What happens when hip hop meets NASCAR: "They seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum, but many drivers (Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt, and Jeff Gordon) have spoken about their love for NWA, Tupac, Nelly, Fabolous. Denny Hamlin is a big fan of JAY-Z, Travis Scott. Dale Jr is friends with J Cole"

Phonte heaps praise on new film about making it as an older rapper: The 40 Year Old Version

Posted: 11 Oct 2020 04:21 AM PDT

Phonte: This is a gorgeous flick, man. Some quick thoughts: This story is about a lot of things, but the primary theme is grief. 2016 was a year of tremendous loss for me, and I didn't know what to do with myself artistically or otherwise. I was stuck. This film does a great job of showing that struggle.

The castings of real-life rap legends @stylesp and @sadatx serve as both cameo and commentary: Even if you're extremely talented, the line between "making it" in hip hop and working a blue collar job is razor thin.

This movie also has one of the best illustrations of what it really means to sell out. Selling out isn't about moving to a bigger platform. Selling out is when you specifically have to change or omit key parts of your truth in order to do so.

I love the way Radha Blank (@RadhaMUSprime) script reveres the art of battle rap. Battle rhyming is a discipline that's just as expressive and theatric as anything on Broadway. I don't think we get a juggernaut like Hamilton without modern day battle rap culture paving the way.

The comparisons to early Spike are inevitable (and warranted), but #The40YearOldVersion is neither tribute nor pastiche. This is an absolute joy to watch and will resonate deeply in the heart of any artist. Well done, @RadhaMUSprime

New York Times review - Rapper's Delight, Radha Blank's film is an intimate, epic reckoning with age, ambition and everything else: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/08/movies/the-forty-year-old-version-review.html
