished and done in his life. It's just a theme that helps guide the album and give it a concept for Ras to touch on among other things. The instrumentation on this album is absolutely perfect. There's a huge amount of variety - keeping the production from ever getting stale or worn out. The samples are creative and give life to all of the beats. There's some really interesting scratches on this record as well, that compliment some of the hooks most noteably. Some big name features on this project, including: Pharoahe Monch, Royce 5'9 & Xzibit.

Favourite Songs: 48 Laws Pt. 1, Bon Voyage, Animal Sacrifice

This is a collaborative project with his group titled The Left. The Left is made up of Apollo Brown, Journalist 103 & DJ Soko. Soko's only involvement is the cuts & scratches if I'm not mistaken. To me, this album truly sounds like Detroit. I've been to Detroit twice in my life so I could be wrong, but both times this seemed like the perfect soundtrack to a city such as Detroit. There's a lot of grit and rust feeling that haunts this album really. Journalist103 is an MC I have never heard of before this project, but man was I ever blown away. His worldplay and lyrics are out of this world. He really made this album for me when I was expecting most of the heavy lifting to come from Apollo Brown. The features on here are spread out very well, it keeps the album from getting boring or stale.

Favourite Songs: Get In Where You Fit In (Closer), The Melody, Real Detroit

3 Essential Instrumental Projects by Apollo Brown

What is there to say about this project that hasn't been said already? One of the greatest instrumental albums out there in my opinion, it's worth listening front to back to really grasp the strength of Apollo Brown as a producer. One of the fastest hours to go by is when I listen to this project, and I think it's important if you haven't already to give this a full listen. I know for a fact I've heard Balance, Push & Shadows of Grief elsewhere with vocals layered ontop but I can't place them at the time of writing this. If this isn't considered a classic by now, I'd say it's a great project at the very least. It's Apollo's most popular work and I'm glad people know Apollo for this album

Favourite Songs: Do yourself a favour and listen to the whole thing, please.

Apollo's first project that's he ever come out with. It's definitely a top tier instrumental project. It's full of bluesy, soulful instrumentals. It runs 30 tracks long but less than an hour. I think this is a strength of the project, as you're never getting stuck or bored on a loop of an instrumental. Apollo is really ballsy here, choosing to sample Nas, Biggie & Queen among others. The one drawback I find is that a lot of the percussion patterns he loops in a lot of his songs start to sound the same. It doesn't take away from the project too much due to how well the instrumentals are layered otherwise.

Favourite Songs: My Steelo, The Turning Key, Substance

Dope album front to back. Really feels like a movie soundtrack – which is what the cover art is going for and seems to insinuate. I get a lot of western vibes from it for whatever reason. The samples are pretty ranged, you get a bunch of classic soul samples chopped up, a couple blues as well. It's pretty gritty I'd said as well, the scratches and static effect in the background of the songs makes it feel older yet modern.

Favourite Songs: Strange Things, The Warning, Black Suits

Final Author's Notes

By this point if you're still reading - there's a chance you're upset I did not include The Dice Game or Trophies in my section of Essential Collab Albums. While I think they're both great projects, they aren't as unique or essential to get a feel for the different styles that Apollo is able to execute. If you were to argue Dice Game or Trophies > Gas Mask or Blasphemy I wouldn't be opposed to hearing out your argument. They're both great projects - just not as good as the three I mentioned - in my opinion.

Complete Discography Notes / Review- basically my rough notes for each of Apollo's projects. If you're interesting in diving into any of his other work not mentioned, please refer here for where to go next.

  • In a separate comment in this thread, I will be including links to each of his projects on Bandcamp, Spotify & Apple if I can find them all. If they're missing but you can find the link, feel free to share with me.
