NIKI Exposes The Innermost Raw Projections Of Herself On Newest Album ‘MOONCHILD’ - Album Review

Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:34 PM PDT

In order to incite and enable immersion between product and audience, an artist must first find peace within an identity of their own. This feels like a crucial step that is skimmed over by so many, who instead attempt to grasp at situational fads or ride the influence of a given chart-topping sound. Whilst this self-explorative prophecy is sometimes never quite discovered by an artist, in most cases, it is through the process of trial and error in which their true artistic identity emerges. One prolific case in which sustained experimentation and prolonged artistic reinvention has resulted in newfound success is Indonension born, singer, songwriter, NIKI. In many ways I perceive her involvement in the cultural-bending collective 88rising, to have been the catalyst for her advancements. Perhaps the hive-mind cultural fusion and embrace of those at the forefront of a generational re-awakening was the spark that lit the flame in NIKI's solo career.

Her latest album 'MOONCHILD' is the appropriate coming of age tale that is bound at the seams with the intent of placing pop's newest enigmatic storyteller on an introspective pedestal. Where her past work has failed to entice me, due to a lack of personality and disconnect through frigid appearance, 'MOONCHILD' is NIKI's open book crusade into self-discovery. Rife with raw emotion and vulnerable stature, NIKI lays everything out on the table on what is easily her most emotionally potent and inviting record to date. If nothing else, 'MOONCHILD' is the pinnacle of that aforementioned artistic discovery and growth, as I am utterly astounded at just how grand and versatile of an undertaking the project is. After years of experimenting, 'MOONCHILD' feels like a glimpse into the innermost makings of NIKI, with a side of her obvious influences worn proudly on her shoulder.

The opening track 'Wide Open (Forward)' reads as an omnipotent piece of pessimistic foreshadowing à la Billie Eilish. Singing foreboding warnings to remain vigilant and ever skeptical of malicious charades and the fraudulent malicious intent of the world, NIKI strikes a particularly harrowing chord. Delicate yet haunting in delivery, NIKI remains minimalistic and distant to never once allow a sense of comfort or closure to the listener. We are thrown further into the baron abyss of abandonment with just how atmospherically and skeletally composed the track is. Through the orchestration of leering strings and weeping synths, NIKI removes her ability to hide, whilst making a bold statement through her evident stylistic understanding.

The record is dissected into three divisive phases that essentially dictate either the gradual integration into an immersive world or stunted realisations that break the surreal veil. Though 'Wide Open (Forward)' is recognised as the official opener, it is 'Switchblade' that symbolises the initial integration of NIKI's naive infatuation with foreign concepts. Detailing her optimistic fascination with a land unfamiliar to her, NIKI sings of feeling invigorated and seemingly invincible when placed in new scenery. This sentiment is made to feel so real with just how forceful and grand NIKI's delivery is, as she exhibits her reluctance to shy away from unfamiliar challenges on a scale of epic proportions.

This idea of NIKI getting lost and devoured within the promise of new temptation bleeds into the sensual electro-funk cut, 'Selene'. Built upon a spine of bellowing bass embellishments and shimmering cascading synth refrains, the track boasts an inescapable groove to match the thematic emphasis of the yearning for physical intimacy. NIKI becomes the host body of a divine temptress who finds solace through a lustful desire to dance. With its many references to the idea of losing control of her own body and being elevated spiritually, the track feels like an otherworldly ascension that is perfectly illustrated by just how delicate and frivolous NIKI is vocally.

With an emphasis placed on constructing a rich explorative narrative that is fixated on inviting listeners into an immersive experience, the album tends to lose sight of its practical application at times. Whilst vocally a display of NIKI's extravagance and diversity, given the demonic vocal inflections she adopts to craft her nocturnal hellscape, 'Nightcrawlers' falls flat production-wise as it leaves me desperately wanting more. With its paper-thin percussion and near evaporated, unpronounced synths, I am left pondering what could have been had the instrumental received the same dynamic attention as the vocals. The same issue is replicated on the plague-prone cut from the second phase, 'Pandemonium'. In theory, the track circulates the oxymoronic notion in which NIKI claims the chaos is a place of familiarity that provides her a sense of catharsis, yet in execution, none of that proposed mayhem is to be found. I get what she's going for but I ultimately don't care for her overly stripped back and bamboozling contentious approach, as something is very clearly lost in translation. She sells us a dream that ultimately leaves a lot to be desired.

Come the formal introduction of the second leg of the record and NIKI is no longer fixated on the material wonderment of her new world. The track that oversees this transitional overhaul and newfound expression of loss and provocative torment through the figurative fixation on the organic world is 'Tides'. It is here in which NIKI exudes her vocal prowess, as she feels like a vocal chameleon given just how seamlessly she adopts the influence of her contemporaries. Whether it be the initial blood-curdling lead vocals, which strike a resemblance to the likes of Billie Eilish, to the dainty aftermath of gospel frailty that reminds me of Lana Del Rey, to the distorted, violent thrashings that feel like one of Tkay Maidza's left-field experiments, 'Tides' is a shapeshifting masterclass that demands the world from its performer, and it utterly mind-boggling how cohesively NIKI can pull such a feat off.

We revert back to a more logically sound frame of reference and emotional clarity on the gripping ballad 'Lose'. With its driving piano refrain and serene strings that wane in and out of focus, the instrumental harbours a sense of elegance and maturity, yet never once interferes with NIKI's heartbreaking performance. Typically I find the piano ballad a redundant trope given just how many underwhelming renditions tend to be particularly performative and disingenuous, but NIKI truly pours her guts into her delivery. This is NIKI at her wit's end. Emotionally withered, her wailing and grand projection utilises the space given to her as she unleashes what may be her most moving performance to date. With lyrics such as "And I know, whatever this is ain't love, so I'm goin', I'm gonna let you go, let you go", NIKI is blunt and forthcoming with her emotional growth, she is beyond the tricks and deceit, as 'Lose' marks a sense of formal closure to the narrative and second phase alike.

Regardless of how meticulously crafted and constructed the body of work is, 'MOONCHILD' remains prone to the unremarkable amateur stature of the formerly teething NIKI sound. No track is quite so offensively outdated as the opener to phase three 'Plot Twist'. Ushered in by these hideous, densely layered vocals that have been drenched in synthetic processing, it becomes near impossible to identify a humanoid presence. The woeful vocals are only worsened as they slather atop a clunky, flavourless tropical beat that sticks out like a sore thumb when looking at the overarching palette and direction of the project. Accentuated by a generally sickeningly sweet, candy cane pop sound and you have a piece of what sounds like a 2011 hottest hits compilation. Try as I might to justify the track's inclusion, not a single element even attempts to comply with an otherwise streamlined direction.

It isn't until the back end of the record where NIKI truly exhibits her knack for emotional climax. In perhaps the most enchanting and euphoric cut on the record, 'If There's Nothing Left' is NIKI's cry for emotional stability, a sound she suits all too well. Fragile and breathy in measure, NIKI is as light as a feather as she levitates above a world on the brink of extinction. The instrumentation matches with its sorrow-stricken strings and the boyish naivety of plucky keys, everything feels detoxed and liberated from the crumbling reality she anticipates lyrically. Though methodically craft, I feel her one-note narratorial coverage haunts her as it tends to veer into the realm of tedious and undermined. Despite the inconsistencies of its predecessor, the conclusive cut 'Drive On' is the indulgent sense of acceptance that grants a sense of closure to NIKI and listeners alike. That raw, stripped-back sound that plays out as the naive meandering of someone in an enchanting trance, sounds like something out of Taylor Swift's 'folklore'. Every single element is simply breathtaking as the swelling strings and weeping keys act as the soundtrack to NIKI's ghostly ascension to the divine spirits. Chanting "children of the moon" NIKI feels at one with the forgiving organic world, freed from her old self, and with that, her downfalls.

Much like her narratorial evolution throughout the album, 'MOONCHILD' feels like NIKI's ascension to her greater talents. Where I have historically found her music to be unremarkable and particularly unidentifiable, it feels as if she is now finding her voice. Make no mistake 'MOONCHILD' remains rife with opportunity to make parallels between NIKI and her contemporaries, but this is a testament to her versatility and diversity rather than a critique on blatant thievery. With that being said, moving forward I would love to see NIKI flip those influences further until capable of truly forming her own indisputable self. This is the beginning of a NIKI who has been hiding behind misinterpreted trends and sounds. Although there are areas of inconsistencies, I find 'MOONCHILD' to be NIKI's most honest and introspective listen to date, and it asks for a reciprocated maturity from its audience.
