Kanye West claims he will not release new music under his current contract with Sony and Universal

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 05:09 PM PDT

EDIT: He's now going on a Twitter rant, see updates below.

TL;DR: Another tweeting storm from Kanye where he says he isn't dropping music until his contract expires. He's also said that he is waiting to meet Jay-Z and has publicly asked Drake and J. Cole for apologies. But probably the most outlandish statements he's put out today are comparing himself to Nat Turner and declaring himself the new Moses.

"I'm not putting no more music out till I'm done with my contract with Sony and Universal ... On God ... in Jesus name ... come and get me ⛷️"

Are you guys taking Kanye's word for it? He's been having issues with his contract for some time now, and in 2019, sued EMI / Universal for a clause in his contract that states he can never retire. The exact clause reads:

"At no time during the Term will you seek to retire as a songwriter, recording artist or producer or take any extended hiatus during which you are not actively pursuing Your musical career in the same basic manner as You have pursued such career to date," per NME.

As of now, it looks like Kanye's previously announced DONDA will not be dropping anytime soon, or maybe Kanye is trying to pull some sort of reverse psychology with his fans.

TWITTER STORM BELOW

UPDATE 1: [NOW DELETED] "Vibe do come holla at me ...I'm in Calabasas ... come and get me"

UPDATE 2: "Vivendi family I'm in Calabassas... come holla at me"

UPDATE 3: " I need a publicly apology from J Cole and Drake to start with immediately ... I'm Nat Turner ... I'm fighting for us"

UPDATE 4: [NOW DELETED] "I'm the 2nd richest black man in America ... I need all my people with me for us to get free"

UPDATE 5: [NOW DELETED] "I'm waiting to meet with Sean Carter also"

UPDATE 6: "My bad I meant Shawn ... no disrespect to my big bro"

UPDATE 7: "I'm not industry bro ... I don't care... I'm in service to Christ ... we need world healing ... I miss my brothers... I refuse to argue with black men on labels we don't own... even twitter"

UPDATE 8: "I have the utmost respect for all brothers ... we need to link and respect each other... no more dissing each other on labels we don't own"

UPDATE 9: "I'm sure Steve Stoute was hurt that he didn't do the McDonald's deal ... Steve's a good man Trav is a good man ... my brothers let's rise up ... we don't even own these companies"

UPDATE 10: "Let's stop killing each other ... let's show God that we are Gods people ... my ego gets the best of me too... God doesn't measure us by money in his kingdom ... let's love each other... I love my brothers and I miss my friends ... real talk"

UPDATE 11: "I deleted that tweet about riches... the wealth is in our love of family and our brothers and our service to God ... let's rise up... let's communicate"

UPDATE 12: "I need to see everybody's contracts at Universal and Sony / I'm not gonna watch my people be enslaved / I'm putting my life on the line for my people / The music industry and the NBA are modern day slave ships / I'm the new Moses"

UPDATE 13: 🥱(Reaction to Kevin Durant and Steve Stoute saying don't vote for Kanye West)

UPDATE 14: "Steve Stoute is a good man ... this is my brother ... I'm disappointed with a lot of his recent decisions but Steve is my brother... I understand bro,and I'm here for life"

Deadstar will go down as the essential piece born of the short-lived florida ignorant soundcloud trap scene.

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 02:15 PM PDT

Say what you want about how Smokepurpp's career turned out, but he was one of the most essential figures of the Broward/Florida explosion of "SoundCloud rappers".

Along with X's "Look at Me", Lil Pump's "Lil Pump", and Kodak Black's prolific early releases, Smokepurrp was at the forefront of this movement with his breakout track "Samsung Jumpin" and subsequent certified SoundCloud classic "Ski Mask". Upcoming Florida rappers also included Denzel Curry, Ski Mask, Robb Banks, Yung Simmie, Wifisfuneral, Pouya, and Fat Nick just to name a few.

As this wave progressed, however, Smokepurp's Florida contemporaries surpassed him tremendously, leaving many fans considering his career a wash at this point.

During the peak of the Florida SoundCloud era in late 2017, smokepurpp was still relevant, but certainly not the main focus of the rabid fanbase of grimy south Florida rap/trap. While his fellow Floridians were exploding with near mainstream followings, Smokepurpp was no longer the main focus of the scene he once was a pioneer of. He still had an impressive following, but it just seemed he wasn't living up to his potential. As doubters began to flee and loyal fans who were trained to his sound stuck around, Smokepurpp had been teasing music relentlessly for months. Then, on September 29th, 2017, Smokepurpp released his debut mixtape.

Deadstar.

The tremendous dopamine rush of pure unadulterated ignorant mumble rap with weird, futuristic and extremely hard hitting production that I had yearned for so long being mainlined into my bloodstream had me hooked.

I saw about the reaction I expected in the first impressions thread, which was mostly positive but not at all overwhelming. Although I was in love with it, dif strokes for dif folks ya know.

Then, as time when on, just as nearly everyone else in the hip hop community did, I had essentially forgotten about Smokepurpp, save for checking out a few singles that weren't interesting.

But suddenly, earlier this year, I noticed a very positive shift of this sub's general outlook on the project. Singles from the album were posted and modestly upvoted. Positive comments praising the album and its energy began to pop up more frequently. Could it be possible that Smokepurpp revives his career off the resurgence in popularity of a previously released project? Pending the release of Deadstar 2, almost every fan of Smokepurpp was eagerly awaiting a second-chance breakthrough to rap superstardom.

Fast forward to today. "I'm a muthafuckin boner" is as far as I'll go because we are all aware of Smokepurpp's current career situation, and the current state of his career is not the focus of my argument. Well, not really an argument, more of a declaration.

Deadstar by Smokepurpp was absolutely the most perfect embodiment of a short lived sound, region, era, scene, style that was a flash in the pan but is indisputably a highly notable movement in the history of a genre that is a staple to the countless people that devote indescribable passion and obsession to, which happen to be the people in this very community.

And yes I am on a fairly substantial amount of adderall.

[DISCUSSION] Dr. Yen Lo (Ka & Preservation) - Days With Dr. Yen Lo (5 Years Later)

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 12:29 PM PDT

Days with Dr. Yen Lo is a full-length studio album by Kaseem "Ka" Ryan and Jean "Preservation" Daval together known as Dr. Yen. It was released on May 16, 2015 via Pavlov Institute Records. It was recorded at The End, and produced entirely by DJ Preservation with Tim Fodness as co-producer. The group's name, as well as the album title, were inspired by Khigh Dhiegh's character Dr. Yen Lo from John Frankenheimer's 1962 film The Manchurian Candidate.

Ryan and Daval previously collaborated together on Ka's 2014 extended play 1200 B.C. The trailer for the album was released on February 12, 2015 via Ka's YouTube channel. Music videos were released for "Day 0", "Day 3" and "Day 70", all directed by the duo.

Critical reception

Days with Dr. Yen Lo was met with generally favorable reviews from critics. At Album of the Year, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 81 based on five reviews.

Samuel Diamond of Tiny Mix Tapes gave it maximum score saying that the album is "a work of art that feels fully realized on every level, from the Bigavelian harmonization of each seamlessly stacked Ka ad lib to the mix-mastery of each precisely-pitched Preservation sample". Critic Tom Hull said: "Rapper Ka and producer Preservation styled this concept album after the notorious Chinese doctor-hypnotist in The Manchurian Candidate, which also provides occasional snatches of dialog. The story strays but the music is hypnotic, with or without the monotone raps". Nathan Stevens of Spectrum Culture said that the album "builds the same world of anxiety, paranoia and treacherous twists as The Manchurian" and is "anti-pop-rap, meant to make listeners profoundly uncomfortable". Winston Cook-Wilson of Pitchfork said that the album "doesn't retrace the plot of the film or the book that inspired it, but instead engages with its themes, playing off of soundbytes interspersed between songs". M.T. Richards of Spin stated that "This is an album about fear, death and strategic miscarriage in buckshot-logged East Brooklyn, where the carrot of job security is no incentive to hold out hope".
