Kanye West Megathread: He pissed on his Grammy, he's posting his full Def Jam Contract, is talking about getting artists together to get more from labels and trying to get in contact with rich music industry people

Day 1 Thread

Day 2 Thread

Peeing on Grammy

Here's his feed, if someone wants to take the important tweets/make an imgur album and format them for reddit, pls...

This thread is about Kanye, if you want to complain about moderation, feel free to do so in the Daily Discussion thread, but you're drowning out the Kanye discussion doing it in this thread.

Here are the threads that this is replacing:

This is in reverse chronological order and is abridged:

90% of the record contracts on the planet are still on a royalty A standard record deal is a trap to NEVER have you recoup, and there's all these hidden costs like the "distribution fees" many labels put in their contracts to make even more money off our work without even trying.

Other's have come out in support of Kanye taking on the labels, including Hit-Boy and Kenny Beats (thread here).

Hit-Boy posted this on Instagram:

I haven't been a fan of Kanye on a personal/ human level since he told me face to face he stopped picking my beats because I worked with Beyoncé. this is after I produced niggas in paris , clique, and a myriad of other songs / projects for him and his label GOOD Music in the 2 years I was signed with them. This tweet is something I can agree with though. @umpg has held me in what the last 3 lawyers Ive hired have referred to as the "worst publishing contact they've ever seen" since I was 19 years old. Im 33 now and have multiple Grammys, produced a lot of your favorite artists biggest songs on top of turning in over 450+ records since I first signed and @umpg still doesnt have it in them to simply be fair. If they're doing this to me with all I've accomplished through hard work I can only imagine the kids who don't have big placements/ proper guidance. If I have to be the one to get blackballed for telling the truth and trying to set the next generation free then so be it. Btw I produced 10+ joints on the CURRENT number one album in the country D2. @umpg @polowdadon @jodyagerson @iamwalterjones and the company who's helping me on the management side @rocnation let's fix this. Slave deals are still very real /rampant in 2020. @universalmusicgroup

Kanye's response:

HI GUYS ... TRUST ME WE WILL NOT STOP ... HITBOY FIRST TO STAND UP ... I DIDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HIM PRODUCING FOR BEYONCÉ ... I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE FACT HE WAS SIGNED TO ME AND I DIDN'T KNOW BUT I KNEW JAY AND BEYONCÉ AND HIT-BOY ... JUST FOR CLARITY

More tweets (in reverse chronological order):

TRUST ME I WONT STOP UNTIL ALL IS FAIR TRUST ME FROM NAT YE AKA BABY PUTIN

Back to tweets:

More tweets about music industry/masters:

THIS MOMENT IS GOING TO CHANGE THE MUSIC INDUSTRY FOR GOOD ... I FEEL SO HUMBLED AND BLESSED THAT GOD HAS PUT ME IN A STRONG ENOUGH POSITION TO DO THIS ... EVERYONE KEEP PRAYING ... ITS WORKING ... I AM ON MY KNEES THIS MORNING

UNIVERSAL WONT TELL ME WHAT MY MASTERS COST BECAUSE THEY KNOW I CAN AFFORD TO BUY THEM Folded hands

Defends Michael Jackson and Nick Cannon:

The media tries to kill our heroes one at a time

We used to diss Michael Jackson the media made us call him crazy ... then they killed him

We sat back and watched Nick Cannon get canceled and we go to play ball in a bubble with black lives matter on our backs ... brothers let's stand together for real ... there is no NBA or music industry without black people ... fair contracts matter ... ownership matters

More music industry stuff:

I know a lot of musicians are not allowed to say anything but I can't be muted or cancelled so I'm going to say everything as always

I am the only person who can speak on this because I made multi billions outside of music no musicians make billions inside of music I'm going to change this

We our supporting other people's kids ... we could spend our whole life in the music industry but our kids gotta go work for another company when they grow up

We've gotten comfortable with not having what we deserve ... they allow us to have a little money from touring get some gold chains some alcohol some girls and fake numbers that feed our egos ... but we don't own our masters Thinking face

Kenny

What Kanye said about these contracts is true .. something needs to change in the infrastructure of the music industry to protect artists & specifically Black artists .. most of these labels see 0 problem w letting you sign your life away at a young age without any protection

I don't think you're wrong but if someone gets promised more than 4 million dollars for four albums shouldn't they be able to put an album together once a year? So isn't that $1 million a year? Isn't $4 million more than most people will ever make?

  • huge amount is recording budget you might not even see

  • 30% taxes, 15-20% manager, 5% lawyer, 5% business manager

  • duo split that in 1/2 .. trio in 1/3 .. band in 1/4 etc

  • if contract says "commercially satisfactory" they decide if it drops

  • you owe all the money back

To be fair, labels do have a business to run, and they have to make profit in some way. But I definitely agree a lot of major labels set up contracts in a way that screws the artist over if they don't deliver something that reaches commercial success.

Does flying an artist to the NYC office for a "signing party" rather than LA because California will only let you enter into a contract for 7 years ... seem like running a business? Or purposefully preying on creatives?

I'm not saying it's EVERY LABEL. But it is rampant.

[DISCUSSION] Young Thug - Slime Season (5 Years Later)

Posted: 16 Sep 2020 08:36 AM PDT

Slime Season is a mixtape by American hip hop recording artist Young Thug, released on September 16, 2015. It features production from a range of artists, including London on da Track, Metro Boomin, Ricky Racks, Wheezy, and WondaGurl, and guest appearances from Migos, Gucci Mane, Peewee Longway, and Lil Wayne.

The mixtape was largely compiled from tracks that had leaked on the internet in the previous year. Upon release, the mixtape received positive reviews from critics, while the single "Best Friend" charted. As well as "Best Friend", Slime Season also included the song "Power", which has amassed over 150 million views on YouTube as of 2020. It was followed later in the year by Slime Season 2.

Background

Slime Season was compiled from archival material in an attempt to circumvent a series of 2015 data leaks which saw hundreds of unreleased Young Thug tracks uploaded to the internet. The material may date back at least one year. The mixtape received a sequel, Slime Season 2, which was released the following month. Slime Season 3 was released in 2016. The title pays homage to Ola Playa, a rapper from Young Thug's YSL Gang who released his own Slime Season mixtape in March 2014.

Critical reception

Slime Season received positive reviews from critics, with an aggregate score of 80 out of 100 on Metacritic. Under the Gun called it "an abstract masterwork" and "2015's hip-hop answer to jamming sonic psychedelia.[8] Spin stated that "this is simply rap's foremost stylist mouthing off ferociously on all cylinders." HotNewHipHop called it "just the game-changer we expected it to be, showcasing an even more confident and experimental Thugger than we heard on Barter 6." Pitchfork called the mixtape "an odds-and-ends compilation with no coherent vision," but wrote that "Thug remains one of hip-hop's most exciting stylists" and pointed out the tracks "Freaky," "Draw Down," and "Wood Would" as highlights.

But, Burgess was often told that his "twang was too loud." He relocated to Nashville, TN, in 2010, and was welcomed with open arms. Burgess started writing with Warner Chappell Music in 2015, where he began stockpiling major cuts across all genres like Big Loud's multi-week #1 smash with Morgan Wallen's "Whiskey Glasses" (3X PLATINUM), Tyler Rich's GOLD-certified "The Difference," Pat Green's "Drinkin' Days" (Texas radio #1), Lil Wayne's "Dreams," Martin Garrix & Troye Sivan's "There for You," Dierks Bentley's "My Religion," HARDY's "SIGNED, SOBER YOU," and many others. In 2009, Kinetics & One Love started releasing experimental hip-hop projects and writing and producing for other artists.

Derrick Milano profile:

On one of the busiest days of music releases so far (March 13), a certain name in the credits keeps reappearing. By now, Derrick Milano, a Philadelphia, Pa.-bred artist, has slowly but surely earned the trust and respect of the hottest stars. He landed credits on DaniLeigh's new track "Levi High" featuring DaBaby; Rich The Kid's new album, BOSS MAN; and and Kiana Lede's "Forfeit" featuring Lucky Daye, with plenty more in the works behind the scenes.

Although being a recording artist was always the goal at the top of the list, Derrick Milano is best described as the man who continuously refuses to be boxed in. His ability to shape-shift to fit whatever role is needed to bring the best out of any track being worked on, makes him an undeniable influence in the room as a production connoisseur. From A&R-ing a huge chart-topping hit from start to finish Megan Thee Stallion's "Hot Girl Summer", to ad-libbing on records including Nicki Minaj's "Yikes," to co-writing for singers such as Justin Bieber, Kehlani, and Kiana Lede, Milano's artistry and capacity to help other artists knows no bounds.

Before the high profile studio sessions with artists such as Nas, Cardi B, Juicy J, and Minaj lies a lifelong journey of chasing dreams. Milano took no shortcuts, though, and the quest has been documented to prove it. From singing in the church choir, to scrolling for hours on SoundClick looking for beats to rap over, to battle rapping in high school and eventually hustling endlessly to make a name for himself in college, Milano built up his career brick by brick, ensuring the years of work would prepare him for his pivotal moment.

What would you say has been the pivotal moment so far in your career?

I worked on "Simon Says" for Megan Thee Stallion with this artist named Wolftyla. Juicy J brought us in on the project. Megan ended up cutting the hook, doing her own thing to it, and then the song kind of blew up on her project on Fever. Juicy J produced it and then Juicy J was calling me every day like, "Megan needs stuff. Megan needs stuff." We were sending ideas and I said, at the end of the day, whatever I could do to help, I'll help. So he told me that she wanted to do a song with Drake, and Juicy said we just need to come up with a dope idea that would be good for them both. I knew it was going to be hard because Drake is one of those artists that's impossible to work with or get to.

We had a whole bunch of beats sent over. The beats were OK, but they weren't strong enough. I got into the studio with this producer named Bone Collector. He pulled up this one beat and I did the "Hot Girl Summer" hook. For that inspiration, a girl I used to deal with was just posting on Instagram and she was constantly like "hot girl summer" and every girl was repeating the "real a-- b---h give a f--k 'bout a n---a" (from "Act Up" by City Girls). So I decided to flip it and make it a n---a perspective.

I sent it back to Juice. I said, "I think this is the one, but I think it's missing your drums. It's not ratchet enough." So I brought Juicy in on production. We ended up giving the hook to Ty Dolla $ign. Gave it back to Megan, and she did her part.

We were about to put it out, but we were like, "It needs something." Shout out to Murda Beatz. He introduced me to Nicki Minaj. That's, like, my sis. Me and Nicki started building up our relationship.

At that time, "Hot Girl Summer" was the biggest conversation and it was summertime when I met her. I was telling her about this record Megan got, and Nicki said Megan is dope and that she'd love to work with her. I told her it would be dope if she put a verse on it. I just planted the seed. One night, they were on Instagram Live and Megan asked Nicki to get on the record. It was like, "Let's do it." I pulled up on Nicki, she got on the record, and boom -- the song came out.

You've been in the room with some of the best rising talent. Who are some people you really believe in?

Kiana Lede. I did a lot on Kiana's new album and I'm excited for people to hear that, for real. I was really excited about Pop Smoke. That's my dog. My favorite artist is 50 Cent. When I had the opportunity to work with Pop Smoke, I just thought of how Eminem, Scott Storch and Dr. Dre got to work with 50 Cent in that era, I obviously never got the chance to work in that era. I was thinking, now maybe we could create that with Pop Smoke since he reminded me so much of 50. Bringing him into a world where we can make his sound so universal but still New York.

Alicia Nicole

She's a South Florida R&B singer, here's a taste

London Jae

Was on Young Thug's early mixtapes, signed to B.o.B, then Grand Hustle, has written with Rihanna and Beyoncé. He co-wrote Bhad Bhabie's "Gucci Flip Flops," Hitmaka's "Thot Box," Tinashe's "Like I Used To," and most importantly, Cardi B's "Bartier Cardi". He talks about writing in this interview

Good Intentions

Cash co-wrote Turks and Codeine.
Earlly Mac co-wrote Coast to Coast

Corbin has vocals on Bag
