r/hiphopheads Essential Album of the Week #90: Brotha Lynch Hung - Season of da Siccness Posted: 26 Apr 2017 04:27 AM PDT Welcome to the new and improved Essential Album of the Week discussion thread! Every Wednesday we will discuss an album from our Essential Albums list Last Week: Common-Ressurection This Week: Brotha Lynch Hung - Season of da Siccness Stream/Purchase Not available on Spotify Not available on iTunes Songs/Singles Background/Description (courtesy of allmusic.com) After the Geto Boys, it seemed that rap couldn't get any more extreme or hardcore. But in 1994, Season of da Siccness proved that in fact it could. Thriving on shock value and outrageousness, Brotha Lynch Hung is to rap what grindcore bands like Cannibal Corpse and Carcass are to metal. On this very twisted CD, the obscure and underground Sacramento MC calls himself "the Ripgut Cannibal" and portrays a psycho who's part Jeffrey Dahmer, part Hannibal Lecter, and part ghetto gang-banger. Lynch's accounts of cannibalism and dismemberment must be taken for exactly what they are: outrageous entertainment, pure and simple. Obviously, Siccness isn't for everyone. But those interested in the hip-hop equivalent of a slasher movie may find Lynch (whose rapid-fire delivery brings to mind Spice 1) quite entertaining. Guidelines This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!! How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't. DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE !!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged. Next week's EAOTW will be Tupac - Me Against the World [Post scheduled by Later for Reddit] [link] [comments] |
Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #233 - Canibus - Rip The Jacker Posted: 26 Apr 2017 03:49 PM PDT Welcome to HHH Listening Club! This week we'll be listening to Rip The Jacker by Canibus. Background Canibus is infamous for all the wrong reasons, but that wasn't always the case. Before a string of beefs and several albums many would describe as falling somewhere between lackluster & average (if not just flat-out confusing,) he was highly regarded and expected to be one of the next great emcees after holding his own among a number of hip-hop heavyweights. In 1997, Canibus earned a Hip-Hop Quotable in The Source by stealing the show when he collaborated with The Lost Boyz & Redman on "Beasts From The East", a posse cut he closed with a verse twice as long as that of anyone else involved. He shined on "Uni-4-Orm" with Ras Kass & Heltah Skeltah on Rhyme & Reason, the Gold-selling soundtrack to the documentary of the same name, which boasted a track listing that read like a who's who of '90s hip-hop. His debut, white label single, "Niggas We Roll With" (later renamed "How We Roll",) was well-received among underground fans & featured on mixtapes by DJ Evil Dee, Tony Touch & Mister Cee. 'Bis even managed to make his way into rotation on MTV by being featured along with R. Kelly on The Makin' Runs Remix of Wyclef Jean's "Gone Til November". As Canibus was making a name for himself among both mainstream and underground circles, he was enlisted to appear on "4, 3, 2, 1", the second single from Def Jam mainstay LL Cool J's seventh studio album. Canibus was one of two relative newcomers to appear on the various versions of the song that also featured Redman, Method Man & Master P, the other was DMX, a labelmate of LL's whose debut album It's Dark and Hell Is Hot would be released on Ruff Ryders/Def Jam several months later. Canibus & LL would engage in a war of words over lyrics from the song, and we all know how that turned out. Rip The Jacker After releasing his fourth album, Mic Club: The Curriculum in 2002, Canibus announced that he'd enlisted in the United States Army. Before leaving, he turned over vocals he'd recorded for a project called Rip The Jacker to Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind of Jedi Mind Tricks for an album to be released on Babygrade Records, an up-and-coming New York-based independent label founded by Chuck Wilson, a former A&R at Priority Records. Rip The Jacker was among the first albums released by the label, whose roster included underground favorites Jedi Mind Tricks, Mountain Brothers, Jean Grae (who was known as What? What? of Natural Resource prior to signing) and freestyle legend Supernatural. Rip The Jacker received positive reviews, is widely regarded as the best Canibus album, and is considered by many longtime fans as the caliber album they expected from Canibus in 1998 when he made his major label debut, but it tends to be overlooked as today he's become more memorable for his feuds, his odd portrayal as "Stan" and a disasterous rap battle than for his studio albums. Stream/Download Guidelines This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. Keep any top level comments to 140+ characters, unless you have a simple question to ask about the album. WHY do you like this album? What are the best tracks? Did it meet your expectations? Have you listened to this tape before? What is your first impression? Explain why you like it or why you do not like it. Remember people who participate in the discussion in a meaningful way are entered into a draw to select next week's album! [link] [comments] |
