[DISCUSSION] Frank Ocean - nostalgia, ULTRA. (10 Years later)

Posted: 16 Feb 2021 07:21 AM PST

10 years ago today, at the time, Odd Future member Frank Ocean dropped nostalgia, ULTRA. Known for its simplistic cover of an orange BMW E30 M3, a car forever connected with Frank, which wasn't even his at the time. The picture originates from an BMW forum (original forum post), owned by u/dricebrug. The mixtape would turn out to be an instant classic and a masterpiece, that at the time would have an unforeseen impact on its genre. R&B was at a very experimental and interesting time. 2011 contained Take Care by Drake, House of Balloons by The Weeknd and nostalgia, ULTRA. by Frank Ocean. Just to name a few. This was most likely the introduction to Frank Ocean for most people, or Christopher Edwin Breaux as his government name was back then. Before nostalgia, ULTRA. had moved to LA past hurricane Katrina, to pursue his life-long dream of making music, where he later started co-writing songs. Frank Ocean had been co-writing songs for some of the biggest names in the industry. Justin Bieber, John Legend and Brandy, to name a few. Post nostalgia, ULTRA. Frank would get to co-write for Beyonce and work with Jay-Z and Kanye on WTT, resulting in 2 few features. Beyonce said, quote; "Jay had a CD playing in the car one Sunday when we were driving to Brooklyn," That was her first encounter with Ocean's music. "I noticed his tone, his arrangements, and his storytelling,"... "I immediately reached out to him – literally the next morning. I asked him to fly to New York and work on my record". This led to Beyonce's heartbreaking track; 3. I Miss You, which Frank Ocean covered in 2012.

In May 2011 Def Jam announced the mixtape, release date was set on July 26th. Not long after was it delayed and shortly after cancelled. 2 songs off of the project were officially released, 3. Novacane and 10. Swim Good. So, why did nostalgia, ULTRA. never get released officially? Well simple, it samples too many tracks that simply wouldn't be possible to clear for him at the time. Sampling some iconic songs such as; 9. Strawberry Swing by Coldplay, 1. Hotel California by Eagles 7. There Will be Tears by Mr. Hudson, 4. Electric Feel by MGMT to shortly name some of the biggest. Rest of the samples can be found in this video by Bandstand. During an interview, Frank himself said that he was told that MGMT liked his song and that it potentially could've been cleared.

10 years later, this project still stands as strong as it did back then. 3. Novacane and 10. Swim Good are well respected songs off of Frank Ocean's small streaming-discography, whilst nostalgia, ULTRA. has been widely appreciated by critics and fans, who are familiar with his work outside of the streaming services. Scrapping the official release of nostalgia, ULTRA. to work on your commercial debut was a bold move, but it turned out to wonders. In hindsight, the unorthodox release did create a massive buzz for Frank at the time. This project was liked by Kanye West, who later introduced Jay to it, which led to the massive collabs together with Beyonce and on WTT. Frank even declined Kanye working with on Channel Orange, quoute; "I said, 'As much as I want to work with you… I kind of want to do this without you. I kind of want this to be done without you. I kind of want to do it on my own'." , quoted from an 2011 interview.

So 10 years later, where do you see this record standing in his discography?

Do you think it has aged well with time?

Would you want to see Frank Ocean clear the samples in hopes of a streaming release?

[Discussion] Was Nipsey Hussle ahead of his time with Proud2Pay system, where he sold his Crenshaw mixtape for $100 and his Mailbox Money mixtape for $1000?

Posted: 16 Feb 2021 05:49 AM PST

The Proud2Pay system by Nipsey Hussle would be his unique way as an Independent artist to make money and to show love to dedicated fans. People who participated in the Proud2Pay system would get exclusive merch drops, tickets to concerts, signed merch, etc.

In 2013 Nipsey Hussle announced he would sell physical copies of his Crenshaw mixtape for $100 while also releasing it online digitally for free. The immediate reception was filled with people laughing at him, but when the time came for people to actually pay. Los Angelas and Jay-Z came through. He sold out by the end of the week, with Jay-Z personally purchasing 100 copies.

In 2015 Nipsey would up the amount. He would have only 100 physical copies and would be selling them at $1000 a piece. Also releasing the album on streaming for free. He would sell 60 copies first week and eventually sell out.

On Overtime from Mailbox Money Nipsey would have an interlude at the end of the song.

And you know, if you look at like the movie industry

You don't, you don't base the success off for how many tickets sold

You know, like, what's the gross? How much it gross?

Period, right?

When it come to business, the bottom line is, you know, we in business to make money

How much you gross?

So, it's like, I feel like it's a looming question mark over Hollywood, over the entertainment, music industry

What's the new business model?

And, to me, you know, the people that lead to that answer

That lend they intelligence, they hustle, they effort, they mind-power, you know?

Whatever they can offer to that question, and stick to that and come up with answers to that

This reminds me when Danny Brown talked about how he spent 70k to clear samples, but the album didn't sell as well as he was hoping. Making no money off of what was a great project.

Never spend 70k on samples for an album that no ones buys cause you will be in debt lol

Discussion Questions:

  • Is there an artist that you would spend $100 on an album to support
  • Is there an artist that you would spend $1000 on an album to support
  • How far would you go to support your favorite artist signed to a major label?
  • How far would you go to support an Independent artist?
  • What do you think is the best business model for artists going forward?

R&B Artist Spotlight: Nao

Music Style: Soul music that incorporates Alternative R&B, Electronic, Funk, and Neo Soul.

Neo Jessica Joshua or Nao is someone who's quite the outlier in the UK Electronic R&B scene. Her music isn't normally the usual electronic production with R&B vocals like James Blake, Jack Garratt, or SOHN make. So, where does she fit into the scene? Before we answer that question, you all may recognize Nao from her features, Firefly (Mura Masa's Mura Masa) and Superego (Disclosure's Caracal).

What makes Nao an outlier in the UK Electronic Alternative R&B wave is her sound. Instead of the usual subtle, smooth, heavy bass, reverberated sound, Nao takes a more livelier and bouncy approach for her style of Alternative R&B. Nao describes her sound as "wonky funk". Wonky is a style of electronic music, that uses of-beat hip-hop rhythms and combines them with elements of dubstep or IDM. Nao combining funk with Wonky is what gives her music that lively bouncy sound that you won't see with artists like Roses Gabor, Szjerdene, or Fka Twigs. A few of her songs that fit that lively, bouncy sound would be Good Girl, Get to Know Ya, and Trophy. Nao's music also incorporates sounds like funk guitars (So Good, Happy), distorted instruments (Fool to Love, Another Lifetime), tribal beats (If You Ever), industrial music (In the Morning), Afrobeats (Drive and Disconnect, Antidote), and off beat rhythms (Make it Out Alive, Gabriel, Inhale Exhale). Occasionally, Nao's music will follow the usual subtle, smooth, heavy bass style of Alternative R&B as seen in It's You, Apple Cherry, and Blue Wine.

Another thing that makes Nao an outlier is her singing voice. Her voice is one of the most recognizable in R&B music. Her singing voice is very high pitched. It even sounds like it's computer generated, but let me tell you, it's all real. If you don't believe me, then watch the live performance of Drive and Disconnect. Nao also knows how to use her massive range. She even puts it on full display like in Bad Blood and Love Supreme. She can hit high notes like in Apple Cherry, low notes like in in Orbit, or hit both along with the middle in the same song like in A Life Like This. When Nao sings, she often has her voice follow the production in the song. If you listen to Inhale Exhale, Golden, Give Me a Little, or Fool to Love, you can get a full picture of it. Nao's singing style is based on vocal jazz. You can clearly tell from her phrasing, ad libs (Inhale Exhale, Golden, Gabriel), and improvisations that her major influences are jazz singers. As amazing as Nao's singing voice is, what also works for her is her songwriting ability. Her songwriting may not seems amazing at first, but for her singing style, it fits perfectly. It is almost as if she bases her lyrics on the production of her songs then allows her singing voice to follow suit. Some of Nao's best lyrics can be seen in Orbit, Saturn, Blue Wine, Bad Blood, It's You, and Adore You.

If you are in the mood for Nao's "wonky funk" sound check out her projects So Good - EP and For All We Know. If you want something more atmospheric, but still having the "wonky funk" sound, listen to her project February 15. If you want something that less on the electronic side, but a good mix of Contemporary and Alternative R&B, listen to Saturn.

Some of my favorite Nao songs: So Good, Adore You, Take Control of You, Inhale Exhale, Apple Cherry, Golden, It's You, Get to Know Ya, In the Morning, Bad Blood, DYWM, We Don't Give A, Blue Wine, Make it Out Alive, If You Ever, Gabriel, Orbit, Love Supreme, Curiosity, Drive and Disconnect, A Life Like This, Antidote, Feels Like, Woman.

Also, here's a little Spotify and Apple Music playlist for her.

Here are some good performances: COLORS Performance, Tiny Desk Concert, KEXP Performance, Glastonbury 2015
