How Do Certifications work?

When a song has 150,000,000 streams in the US or 1,000,000 sales, an artist can purchase a certification (for around ~$300). You don't automatically get a plaque when you cross the threshold. The label or the artist needs to buy it. Often artists will buy certifications in bulk before they release new music.

[OC] A Guide to Madlib's Collaborations

Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:26 PM PDT

Madlib is one of most talented producers in hip hop history. His creative use of sampling and inventive beatmaking skills have led him to be one of the most famous producers to come out of the hip hop underground scene. He's released music under dozens of aliases that would even make DOOM envious. While he has an extensive solo catalogue of instrumental albums like The Beat Konducta series, his jazz albums released as Yesterday's quintet, his solo rapping albums released as Quasimoto or some of the many other Madlib solo projects, In this post I will be focusing on his lengthy amount of collaborations with other rappers and producers.

The first part will be his released collaborative projects and the second will be the projects he's rumored to be working on or he has already finished supposedly and are awaiting release. There are tons of projects in both categories. I won't cover every single project but I'll cover as much as I can.

Released Collaborations

Lootpack- Soundpieces: Da Antidote (1999) Lootpack consisted of Madlib, Wildchild, and DJ Romes and was formed in Madlib's hometown of Oxnard, California. This LP contained Madlib's signature sampled, imaginative and sometimes cartoony sound on the beats with vocals from Wildchild and Madlib himself. The lyrics mainly concerned wack rappers. The project was hailed for its experimentation and is an essential listen for Madlib & Stones Throw fans.

Declaime- Illmindmuzik (1999) Declaime was an MC also from Oxnard. This was his debut project and was entirely produced by Madlib. Even though it was released the same year as Soundpieces, it has a completely different sound. The beats are much more laidback and follow a groove which perfectly complement Declaime's calm vocals.

Wildchild- Secondary Protocol (2003) This essentially serves as a followup to the debut Lootpack project but is still a Wildchild project. It continues on the sound of Soundpieces production wise. Madlib actually only produced 9 of these tracks with Oh No producing the other 6 so I'll keep this one brief.

Jaylib- Champion Sound (2003) When two of the most respected underground producers link up for a project, you know it's going to be amazing. It's essentially Madlib rapping over J Dilla beats and Dilla rapping over Madlib beats. The production is absolutely amazing and sees both producers taking techniques from each other. It's dirty and more blunt than other madlib releases but it is incredible. The rapping isn't the greatest ever but both of them hold their own on the mic. An underground classic in my opinion.

Madvillain- Madvillainy (2004) This album is definitely the most well known Madlib project and for good reason. This album is a hip hop classic and one of the best releases of the genre. MF DOOM's lyrics are multi syllabic, extremely clever, villainous and constantly entertaining. Madlib perfectly complements DOOM's style with samples dug up deep from the crate. The beats are quirky, unique and absolutely perfect. There isn't much more I can say about it, you need to hear it to understand how great it is.

Madlib and Talib Kweli- Liberation (2007) This album was initially released for free on mySpace I believe. It's a great project and it sounds exactly as you would think a Talib and Madlib collaboration would sound. Madlib incorporates some good vocal samples over his signature style of producing and Talib comes at you with relentless bars that covered a range of political topics.

Percee P- Perseverance (2007) Percee P had been around in hip hop for a really long time. He's a hard hitting MC from New York that was very good technically on the mic. Madlib also comes through with some great beats. They are more straightforward than a lot of his other stuff but they still hit hard. There's also a remix of this project that sounds way different.

Jackson Conti- Sujinho (2008) This was a collaboration between Brazilian Jazz drummer Ivan Conti and Madlib. I actually haven't heard this album but from what I know it's an instrumental jazz album that's very light and playful. Madlib brings the beats and Ivan Conti has some great drumming, again from what I've heard.

Guilty Simpson - O.J. Simpson (2010) Guilty Simpson is a hard hitting MC from Detroit. This project saw him collaborate with Madlib for a project. Madlib's hard, somewhat funky beats compliment Guilty Simpson's deep voice and lyrics about street life while also occasionally loosely referencing O.J Simpson's legal woes. It's similar to Perseverance and still a great listen.

Strong Arm Steady- In Search of Stoney Jackson (2010) Strong Arm Steady are an underground rap group from California. Many consider this album produced by Madlib to be their best. Madlib's beats are very lush and elevate the group's sound well. It has an upbeat feel and the mc's do well on the mic.

Madlib and Freddie Gibbs- Piñata (2014) This album is another one of Madlib's most well known projects. Here he teams up with Freddie Gibbs. Gibbs provides vivid storytelling about street life, drug dealing and his personal life. Madlib as usual compliments his artist's style perfectly with his sample-heavy, almost cinematic, but still hard hitting beats. Many consider to this to be one of the best albums of the 2010s and it's easy to see why. This is another one you really need to hear.

Madlib, Blu, and Med- Bad Neighbor (2015) This album is filled with features and serves and is a smooth project. Med and Blu both rap about living life in California and are both talented MCs that know how to properly ride Madlib's off kilter beats. Madlib's beats range from being hard hitting to more on the funky side, sometimes both. He does this while maintaining the signature Madlib sound.

Madlib and Freddie Gibbs- Bandana (2019) A followup to Piñata, Madlib and Gibbs continue to do their thing on this project. Madlib's beats aren't as cinematic and seem to be more modern than his previous work. Some of the beats are even trap inspired. Freddie Gibbs is the one who shines the most with his consistently interesting and clever bars about his life. This one is great for slightly different reasons than Piñata. Nonetheless, it's another great collaboration.

On top of all his solo projects and these collaborative albums, Madlib produced a bunch of singular songs for a bunch of MCs that are also worth checking out. There's No More Parties In L.A. by Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar, One beer by MF DOOM, or the recent J Cole response Song 33 by Noname. There are many others that I won't list but I urge you to check them out.

Edit: I forgot to include

The Professionals - The Professionals (2020) This project is a collaboration between Madlib and his younger brother Oh No. Madlib handles the boards while Oh No covers the bars. Oh No shows his ability to rhyme about topical subjects on this project. As with any Madlib project he brings the samples dug up from the crate to create a while a little more reserved than usual, still very soulful and smooth background to the vocals. Shows that madlib has been consistent for over 20 years.

Collaborations Rumored to Release

This section will be brief because, well these projects haven't come out yet or may never come out. Just seeing these names together with Madlib should make any hip hop fan excited though.

Madlib and Freddie Gibbs- Montana Probably the most certain to release out of these as it will be the final installment to Gibbs and Madlib's trilogy.

Westside Gunn and Madlib Westside Gunn would follow the list of hard hitting MCs to work with Madlib. Says it might come up around December here but who knows.

Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and Madlib Having another Blackstar album produced by Madlib would be absolutely amazing. The project is finished but according to Kweli, it may be never be released

Mac Miller and Madlib This one probably won't ever release because of the extremely unfortunate passing of Mac Miller. It would've definitely been something special. If you look hard enough, a track from the project leaked in February.

Pusha T and Madlib Both Push and Madlib confirmed that this project exists. Will we ever see it? I really hope so.

There are other rumored projects in the works but they either have very little information or maybe we haven't heard about them at all yet.

All in all, Madlib should be considered one of the best to ever do it for hip hop producers. Like I said before, these projects don't even count the huge solo discography. If this gets some attention maybe I'll do one for his solo discog or potentially another producer.
