TA13OO Album Breakdown: Act Three

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:06 AM PST

ACT THREE

Video Adaptation

Part One

Part Two

Intro- Through the album's second act, Denzel was able to break free from the state of denial plaguing him after his rise to fame. However, this only led to further suffering for Denzel, who fell into a state of deep depression after coming to terms with his reality. Because of this, Denzel never truly shed his Black Balloons, instead only adding onto them through not resolving his situation. The grey side of the record concluded with Denzel in a darker place than ever before, with countless Black Balloons looming large over his head. The album's third act picks up with the results of Denzel actions throughout the album so far, with his Black Balloons finally popping, and Denzel slipping into complete darkness.

THE 13LACKEZT 13ALLOON- The opening track of the album's dark side perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the act, and sees Denzel rapping from a place of anger, fear, and darkness. The song's title makes reference to how, through his constant denial, Denzel has allowed his many Black Balloons to form into the Blackest Balloon yet, too large for even Denzel to ignore. This Balloon represents the emotional breaking point for Denzel, where he can no longer cope with the amount of darkness in his life, and falls into a state of complete rage and paranoia. He shows this anger and fear in the song's chorus where he compares his life to a horror movie, and says that he feels his dead brother Treon calling to him. One recurring theme of the album's dark side is that, in his pain, Denzel tries to hold onto his success and pride. He presents this idea in "THE 13LACKEZT BALLON's" first verse, where he says that no matter how far he falls, he'll still have his fame and status. This shows how with his life in complete ruins, Denzel holds onto petty victories such as having more money than others. This furthers the complex of denial within Denzel, and shows that even though he acknowledges the terrible state he's in, he still hides behind his success. Denzel's second verse shows his anger at the system which he blames for his depression and rage. He criticizes the use of drugs and clout chasing present within current Hip-Hip culture. While Denzel makes note of very serious issues that plague rap artist here, he ignores his own choices that led him to such a dark state. It's apparent that Denzel is still in a similar state of denial as he was on the albums first act here, but instead of drowning out truth with money, he now uses blaming of the culture to suppress his issues. Overall, "THE 13LACKEZT 13ALLOON" shows that despite going through change throughout the album so far, Denzel hasn't really progressed, and this will only further his spiral towards depression.

PERCZ- After making reference to the dismal state of rap culture in the last track, Denzel seemingly blamed his personal issues on those of the culture at large. On "PERCZ" Denzel's denial only increases, as he chooses to completely disregard confronting his issues in favor of waging an attack on the pill popping and mumble rapping seen in today's Hip-Hop. Denzel's denial is highlighted early on in his first verse where he seems to say that he only puts his faith within himself, with the line, "In me I trust". This also serves as a reference to Denzel's distrust of the government and straying from God, since it mirrors the line "In God we trust" as seen on the back of United States dollar bills. It's apparent that after losing his faith and trust in authority, Denzel has been left alone to become the most reliable person in his own life. He continues this mentality throughout his verse, continually gassing himself up, and insulting those who do prescription drugs or don't rap as well as he does. While Denzel is outlining real issues within Hip-Hop in his lyrics, he chooses to use them in a braggadocious way, instead of simply bringing awareness to them. This is an example of one of Denzel's many defense mechanisms, after acknowledging the trauma within himself, Denzel is attempting to divert the listeners attention to those who are in an even worse place than him in order to hide his own darkness. Denzel outlines his reckless behavior on the song's chorus, claiming to not be on the level of normal mumble rappers, but also stating that he is not even on the level of the earth. This is an example of Denzel again putting himself into a god-like role. It seems that Denzel's egoism has gone truly off the rails here, much like it did on the track "ZUPER ZA1YAN ZUPERMAN". Denzel continues his bragging on his second verse where he references issues such as rappers going to jail and selling out, and highlights that he has never done these things. This furthers the idea that Denzel is ignoring his own problems to focus on the issues of others. The track ends with an ominous line, "finish em Zel". This represents a voice within Denzel's head that is pushing him towards a path of violence, this path of violence will fully present itself on the album's next track, "VENGEANCE".

VENGEANCE- After descending into a path of darkness on "PERCZ", Denzel presents the albums darkest song yet, "VENGEANCE". This track details stories of revenge, violence, and murder, and enlist the talents of fellow rappers JPEGMAFIA and ZillaKami to do so. It seems that in his angry condemnation of rap culture, Denzel lost himself to his rage, and projects it towards those who have wronged him here. His first verse shows as much, and sees Denzel threatening those who attempt to kill him. This shows that in his violent state, Denzel is making many enemies. This is a parallel to the late XXXTENTACION, who's violet nature caused him to make many enemies, and even lead to his death. Denzel will tie back into this theme with the tracks outro. Before that however, JPEGMAFIA and ZillaKami both give verse similar to Denzel's, where they warn their opposition against any sort of negative action against them. Like Denzel, they reference their own violent behavior, and cement the track as one of complete darkness. Before the track ends, it fades into a hazy Jazz inspired instrumental, this choice of sound possible references the smooth production on the XXXTENTACION track, "Moonlight", which this outro makes reference to. The outro features a short verse from record producer Mickey De Grand IV, that outlines the repercussions of a life filled with violence. One of the most telling lines from this outro is, "I can't help but smile as I load the bullet right, so excited, can't sit still, gonna catch you in the moonlight". This line references Denzel being excited to reunite with his lost friend X, and saying that he'll do so through the loading of a bullet. This bullet could be a reference to Denzel commiting suicide, but also to Denzel shooting at someone and being killed for it. Regardless of what he is referencing here, Denzel seems to be in the state of violence he's in, partly because of the loss of XXXTENTACION, and his inability to cope with it.

13LACK METAL TERROR1ST- With the final track of the album, Denzel details the state of is life after fully transforming into the BLACK METAL TERRORIST. He shows his violent nature, as well as his desire for death in this song, beginning his first verse saying, "Back, and I'm dark and mysterious, laughin' away till I do somethin' serious". This perfectly shows the character of the BLACK METAL TERRORIST as someone who could snap at any moment and is surrounded by only darkness, and that is exactly the life Denzel is living at this point on the album. He even refers to himself as the "Mark of the Beast", which is the name or sign of the devil. This line shows that Denzel's darkness has made him stray so far from God that he is almost Satan-like now. Denzel's transition from comparing himself to God, to drawing parallels to Satan, is much like the real life story of Satan. In the Christian religion, Satan was originally an angel, but was cast down to hell for his treachery. This mirrors how Denzel was innocent at the album's start, but slowly turned to a life of pain and violence. Denzel ends the album in the same total darkness that he warned would become him at the albums beginning, finishing the project with the chilling line, "Careful my angel or higher hope, I desire rope, I'm gonna live by my confidence, I'm gonna die by my arrogance, Heaven and hell is irrelevant, I be the BLACK METAL TERRORIST". This line sees the album conclude with Denzel contemplating suicide and being torn apart by his way of life, this isn't a happy ending or a hope for a better future, rather it's exactly what Denzel promised, a complete transformation into the BLACK METAL TERRORIST.

Dark Side Conclusions- TA13OO proved itself to be just what Denzel made it out as, a slow and terrifying dive into the traumas and pains that can cause an innocent man to become a monster. The album concluded with all hope seemingly lost for Denzel. However, the creation of TA13OO allowed for Denzel to explore the darkness he was hurtling towards, and also expel some of the negative energy surrounding him at the time of the album's release. This allowed for Denzel to advance within his life, and less than one year after the release of his darkest work yet, Denzel created what may be his lightest, ZUU. ZUU served as a celebration of where Denzel came from, and a far cry from the chaos of TA13OO. It seems that regardless of the darkness that ended TA13OO, Denzel was able to push past his issues and show love for the many things he still has. This album represents what may be the darkest phase of Denzel's young career, but through the dark tunnel of TA13OO, Denzel was able push past his many issues to find a spark of hope in his chaotic world.
