Which cities have thriving/talented hip-hop scenes that don't get enough attention? Posted: 26 May 2021 11:02 AM PDT If you're an avid hip-hop fan, you probably know a thing or two about the rap scenes in cities like Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Houston, Detroit, and L.A., to name some big ones. But which cities out there do we not hear about that have a thriving local scene? For whatever reasons, the city doesn't get looked at for their hip-hop music, but there are numerous talented artists just waiting to blow? The closest "large" city to me is Pittsburgh. Most fans in the 2010s are well acquaintaned with the city's flag bearers, Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller. But since Mac passed away and Wiz has drifted a bit from the mainstream attention he used to garner, no one talks about rap in the Steel City much these days. Unfortunately death has been a big problem for the scene. In addition to Mac's untimely passing, Jimmy Wopo -- the hottest up-and-comer out of the city who had just signed to Taylor Gang -- was murdered a few years ago. Just in the past month, young artist Flatline Nizzy was murdered just over a month after his latest album release. Both artists catalogues have some solid music and will live on in the catalogue of Pittsburgh rap. Despite those tragedies, though, the city still thrives. Hardo is arguably the biggest up and comer in Pitt and made some waves with the single "Murda Boyz" on his last tape, which recently released with DJ Drama and Pooh Shiesty. Fedd The God is also a Pittsburgh artist making noise. Signed to Taylor Gang, his new album features "Yea Yup" an absolute banger collab with Wiz Khalifa. Speaking of Taylor Gang, vet Chevy Woods released an incredibly fresh sounding album to little notice this spring. Guapo Lennon is a newer name on the scene who has major Young Thug/A Boogie influence who could very well be the next star in the Lil Baby-Lil Durk lane. His new EP "Jose" dropped last month. Christo, a producer and DJ for Dreamville's JID, hails from the city, and his brother Benji. has toured with EARTHGANG and recently joined the Spillage Village collective. Benji. had a standout appearance playing bass and rapping on the group's single "Hapi" last year. [link] [comments] |
