Recommended If You Like Thread - July 25, 2020

Posted: 25 Jul 2020 11:04 AM PDT

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

The story behind the girl who says "Maybach Music"

Posted: 25 Jul 2020 02:28 AM PDT

We need to talk about Talib Kweli.

Posted: 25 Jul 2020 05:29 PM PDT

To begin, I think it's important to note how musically formative Kweli is for a lot of people here, including me. Albums like Blackstar and Quality are fantastic pieces of music that have stood the test of time. But his antics on his (former) twitter account need to be called out.

For the uninformed, Twitter user @moneyymaya made a (now deleted) remark about how rappers tend to get engaged with light-skinned black women or white women. Now, regardless of the validity of these claims, someone who has the slightest bit of social training wouldn't even bother to respond to these claims, or if they did, not spend nearly an entire month harassing a user over them. Sadly, Kweli seems to lack those fundamental skills.

Talib Kweli dragged on this topic every single day from July 6th to the suspension (or deactivation?) of his Twitter on July 23rd. that's just over Two Weeks. Two weeks of Kweli using his platform of one million followers to target and drag a woman over a point that didn't even really need to be made. All over a perceived calling out of his ego.

Moneyymaya stated that she received Death Threats over her feud with him. I shouldn't have to explain why this isn't okay. Kweli's leaving of twitter didn't even stop the harassment, as he's now moved on to attacking her with Fake Screenshots on Instagram and Patreon (?).

We need to have a discussion about Kweli doing this, and how it isn't okay. I don't necessarily agree with Maya's original comments but it in no way warrants harassment over two weeks. Kweli deserves to be held accountable for the reckless irresponsibility of his actions on twitter.

[DISCUSSION] Is Curren$y The Most Consistent Modern Day Rapper? Has He Established Himself As A Modern Hip-Hop Great?

Posted: 25 Jul 2020 08:29 AM PDT

I've been sitting with this new Curren$y x Harry Fraud tape (which is so fucking good) all day and it had me thinking... Has Spitta cemented himself as a modern Hip-Hip great by producing quality content consistently for the past decade plus? I think so, but does the general Hip-Hop community do? Now, I am a huge Spitta fan so I may be a bit biased, but I can honestly say that out of every tape he has released in the last 10+ years, not all have been classics but a lot have.

Some things that need to be stated about Siptta is his ability to pick beats. He has a fucking fantastic ear for beats and that alone have made some of his albums top notch. Mix it with the smooth flows and you have some dope music. Even lyrically, Curren$y is not the most lyrical rapper out but he can spit. I always thought he really went hard lyrically on Covert Coup and it's a reason why that mixed with ALC beats make it a classic. That brings me to another point, he picks the right people to work with. Whether it's Harry Fraud, Ski Beatz, Alchemist, Sledgren, LNDN Drugs, Cool & Dre or Monsta Beatz. He is also so good at collaborating with a producer for an entire album like he did with Pilot Talk I & II, Covert Coup, and Cigarette Boats. Same with rappers. He picks the kind of rapper that mixes so well with him and compliments the sound so well.

Curren$y started out with No Limit and then moved to Young Money but it's clear that once he ventured out himself he because Curren$y and created quite the legacy for himself which is why I only named tapes released after his No Limit/Young Money time.
