[DISCUSSION] Denzel Curry/Kenny Beats - UNLOCKED (1 Year Later) Posted: 05 Feb 2021 08:12 PM PST It's been 1 year since the collaborative album from Denzel Curry and Kenny Beats has released. What are your thoughts of the album? I think it's one of my favorite projects from Denzel, it's short and to the point, and filled with bangers. I'd love to hear everyone's opinion on this one. Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:14 AM PST Spotify Music Style: Electronic Alternative R&B that incorporates electronic music from the UK. Kelela Mizanekristos is someone who takes Electronic R&B to a whole new level. She takes R&B and combines it with UK electronics and the final product is amazing. Before we get to that, let's first talk a little bit about Kelela. She's a second generation Ethiopian-American who's always felt a connection to her African heritage. It's very present in her music and image because both incorporate a lot of Afrofuturism. This can be seen her in music videos for LMK and Rewind. At a surface level, Kelela's music could seem as just simply Electro-R&B, but it's way much more than that. Her music invokes a sensual feeling by using a combination of Electronic music and R&B. She can channel atmospheric (Floor Show, Gomenasai, Cherry Coffee), bass heavy (Send Me Out, All The Way Down), and glitchy sounds (Cut 4 Me, Guns & Synths) that will make you notice something new anytime you listen to her music. Kelela also tends to use unconventional sounds in her music. It consists of everything from the sound of a soda can opening (LMK), ice being dropped in an empty glass cup (Keep it Cool), or a glass bottle breaking (Enemy). She also shows that she can work with darker sounds (A Message) while still keeping the same flair. Another notable trait in her music is that she incorporates tempo and sounds changes within her songs like in Better (ambient sound to distorted reverbed electronic sound), Take Me Apart (starts minimalist then turns to repeated sub-basses after a bass drop), and Frontline (minimalist to slight bass sound with 808s). As for lyrics, Kelela's music deals with the various stages of a relationship. From anything to meeting someone new, breaking up with them, or just wanting a simple booty call. While this topic is nothing particularly new for artists, what makes a good writer is not what they write about, it's how they write about it. Kelela's writing is very direct and straight to the point. She's not making you jump through hoops to understand her, she lets you know what she expects from day 1 and makes no apologies for it. One interesting aspect of Kelela's writing is her one-liners. Her one-liners often stand out the most in her lyrics. Lines like "I need someone who knows. Someone who gives a fuck", "Silly s*it we go through. I cop my keys and I'm out", "Probably you've had the same damn thing at the same damn time", and "Afraid of falling knowing that I could never live without" from Enemy, Blue Light, Enough, and Take Me Apart showcase this. One more thing to talk about Kelela is her singing voice. Now her voice may not be as super powerful and fuller compared to other R&B singers, but having a big voice isn't everything. One thing Kelela has is control and the understanding of her voice, both which are some of the most important skills to have as a singer. If you don't believe me, check out this little video here. It's not only that, Kelela has a great range as well. She can even sing whistle notes, like in LMK and Gomenasai. If your interesting in the more UK Electronic music side, check out Cut 4 Me.If you want more sensual Electronic Alternative R&B, listen to Hallucinogen. For sensual Electronic Alternative R&B and incorporating more of that UK electronic sound, listen to Take Me Apart. Some of my favorite Kelela songs are LMK, Enemy, Take Me Apart, Rewind, Better, Truth or Dare, Keep it Cool, Blue Light, A Message, Enough, Cut 4 Me, Floor Show, Turn to Dust, Jupiter, Waitin, and All The Way Down. Here are some good performances: Radio 1's Piano Sessions, Pitchfork Music Festival 2014, UO Live If You use discord, make sure to check out the R&B Discord Server.
