I Used to Love H.E.R.

Book of Life

Background/Description (courtesy of allmusic.com)

Although Chicago is often praised for its blues, jazz, and house music, the city has failed to be successful when it comes to rap. One of the few Chicago MCs who has enjoyed any type of national attention is Common Sense, whose complex style of rapping and jazz-flavored tracks inspire comparisons to De La Soul, Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Pharcyde. On his sophomore effort, Resurrection, the South Sider doesn't hesitate to let you know that he has considerable technique, and in fact, he sometimes displays too much of it for his own good. Nonetheless, his intelligence, wit, and originality make this CD impressive. Resurrection's standout track is "I Used to Love H.E.R.," which seems to describe a lover's moral and spiritual decline, but is actually addressing what Common views as hip-hop's decline (in particular, gangsta rap's exploitation of sex and violence). Also quite noteworthy are "Nuthin' to Do" (which speaks out on the deterioration of Chicago's neighborhoods), and the introspective "Book of Life," a commentary on trying to keep it together in a society that has lost all traces of sanity.

Guidelines

This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!!

How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't.

DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE !!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged.

CHILDISH GAMBINO'S AWAKEN MY LOVE MIGHT SOUND BETTER SPED UP?!

Posted: 23 Apr 2017 09:14 PM PDT

So, I was on YouTube and I had sped up a previous video (you know when they slow down a song as to not be removed by YouTube so you gotta counterbalance it) and, anyway, I forgot I had it on when I got into an "Awaken My Love" mood.

I started "Zombies" and was blown away by how the intro sounded. It sounded like a retro disco/r&b/pop single. I loved the way the guitar wailed and shred so i let it play and couldn't believe the singing still held up pretty well. The whole song did as a matter of fact. I got real Michael Jackson (Beat It/Billie Jean) vibe. Mind you, the video was playing 1.50 faster. Almost twice as fast. So I decided to let RIOT play next, but that didn't work (To Super Mario-y) but when I slowed it down to 1.25 it sounded like an amazing James Brown homage. I was pretty amazed so I continued to play the rest of the album sped up a bit and found almost every song became these dance-able/groovy/Slow Jam/pop-like songs. They perfectly were able to change up.

Almost too perfectly. It almost makes me think CHILDISH GAMBINO might have originally recorded it this way then slowed it down and released it that way. Creating one album that was slow, soulful and funky while the other was a SECRET album where if you sped it up, you got a poppy, still funky, R&B album. I know record players play at 33RPM and, the faster, 45 RPM. Maybe the VINYLS at 45 RPM produce the same effect as the sped up version on YouTube. If anyone does have the album on Vinyl and wants to test it out, please let me know.

Anyway, if anyone else wants to test this out on YouTube, here's the album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hZCsgcKa-g&list=PLYuz75ZV-NPDBQkU3Gn4QVGc44iNjbyXj&index=2

I've included what speeds to play them on below. (Mostly 1.25) Let me know what you guys think.

ME AND YOUR MAMA - 1.25

HAVE SOME LOVE - 1.25

BOOGIEMAN - 1.25

ZOMBIES - 1.50 (A Michael Jackson-esque Tune) or 1.25

RIOT - 1.25 (James Brown-Esque)

REDBONE - 1.25 or 1.50 (I don't mind 1.50 but vocals worsen)

CALIFORNIA - 1.25

TERRIFIED - 1.25 or 1.50 (VOCALS BECOME A BIT WARBLY AT THE CHORUS, BUT THE BEAT IS MUCH FUNKIER)

BABY BOY - 1.25

THE NIGHT ME AND YOUR MAMA MET - 1.50 (Chorus Vocals are a bit Warbly) or 1.25

STAND TALL - 1.25
