WATCH YO SCREW- A Primer On DJ Screw and his Music

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 03:49 PM PDT

"You could leave: two sticks, a swisher, and a fo' And a Screw tape on the counter And ain't nobody taking none of those drugs.." - ESG

Happy birthday Screw!

Preface:

This isn't meant to be a guide to DJ Screw. It is meant to be an essay/piece of writing that encapsulates why I think he's a phenomenal musician and pioneer. It isn't meant to be objective in any way. It's written out of a strong feeling that I've been getting while listening to screw tapes. I'll go into the man's life, the method behind the genre, and why I think his tapes are important. At the end, I'll recommend some of my favorite songs to you.

DJ Screw: The Life

(Most of this is from a documentary called "DJ Screw, The Life" filmed around 2001. I have a copy called this on my harddrive but I can't seem to find the actual name of the documentary anywhere.)

Screw was born in Smithville, TX, but spent his earlier days between Los Angeles, Smithville, and Houston. Gangbanging surrounded him in LA, and he heard of many gang shootings occurring around him. His mother moved him and his sister back to Smithville, TX in order to escape this violence.

Screw started DJing here around 1980, and his cousins Shorty Mac and Al-D would rap alongside him in his room. Shorty Mac gave Screw his name due to his practice of scratching a record with a screw until it was unplayable if he didn't like it. Screw heard scratching on the radio and saw the movie Breakin', which inspired him to practice scratching records himself. Houdini, Compton's Most Wanted, MC Eiht, LL Cool J and Scarface were some of the records he recalls as having influenced him.

Screw first started his Screw tapes when he had his own apartment and was regularly DJing at clubs. A friend of his named Toe was over and heard him slow the pitch of a record down, and offered him 10 dollars for a whole slowed down mix. As word spread around about the mixes, Screw had people knocking on his door for his tapes. He soon had to establish a 2-hour time frame from 8-10 in which people could buy his music, as the number of people asking for his tapes overwhelmed him. He would come out and the line of cars that were waiting outside his street would turn into a line of people outside of his gate. He recalls police kicking in his door because they thought he was selling drugs, when in actuality the people lined up only for his music. He started his store, Screwed Up Records, as he thought not paying taxes on his tapes would lead to the IRS catching up with him. Many groups such as DEA and Botany Boys owe their existence entirely to Screw, and his tapes created a new generation of Houston hip hop that has influenced people to this day.

Chopped And Screwed: The Style

DJ Screw: "The Screw sound is when I mix tapes with songs that people can relax to. Slower tempos, to feel the music and so you can hear what the rapper is saying. When I am mixing, I might run across something a rapper's saying which is important. I may ruin it back two or three times to let you hear what he is saying- so you can wake up and listen, because they are telling you something."*

– Interview with Rap Pages magazine

People often think that it's cool to pitch shift a song down an octave and slap a "chopped and screwed" label on it, which misses the methodology of the genre entirely. Chopped and screwed was more than just slowing down a song. Screw's method of slowing down records was multifaceted.

He first slowed down the turntables to get a slower vinyl sound, and then transferred this live mix to tape as it happened. This was usually a 100 minutes long, and he then slowed down the mix even more using his 4 track's pitch shifter to also give a slowed down tape sound (Source:* Red Bull Music Academy*).

You can hear flanging/phasing on plenty of sounds within Screw Tapes if you pay attention to them, as well as a lot of reverb. This shows to me that chopped and screwed music wasn't just about slowing a song down; it was about controlling time, accentuating certain parts of a song and bringing out certain vibes that were not at the forefront of the originals. It's also often underlooked that DJ Screw was, in fact, a DJ: Plenty of his songs on his screw tapes were two different songs mixed together, playing at the same time (a good example of this is him mixing Scarface's "Mary Jane" and 2Pac's "I Came To Bring The Pain" together on his "Choppin Game Wit Toe" tape).

Importance:

I view screw tapes important for multiple reasons.

Screw Tapes are a snapshot of Screw's room during any given taping session. You can hear him mentioning people who are in the room with him when he's recording and people getting on the mic to talk some shit as well, including George Floyd (RIP). You can hear him just plain talking some shit over the songs, giving shoutouts to people he knows while he's mixing, and even rapping along to the songs at times. There's a very live atmosphere to a lot of screw tapes that isn't found in most rap music, where things such as punch-in recordings are common and most of the beats are premade. Screw tapes with freestyles on them are probably the best example/archive of free flow rap music creation that we have today.

I think they're also important because they provide a snapshot of what music people were listening to in the 90s-00s Houston, TX. I've always heard that due to the animosity from New Yorkers over ownership of hip-hop, people in the south and the west coast formed a special connection. This shows in screw tapes, where I hear a ton more west coast rappers like Tupac, E40, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube than east coast rappers. The exceptions usually seem to be Biggie and Nas, as well as other bigger names and legends/originators of the east. It's worth noting that Screw seemed to love No Limit Records and Cash Money Records as well, substantiating more history of the Houston-NO connection I've heard about (Houston-NO have a history of drug trafficking between each other, and after Katrina a lot of NO natives ended up in Houston, which caused a whole lot of conflicts and connections beyond the scope of a Screw write-up). But I digress. Screw tapes were very popular in the south, and just the simple fact that so many people bumped them gives us a glimpse into the musical world of 15 years ago. Forgotten/smaller artists that may not have much name recognition such as Botany Boys, C-Bo, Dru Hill, Da Brat, etc. all have spots next to artists like Tupac, Biggie, Nas, etc. on a screw tape. Listening to these tapes gives us a great perspective on the artists that may have been popping then but have since been forgotten as time has passed.

How To Listen:

After trying to jump into individual songs off screw tapes, I've found that a lot of the time individual songs on a screw tape are awkward to listen to if you're not used to the atmosphere. They often contain transition material from the previous song (an artifact of the cassette tape format that we're not used to today) and putting on the song will often leave you searching for a tempo. I firmly believe screwtapes are best listened to whole, as they originally were intended to be listened to on an unsegmented cassette.

However, I find that it takes some acclimation to get into screw. I've gained a new appreciation for the music after sipping some codeine but neither Screw nor me think it's necessary to appreciate the music. It's due to this acclimation period that I'll be listing some of my favorite Screwed Up songs in the hopes that some of you can get into the genre, even if I hope that you would have the patience to sit through a whole tape.

Songs:

2pac- Picture Me Rollin'

2pac- Hail Mary

2pac- All About U

2pac- It Ain't Easy

8 Ball & MJG- Reason 4 Rhyme

Nate Dogg- These Days

R. Kelly – Body's Calling

Phil Collins- In The Air Tonight

S.O.S Band - No One's Going To Love You (Like I Do)

Brandy - Wanna Be Down

I hope y'all enjoy, and rest in peace to the legend.

Halsey: No jokes right now. I have dedicated my career to offering education and insight about bipolar disorder and I'm so disturbed by what I'm seeing. Personal opinions about someone aside, a manic episode isnt a joke. If you can't offer understanding or sympathy, offer your silence. A lot of people you know probably have bipolar disorder and you aren't aware of it. Taking this opportunity to make offensive remarks and villify people with mental illnesses is really not the way to go...this is the exact triggering shit that causes people to keep quiet about it. you can hate someone's actions or opinions without contributing to stigma that damages an entire community of sometimes vulnerable people all for a couple of laughs. If you wanna think someone is an asshole, go ahead. Lots of people with mental illnesses are great. Lots of them are assholes. Because they are people. With nuanced personalities. But making jokes specifically targeted towards bipolar hurts more than the 1 person ur angry with. Sincerely, Human Being with a Decade Long Bipolar Diagnosis.

[GAME THREAD] .WAV RADIO- Episode 10

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 02:04 PM PDT

Hosted by Travis Scott and Chase B

Episode starts with Travis explaining the story that T-Pain was seen telling on his Twitch stream. For anyone else who missed Travis's quick explanation of the T-Pain situation, he basically said he was exhausted from being fucked up all night per usual (his words), and before finalizing Astroworld for good wanted to meet with T-Pain to see if they had any last minute ideas. Him being hungover/comedown with no sleep plus a third-party studio with supposedly strict volume restrictions led to travis being cranky then falling asleep. Doesn't get into ignoring him the days following but glad he got into it. (u/RioChalmers) summed it up better than I could
