Background

Jeffery Lamar "Sex" Williams was (born on August 16, 1991) in Atlanta, Georgia the tenth of eleven children in the Sylvan Hills (Zone 3). He also grew up in the Jonesboro South projects. After a series of mixtapes, Gucci Mane signed Young Thug to his record label 1017 Records. He then released the critical acclaimed 1017 Thug mixtape which was included in numerous year end list throughout 2013. A few months later he released his debut single Stoner which peaked at #47 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The following year he signed a deal with Lyor Cohen's 300 Entertainment label. He later went on to release more critically acclaimed mixtapes including Rich Gang: The Tour Pt. 1 with past collaborators Rich Homie Quan and Birdman, Barter 6, Jeffery and the amazing Beautiful Thugger Girls (plus more). He collaborated with fellow Atlanta artist Future on the project Super Slimey. Young Thug went on to feature on the #1 single on the US Billboard Hot 100 Camila Cabello's Havana. He also won a Grammy for Song of the Year helping write and having vocals on Childish Gambino's This is America. Young Thug is known for his eccentric clothing style and his distinctive singing voice and melodies. He's known as a quick worker in the studio which has lead to a ton of music being finished and also a ton of songs being leaked. Since the Mid 2010's, Young Thug has been one of the most influential artist in Hip-Hop introducing rappers Gunna and Lil Baby to the culture. While also inspiring the likes of Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti. With this much success from critics and fans throughout Young Thug's career prior to So Much Fun. Thugger has struggled to break into mainstream stardom as a solo act. As a solo act Thug's highest charting 1st week numbers were Slime Season 3 which only sold 38,000 album equivalent units. With the anticipation of So Much Fun, Thug will call on artist he's influenced, past collaborators, and Hip Hop Heavyweights to help push him to Superstar Status.

Review

Just How it is

I loved the opening to this album because the intro is just so calm, easy, and minimal. The simple production let's Thug reflect on his past and it shows how self aware he his of his persona and who he is. The minimalist beat lets you focus on what Young Thug has to say loud and clearly.

"I done did the jackin', now I'm full rappin.' I put on my brothers, I put on my bitch. Had to wear the dress, 'cause I had a stick. You know where the bag at? Tell me where it is. I came from rags to riches, I'm the shit."

Thug here is actually "rapping, rapping" and he's sound great. My favorite line from this song is...

"No time for gibberish, all the critics hearin' this."

He knows he has everyone's attention. From music critics to his fans, this project was highly anticipated. Questions like "What will Young Thug do next?" or "Will Young Thug finally break past 30k sales first week?" He knows this is his moment and it's time to shine.

Sup Mate

Really disappointed in the final product of this song, but I do feel it's still listenable and definitely has a few quotable one liners and some of the best of the album

Future

"I crushed up an X pill in her asshole."

Young Thug

"Put my diamonds in a bowl, that look like Fruity Pebbles."

Future

"I'm so high, all I can say is "Woo, woo, woo!!!" I can't talk, I barely could say, "Woo, woo, woo!!!"

Ecstasy

Arguably the best song on the album (Pre MGK Verse). I feel the original Ecstasy was a 5/5 song with some of Young Thug's best verses on the album. I don't feel MGK trashed the song, but I also don't feel he added much to it dropping it to an overall 4 out of 5 track. Why take out lines like...

"I don't wanna talk about no hoes with my dad, yeah." and "Side note, I fucked your daughter and your hoe, yeah."

The song is amazing from the production, the pockets he caught, and all the way down to the verses. I love the weird little bell that comes in and out on it throughout the track.

Hot

"Start the Horns"

"WHEEZY OUTTA HERE"

Another Thugger banger back to back. The production is cinematic and I love Gunna opening it up. A great single for this album even if it was originally a Gunna song. I was never the biggest Gunna fan, but I feel he came in and did his job on this song. The verse was tolerable and the hook was catchy and top tier. Young Thug then teases us knowing this will be a hit record. Just bouncing on the beat with the filtered horns in the background. Reeling us in closer and closer and closer until he finally wants to say what's on his mind when the beat drops. The Thug and Gunna duo come in with another successful collaborations between the two reaching #11 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Light it Up

When I first listened to this it reminded me of Top by Playboi Carti which is also produced by Pi'erre Bourne. Maybe the repetition in the hook or the groove/bounce on the song, but either way I like both songs. What I love and noticed about "Light it Up" is Thug sounds more clearer and understandable in the way he sings his melodies. Not as much slurring, but better pronunciation. The way Pi'erre dirtys up and distorts his kick on a song that sounds very happy and colorful giving it that dab of rawness is incredible and definitely one of the more enjoyable songs of the album.

"Light-skinned bitch with a dark side".

Surf

"ANOTHER ONE" between the "Hot" duo of Gunna and Thug. This song sums up the entire album cover and album title for me. Bright green grass, clear summer skies having a great time with friends or even enjoying being by yourself. Just a fun song with a very catchy hook. Young Thug coming in rapping hard with some quotable then switching to his normal style was a pleasure to see on the first verse. Thug embracing the name title of the song with the "Totally Dude" adlib was hilarious. Gunna came in with another decent verse holding his own and keeping up the energy of the song.

Young Thug

"They can't wait to shred. I told 'em to chop off your penis, you keeping your head. (chop, I told 'em to do it)"

Young Thug

"Shawty pussy so tight I had to finger her shit with a stick."

Bad Bad Bad

I personally thought this song should of been the 3rd single to the album cause it's just so great. It's really an almost flawless song. The way Thugger comes in flowing on this one is why Young Thug is a top tier artist. Sounded like an upgraded more polished "Barter 6 Thug". Flowing and catching pockets over the raw production with ease. The beat fits Lil Baby perfectly so all he does is just cruises through it. Only thing holding back how absolutely disgusting this song is was how short it was. Only two minutes and twenty nine seconds!!!! Even though the song was great I felt it was missing just one more verse.

What's the Move

The perfect song to an ending of a Trap Disney Princess movie. The gorgeous elegant birds chirping to a summertime album with Young Thug melodies and a glimpse of what sounds like Purple Hair Uzi. What more can you ask for? Such a beautiful song and one of my personal favorites of the album. Felt like 2016 Uzi with the flows he was rapping with, bright production and the braggadocio stunt lines. His verse was only thirty seconds, but he came and got the business done with one of the best features on the album. Thug on the Third verse of the song is intriguing he switches the flow and extends it with flashes of styles of how he sounded on "Jeffery" and keeps the momentum of the track.

Jumped out the Window, I Bought Her, and I'm Scared

Really appreciate the liveness of these three songs. On most projects I feel this section (the middle) is where the breaking point starts to occur. Either the album can become to repetitive or becomes to fall flat on weaker songs. Jumped out the Window and I Bought Her sounds like old fashion Thug all over a stank face trap beat. Around this point on a 19 or 20 track album this is where most people lose interest, but Thug keeps its moving. I'm Scared is also another hard dark instrumental that fits both Thug and 21 well. 21 Savage still staying consistent on his features and very under appreciated.

21 Savage

"Straight up out the 6, I don't talk, I just fire. (Straight Up) Book me for a show, I put a clock on my rider. Niggas clout chasing, they don't want smoke, they wanna go viral. (21) I just cooked the opp block in a deep fryer. (Straight up)"

Cartier Gucci Scarf

Another prime example of what separates Young Thug from the pack of your modern day hip hop artist. Where most artist fall short on an hour long project, Thug experiments and pulls it off. He goes from singing a high pitch Thug vocal riff to suddenly pulling off a rough edge bass heavy growling singing voice similar to Harambe off Jeffery that some how works again. What do you prefer? Baby voice Carti or Cookie Monster Thug? What I gladly appreciate about this album is how the weaker songs are still listenable and not just a bunch of filler with hot singles.

Mannequin Challenge

Probably my favorite song off the album and I think is the perfect deep cut off the project. Who would of thought J Cole and (T-Minus) would come in with such a great fun track for Young Thug and ("R.I.P.") Juice Wrld? Cole, Thug, and Juice are artist I could never see together and they pulled off an amazing song. The vocal chant with the cute little melody makes the song undeniably catchy. Juice WRLD comes in and smashed his verse adding as much as possible and leaving nothing much more being needed to a now perfect song so late in the tracklist.

The London

Great opening single that debuted at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Which is what Thugger needed. Two established Hip Hop Heavyweights Travis Scott and J. Cole come in both on their "A" game, making one of the best songs of the summer. Everywhere I went it seemed like this song snuck its way to an establishment to be played. Travis Scott was awesome on the chorus. It was refreshing hearing him sound like his usual self compared to the disappointing Chopstix off Schoolboy Q's, CrasH Talk. J. Cole comes in guns blazing bragging and showing off on his verse with cool lines like

"I left a flock of rappers dead and buried. A verse from me is like eleven birds. I did the math, it's like two-thousand dollars every word. I'm on the verge."

Young Thug comes in and nails his part with his vocal acrobatics he does on the song making it a great closer and single to this extraordinary album.

Album Standouts

Pi'erre and Wheezy

The Production on this album was phenomenal. From start to finish I didn't get tired of this album and it has a ton of replay value. Seeing it had no beats from "London on the Track" who I feel Thug sounds best with. Pi'erre and Wheezy came in with the fire. Producing 8 of the 19 songs and all of the songs on the deluxe edition.

Gunna

2 for 2 on all his features and really stood out. He held his own with Young Thug on two of the best songs on the album. I give him props because I felt those are two key songs on the album, especially the pressure of having the opening verse to the 2nd single "Hot". Proving he can hold his own and not just a Young Thug imitator.

J. Cole

Yes Jermaine Cole!!! I don't know what J. Cole did behind the scenes, but a-lot of people don't know he executive produced the album. He also had the opening verse to the opening single, and also produced one of the best songs on the album "Mannequin Challenge".

Conclusion

I give Young Thug a lot of credit for finally breaking past the 30k sales curse he was stuck in. He hit 131k first week and went #1 on the US Billboard 200. Thug finally got the critical and commercial success his fans have been waiting for. Young Thug has now proved himself to be fighting for contention as one of Hip Hop's Heavyweight going into the 2020's.
