Background

Young Nudy, born Quantavious Tavario Thomas on dec. 17, 1992, is a rapper from East Atlanta. The cousin of fellow East Atlanta rapper 21 Savage, Nudy has been steadily building his rap career, releasing a steady flow of quality mixtapes.

He released Paradise City in 2014 and Paradise 2 East Atlanta (with Kourtney Money) in 2015. Then came Slimeball in 2016, when he linked up with Pi'erre Bourne, at the time an unkown friend of Nudy's who the rapper used to sneak into the studio to record with. Pi'erre handled the majority of the beats, complemented nicely by the likes of Metro Boomin, Jetson Made, and Myth Syzer. Over the aggressive, menacing and fast-paced trap ambiance they created, Nudy delivered a recipe of bouncy flows, reckless attitude and straightfoward lyrics about street life that he's since been known for.

He released the second instalment of the Slimeball series in 2017, again produced almost entierly by Pi'erre (with appearances from Metro and Richie Souf), and Nudy Land a few months later, this time produced entirely by Pi'erre. These mixtapes saw him getting some high-profile features from Juicy J, 21 Savage, Offset, and Lil Yachty. In 2018, he released Slimeball 3. This time, he decided to diversify his producer choice, letting Pi'erre handle only the intro. Some of the producers on this project are Metro, MaalyRaw, Cubeatz, Kid Hazel, JetsonMade and more. Over the course of these mixtapes, Nudy and Pi'erre developed Nudy's hard-hitting and fun sound, and Nudy delivered some of ATL's most unique flows in trap in the recent years.

After Slimeball 3, Nudy fans were awaiting Sli'merre, the joint mixtape that he and Pi'erre had announced already in 2017. Nudy dropped another mixtape, Faded In The Booth, on 4/20 to hold his fans over until he finally released Sli'merre on May 8, 2019.

Just before the release of Sli'merre, Nudy's song "Kid Cudi" (or "Pissy Pamper") leaked. It was produced by Pi'erre, was supposed to be on Sli'merre, and featured a Playboi Carti verse that has since become legendary for his "baby voice". A leak of this song actually was Top 1 on Spotify before being removed. The song never dropped officially as the owner of the sample never cleared it, but this leak garnered a lot of hype for Sli'merre.

In 2019, Nudy has been featured on two songs from the Dreamville label album Revenge of the Dreamers 3. He had the only song with J. Cole +1 artist in "Sunset" (a song that was rumored to have a Drake feature before it dropped), and he did the intro on the Grammy-nominated track "Down Bad". He was also arrested in the same police raid that his cousin 21 Savage was arrested at and began 21's legal problems with ICE. The operation was actually targeting Nudy. Nudy was held for a short time and released on a 100'000 dollar bond.

Nudy has announced recently that his first album, Anyways, is going to drop in february of 2020.

Review

First of all, I'd like to point out Nudy's flow once, so that I can forgo mentioning it for every individual track. Nudy has stated in interviews that he doesn't write lyrics down and doesn't even try to think of lyrics before hitting the booth : He freestyles all his stuff. As a result, his flows are always irregular, and he has a unique way of bouncing on a beat and evolving his flow patterns over the whole track. Of course, you can hear a lot of ATL elder influences in his flows, sometimes he sounds like Gucci Mane, Migos, Peewee Longway, or Young Thug... But it's clear that he has created his own lane in that sphere. And, having heard his past projects, I can tell on this album that he's still finding new flows all the time; there were a few songs on there that had flows I had never heard before from him.

Sli'merre starts with Long Ride. The production is weirdly catchy, with a wacky deforming and repetitive melody, and Nudy comes in with a lot of energy, his flows are great and his adlibs are hilarious, the way he mimics gun sounds is so over-the-top.

Mister is one of my favorite songs on there still. The beat is bright and fun with high pitched flute melodies, and Nudy and 21 are talking about murdering people over it in the catchiest way. Nudy's hook is great, and 21 delivers what he does best.

With the third song, Sunflower Seeds. Nudy catches a more laid back, bragging vibe, but his flows are as sharp as always. He is led by Pi'erre's beautiful, nocturnal beat. Pi'erre crafted some melodies that sound like a lullaby, with high pitched voices in the background.

Hot Wings is one of the songs I liked less on the album. It's fun, the beat is hard and dark, but it's a little too repetitive for me. However, it's the kind of song where it's nice to hear how Nudy evolves over the beat, the second verse especially has crazy patterns.

Shotta is the hit of the album for sure. The melody is catchy, and this time, even though the loop is short, I never get tired of it. Nudy's hook is catchy, the way he sings is nice, and his first verse is energetic. Megan comes in and complements Nudy well, she brings a different type of flow but fits in great.

The beat on Dispatch sounds like a wacky alarm and it's amazing. Nudy's slurred delivery cracks me up, again he sings a bit on the hook with good results. DaBaby has a killer verse and seals the deal for a great track.

Black Hippie, White Hipster sounds like a freestyle Nudy did for fun, with a laid back vibe on the melodic, slightly nostalgic beat from Pi'erre. The way Nudy pronounces "stamina" as "stanima" cracks me up everytime.

I want to point out how much I love Extendo. I have replayed this track probably a thousand times since it came out. Hell, I had been hooked by the 30-sec snippet that was posted on Nudy's IG months before the actual song came out. This is probably Pi'erre's best beat. The way he cut the voice sample so that it says "extendo" is genius. The song starts with the repetitive looped sample and just a couple of soft piano keys, a hook hard as bricks, and when the verse comes in, the beat blossoms into beautiful string and piano melodies and Pi'erre keeps the beat evolving with layers upon layers from there. Nudy's laid back delivery and flow on the first verse transform into pure menace, the contrast between the aggressive lyrics and the angelic beat is amazing. And then Uzi comes in on the second verse and kills it. He managed to match Nudy's flows with flows just as irregular, and his delivery is perfect in energy and melodies. I particularly enjoyed the mixing on his verse too, there are a lot of backing voice tracks that add great details.

Gas Station is another great beat for Pi'erre. The 808s hit nicely over the bouncy and catchy melodies, and Nudy spits with a high-pitched delivery, singing a little at times. It's one of two songs (the another being "Call Dat Bitch Homicide") that are mainly about a lady. Nudy loves to talk about how he's gonna fuck your bitch. Of course, as always it's more about the flows, it's just a convenient topic to freestyle about for him.

Swisher Backwood is darker, the loop sounds like it's sampled from a video game battle music or something like that. Nudy sounds like the evil boss at the end of the level.

Call Dat Bitch Homicide is probably my least favorite beat of the album, because it sounds a little too similar to a lot of other songs that Pi'erre has done in the past. However Nudy is great on it, his second verse especially.

The outro track, Joker, is a great closer. Pi'erre creates a nostalgic ambiance with strings and a slow, high-pitched flute in the background. Nudy's flow on the hook is crazy, one of the most creative flows on the whole album. He entertains with braggadocio and it feels like a victory lap, the albums leaves us with Pi'erre's famous door creak.

The trap scene is a very competitive scene filled with a huge number of good artists nowadays. Still, Sli'merre was probably my favorite trap project last year. I feel like Nudy and Pi'erre have been moving into a new and unique sound for the genre together for a long time, and this album is them showing up with yet more fresh material, having perfected their style. Not only that, but I feel like the production quality and the attention to detail here is top-notch. It still feels raw, with all the little stuff that Nudy does in the adlibs and his talking and coughing that he likes to leave in the background, but it's an effect that is carefully crafted. The mixing is also very good throughout the album.

Favorite Lyrics

Those were my favorite moments. I have also chosen some of his ramblings in the background/intros and outros of tracks from the album.

(Don't nobody know what happened)

"Black Hippie, White Hipster"

"Gas Station"

"Joker"

Grimy motherfucker (Grimy), slimy motherfucker (Slimy)

Talking Points

How do you feel Pi'erre did on this compared to the other Slimeball tapes, Nudy Land, and Carti's tapes ?

What do you expect from Nudy's next album that drops in february ?

Do you think Nudy has the potential to grow bigger and hit more mainstream appeal ?

Do you think "Down Bad" will, or should, win a Grammy ?

/r/HipHopHeads Decade Awards - Voting Thread

Posted: 19 Jan 2020 11:07 AM PST

Hey /r/hiphopheads!

Welcome to the HHH Decade Awards!

How it works

Basically, you fill in the Google Form with your ranking from #1 to #3 or #5. Each rank has a set a value. A #1 vote gets 3 points, all the way to #3 which gets 1 point (except on select categories).

Forms will have three to five text boxes for you to fill in.

Please make sure you read the form carefully, follow all instructions, and don't make any spelling mistakes.

Please be sure to not put the same album in multiple ranks!

Google sign in is required to vote. This is to cut down on vote manipulation and reduce my workload (that and I'm still mad at the fuck that voted Faneto in every spot over 500 times in every category in 2015).

You can edit your response after voting.

When Do I Need To Vote By?

Take your time, think about it if you need to. The deadline to submit your rankings is Sunday January 26th, 2020.
