If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

R&B Artist Spotlight: Sampha

Music Style: Electronic R&B that is often piano based and incorporates elements of Neo Soul and Art Pop.

Some of you all may recognize UK singer-songwriter Sampha Lahai Sisay from his features on songs such as Too Much and The Motion (Drake's Nothing Was the Same), Saint Pablo (Kanye West's The Life of Pablo), Don't Touch My Hair (Solange's A Seat at the Table), and 4422 (Drake's More Life). He also did some background vocals on Beyonce's Mine. So, Sampha definitely has been around for awhile.

While Sampha's music falls under the Electronic R&B tag, there's something about his music that stands out among other artists under the Electro R&B tag. What stands out about his music is that it is often very piano based. It indicates that if you take away all the electronic elements from his music, Sampha would still have his piano. In fact, take a look at his performances of (No One Knows Me) Like the Piano and Drake's Controlla at BBC Radio 1. Those performances show that Sampha is a piano man at heart.

Even though a lot of his songs are piano based, they often contain other elements. Songs like Timmy's Prayer contains bagpipes, Kora Sings and What Shouldn't I Be have harps, Reverse Faults and Incomplete Kisses have electronic glitches, and some of his features such as Valentine (with Jessie Ware), Something Goes Right (with SBTRKT), Sanctuary (with SBTRKT and Jessie Ware), and Living Like I Do (with SBTRKT) are more dance-oriented and electronic based. Sampha's music even contains tribal elements (Without). However if you ask me, the songs where it's just him and a piano (Beneath the Tree, Under, Take Me Inside, (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano, and Blood on Me) will do something to you.

Another thing that makes Sampha stand out is his singing voice. His singing voice is pretty deep which is something that really isn't common in R&B music. So, hearing an R&B singer with a deep singing voice is always something interesting. Also, don't let Sampha's soft voice fool you. He has pipes which can be seen in Can't Get Close and (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano. What Sampha also brings to the table is that he takes a singer-songwriter approach to R&B which is also pretty uncommon. He is also very strong lyrically. His lyrics revolve around relationships and his family ( (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano is about his mother). His songs (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano, Take Me Inside, Plastic 100°C, and Timmy's Prayer showcases his lyrical ability.

Make sure you check out Sampha's projects Dual and Process.

Some of my favorite Sampha songs are Timmy's Prayer, Salient Sarah, Blood on Me, Something Goes Right, Sanctuary, Valentine, Reverse Faults, Living Like I Do, Kota Sings, (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano, Under, Incomplete Kisses, What Shouldn't I Be, Without.

Here are some good performances: Tiny Desk Concert, KEXP, Boiler Room DJ Set

[DISCUSSION] Future - Evol (5 years later)

Posted: 06 Feb 2021 02:49 AM PST

February 6th 2016 Future released his fourth studio album on Epic, Evol.

Debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200, the well-reviewed, gold-selling set was Future's third #1 album in just seven months! Shortly after its release, Future explained that the album's title was the word ''love'' spelled backwards. Just weeks before Evol, future released his Purple Reign mixtape.

Future co-executive proved the album alongside Metro Boomin. The only guest on the album is The Weekend on the multi-platinum single ''Low Life'', which released #18 on the Billboard hot 100.

Points for discussion:

  • Do you still bump this?
  • How do you rank it amongst Future's other projects?
  • Favourite bar, track, beat?
