Album: Famous Cryp

Background:

We really gonna do background for this album? FOR THIS ARTIST? Yeah aight.

From LA, Blueface blew up over night just about a month ago. Blueface never thought that he'd be a rapper. In his Exposed video on No Jumper, he says, "hell naw I ain't ever thought about rapping." It wasn't until he heard his voice on the mic that he knew he was destined for greatness. He would tell you "he literally just walked into it." And it feels that way for everyone watching. Here's this new guy, talking off beat, making dick jokes, and seemingly a bunch of people are into it.

Your initial thought might be that Blueface got his name from being a Crip, but no, it came from the blue $100 bills which feature Benjamin Franklin with a blue hue over his face. There is not much information out there on Blueface yet. He hasn't done many interviews yet, but his music speaks for itself.

Review:

It would be stupid to start this review with anything other than addressing the number one criticism of Blueface -- his flow. But I write this to tell you that Blueface is not stupid and knows what he's doing. As a Youtube comment I read once said, "Blueface isn't off beat, the beat is off him." And if you don't want to take an unsourced Youtube comment's word for it, take it from the man himself. "I could sit here and talk off beat // My shit still slap like a pimp on his worst day." His flow is not a bug, but a feature. Blueface invented a way to keep people interested. How could someone flow this off beat and still make it sound good? The answer is with hilarious punchlines, quoatables for days, catchy hooks that stay in your head and classic bouncy LA beats.

At a short 21 minutes, and no song exceeding 2.5 minutes, Blueface does not overstay his welcome with Famous Cryp. Each song comes at you hard with Blueface rapping about bitches and gang banging. His liveliness and charisma is a breath of fresh air with bars that are considered normal in rap. The beats are booming with bass and the snare claps are loud. Each beat is perfectly crafted to stand on its own, but Blueface complements them all by not giving a fuck about any of them.

Famous Cryp kicks off with Dead Locs, one of his most popular songs, and in the first minute of the song you know what you're in for. Blueface asks the greatest philosophical question of our time in Dead Locs, showing us that not only is he a gang banger, but one who has put thought into his life, his path, and where it's ultimately headed. "Why everybody wanna be a pimp now? // The bitches gon' snitchin' in the end." Jokes aside, it's bars like these that keep bringing me back to Blueface. His ability to drop these hilarious bars, mixed with his life as a banger, is the ultimate appeal to him that so many would disregard right off the bat.

The hooks on this project are not slouching either. Thotiana features one of the aforementioned hooks that sticks in your head and never leaves. The simple lyrics of the hook are just perfect for a hook that gets you going. Respect My Cryppin' is another hook that is great to just loop over and over. It's a much different pace and tone than Thotiana, but shows how Blueface can switch it up and still keep you interested. It's a much harder track about gangbanging, and features the hilarious line in the hook "Mop the floor, hide the wet sign, just to catch him slipping." Fucced Em is just another fantastic hook talking about receiving pussy pics in his DMs and how he didn't even ask for those.

Blueface is a great, hilarious artist that I think will have a future in rap. I hate to use this term, but when rappers started to "mumble" it was in an effort to stick out in a sea of rappers who sound the same. Why do you think Lil Uzi went from this to where he is at now? Blueface wouldn't be popular if he used a more standard flow; He'd be a dime a dozen LA rapper. But now, he's an overnight sensation and is apparently talking with Drake for a feature. I urge you to watch his verified video with Genius, and the No Jumper exposed video. Blueface is smarter than his music makes him seem, and he is not going anywhere, like it or not.

Favourite Lyrics -- I could quote the whole album but reduced it to 4

That boy got on a necklace, yeah alright

Nigga talkin' out his neck 'til I leave his ass neckless

It get tricky, fuck it, nigga finna get reckless, on the gang

  • I can seriously post all of Resepct My Cryppin', please listen to that song if nothing else.

I keep a blower for the lawn, I fucked the evens and beat the odds

Baby you see this face tat, I don't want a job

I get paid to show up like a fucking god

  • Fucced Em

Better check the Yelp review

I get up like viagra (yeah, aight)

Yeah, aight, get her wetter than Niagra

  • Put in Her Face

Niggas want beef so I had to bring the taco shells

  • Famous Cryp

  1. Does Blueface have longevity?
  2. Do you think his flow is too ridiculous to vibe with?
  3. Is he the next big thing? Would you shut the fuck up and suck his big thing?
