If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

French Hip Hop's current landscape

Posted: 12 Sep 2020 05:12 PM PDT

French rap has been growing incredibly fast in the last years, be it in terms of variety, influence and popularity. If you want to know more about it then you're on the right post I guess?

The landscape right now is extremely broad and varied so I'll try to make a concise list of the strongest influences (in my humble opinion) in the french rap scene right now.

PNL

PNL ("peace and lovés" or "peace and money") is a duo composed of Ademo and N.O.S, two cold, massive and elusive brothers. They are from Essonne (91), a suburb near Paris.

The Parisian suburbs (which are nothing like the suburbs in the US) are currently a powerhouse of french rap, especially Essonne with other big names such as Niska and Koba la D (Sales from Parisian inner city and suburbs rap albums in 2019 totaled just over 2.6 million units)

PNL is well known throughout the country for their very elusive communication (no interviews, barely any teasing/promotion, no featurings). Drake once asked PNL to interpret their single "À l'Ammoniaque", a request that the duo outright refused.

The sound of the two brothers is very spacey, with very melancholic and dark lyrics and intonations, reflecting their haunting past and current despair. They also have some uplifting sounds but still very spacey and chill.

PNL - Deux Frères

PNL - Blanka

PNL - Onizuka

Niska

Niska is also a rapper from Essonnes, who blew up back in 2015 and who was thought then to be a one hit wonder because of his style and sound. He evolved quickly and made his own recipe, dark aggressive trap with a hint of Ivory Coast popular music, and sometimes crooner pop trap with a very mellow chorus and violent verses.

His party bangers are unprecedented, honestly hard to find music that vehiculates as much energy as his in the whole hip hop world.

Niska - Siliconé

Niska - Bon Déjà (COLORS)

Niska - Bâtiment

VALD

Vald is a rapper from Aulnay-sous-Bois (93), another part of a Parisian suburb (Saint-Denis 93). He blew up a few years ago with very offensive and edgy music like Shoote Un Ministre (Shoot a Minister) and his music slowly evolved to something between conspiracist/satanic aggressive trap and hedonistic pop rap.

Like a few other rappers (there is a subcategory of French rap that I'd call conspiracy theory rap) he loves making references to conspiracy theories (Lady Diana, Reptilians, all of that) and government-driven experiments like MK-Ultra.

His lyrics are very intricate as he uses the french tongue in a very particular way.

His last two albums were very critically acclaimed.

Vald - Journal Perso II

Vald - Désaccordé

Vald feat. Damso - Vitrine

Damso

And now we have belgian rapper Damso, from Kinshasa.

His first album Batterie Faible (Low Battery) was very aggressive with very crude lyrics, honestly one of the best albums to listen to if you want to fuel your inner rage and demons. He slowly transitioned to softer and more crooney sounds while still keeping his hardcore essence in his lyrics. (For example the closer of his second album is a bad trip where he literally has s*x with his mother in the streets)

He was selected in 2018 by the Belgian Federation to compose the Belgian anthem, but because of pressure from feminist groups claiming his lyrics were mysoginistic they dropped him and Belgium didn't have an anthem for the Soccer World Championship.

He is one of the most critically acclaimed rappers in the landscape, though very controversial. Lately he has been diversifying a lot, and has become extremely versatile.

Damso - Smog

Damso - Nwaar Is The New Black

Damso - Mosaïque Solitaire

That was quite a long post, here are some honorable mentions :

Koba la D : Ignorant party bangers

Alpha Wann : Very technical flows, widely critically acclaimed

Freeze Corleone : Dark, cryptic conspiracist, nice party bangers

Lefa Crooner with good flows

[DISCUSSION] Drain Gang - Trash Island (1 Year Later)

Posted: 12 Sep 2020 05:03 AM PDT

One year ago today, Drain Gang dropped Trash Island. This surprise drop was the followup to the 2017 Drain Gang album D&G and preceded the debut solo albums of Drain Gang members Thaiboy Digital (Legendary Member) and Ecco2k (℮). The album was executively produced by Whitearmor. Yung Lean is featured on the opening track and additional production was provided by Mechatok and Lusi. A music video was released for "Victim".

How did you like Whitearmor's production?

Where does this rank all time in the Drain discog?

Which tracks are your favorite or least favorite?

Which vocalist stood out the most?

How have your feelings on the project changed over the last year?
