[DISCUSSION] A lengthy round up of french rap in 2018 Posted: 20 Dec 2018 12:07 PM PST I see occasionally interest in other music scenes than the US-one here, so I thought why not make a write-up about the french rap scene in 2018. I will try to make it an interesting and entertainign read and, who knows, maybe you will fidn enjoyment in the music even if you can't understand the lyrics. Speaking of which, I recently tested google translator. That machine does translate rap lyrics almost perfectly exept slang. I really am amazed. Small write up about me (feel free to skip): I am french and just got into rap recently. My gateway was TPAB. US rap amazed me and still amazes me because it such a different world than what I am used to. So when I took a deep dive into french rap, it was actually much easier for me because everything they rap about make just so much more sense. I can relate to what they say, maybe not because I lived through it, but I know someone who did, or saw it in the news or saw it on the street etc etc. One exemple are congolese rappers that I will talk about later. When they rap about the Congo and the war there, obviously I can't relate. But my boxing trainer did flee from central Africa and did even return there shortly recently. SO I know what they talk about instantly when it comes up. Favs/Critical Acclaim OTY First, I will list a mix of personal favs and critical acclaims of the year. All of these albums did recieve enormous critical praise from respected rap journalists like Medhi Maizi for example. They all made good numbers, even great numbers (especially SCH and even Alpha Wann) but were probably not on the top in terms of numbers. On the others, doing big numbers and less big numbers, I'll write later. Alpha Wann - Une Main Lave l'Autre Very technical, maybe too much rap for rappers or even worse, rap for rap journalists. But still, there is a concept that goes through the album, the production is amazing, very recognizable style. I would say think like a mix of JID with Pusha T without the drug talk but it is still his own style. Probably french AOTY. A cut from the middle of the album, I really like the lyrics and the wordplay here FLYNT - Ca va bien se passer Very old school with a new paint, the dinosaur actually did a repaint of his music. Remind you of the golden age of french hip hop but with newer prod. This is still rap for 40 years old, about being old, about kids, about the newer generation and stuff. Album opening that I absolutly love Dinos - IMANY Took a long time to drop but it is here and glad he took his time. Long album but very diverse. It is kind of like TPAB in a sense that it is long, personal and there is a constrution behind the album. It is not done for streams but for the album to be good. He touches on a lot of styles and does it well, there is a lot of trap but also old french school, newer technical rap, trap ballads without going full bonkers. Everything is a bit dreamy and personal. Actually, this may be the french AOTY, just becaue its less technical wanking and the album as an album is better, even if Alpha Wann is maybe more exciting. Here the opening SCH - JVLIVS Big critical acclaim but my least favorite here. It is quite unique though. He mixes cinema and rap basically, a lot of visuals and the rap album is basically like a sicilian mafia story. The references are all about southern french and italian mafia. A really new way of interpreting gangsta rap, very refreshing. And it fits, the guy is a white french guy from Aix-en-Provence, how can he rap about the life in the banlieue, what does he know about it. But the album has filler and I really am still getting used to the new trend of trap ballads with autotune (erhem, Astroworld). One of his big singles here Freeze Corleone - Project Blue Beam Ok, this one is on the side. It is wtf. Really out there. Strong technique, rap journalists say its insane but I can't judge well. It is basically a creepy drug trip about conspiracy theories. It is quite thriller/horror like with a stupid amount of references on every bar where you literally have to sit and google the stuff. Not sure if one of the best, but defintly the most crazy thing I heard in french rap this year. The intro to the album is a good intro to what to expect Isha - La vie augmente pt. 2 Not as good as part 1 and tehcnically an EP, still, when it hits, it hits haard. I am quite biased as I come from the belgian border so a belgian rapper is closer to me than a guy from Marseille. Very funny, diverse but also quite good social commentary, very recognisable style and extremly good live performances. I listened to this song more often than anything else this year. It is this good. My gf can't bear it anymore . I will still urge you to at least watch a few first minutes from this live , it is mindblowing. Seeing him in february maybe. Wild Card Kalash Criminel - La fosse au lions This album is completly bonkers. Kalash Criminel does good numbers and is pretty popular but is basically a representant of that ultra-aggressive braindead BAM BAM BAM in your head type of rap. Unashamed, the album is over an hour of length for streaming numbers, you see the point. It is almost always the same song and the bars are... not very lyrical. But he is responsible for the funniest stuff that happened this year and there is something very charming because you can see he is pretty self aware. He got a lot of renown after Cougar Gang where he basically just says that he is only good being a mofo and he fs moms like Macron (french president with a much older wife that was his high school teacher). The song got pulled from the album La Fosse au Lions after some unclear scandal about these bars which led to very serious mainstream journalists saying this sentence on tv: "The rapper Kalash Criminel....". Some even say that this album is basically a second legendary Or Noir, the big 2013 introduction of trap into France by Kaaris. And these adlibs on the album "COUGAR GANG", "SAUVAGE" etc. Also, this album cover is with a real lion. Round up of the big rappers and releases OTY The year started with Vald, a rapper that did gather some critical acclaim and huge numbers. Known for a chaotic, crazy style but also a bit dark lyrics, and generally being a bit reckless in his artistry. The elading single of his album, Xeu . I can't sit through his album, I find it bad but hey, numbers do not lie. Speaking of trap, the genre is still going extremly strong with newcomer Soolking that is just exploding right now. Afro Trap style like we know it and here is a track from his album Fruit du démon: Vroom Vroom . Not my thing but 120 million clicks on YT for Milano... Otherwise Maitre Gims is dropping his 203398573th album that sounds exactly like the one before. Orelsan did drop a music video to his extended album form 2017 with Damso that blew away the internet for its visuals. Speaking of Damso, the heavy weight of belgian rap, he dropped Lithopédion, an album that was mildly recieved as being too pop and too similar to Ipséité, his 2017 masterpiece. Here is Smog . I can't resist to link to one track from Ipséité as it is really a great album. The old french guard is still trying to find a reason to exist with Soprano with his politically correct rap on his album Phoenix . Staying on african ties and old guard, Youssoupha did drop an album with the amazing track of the same name: Polaroid Experience . Sadly the rest of the album is meh in comparision. Jazzy Bazz did also drop La Nuit with this leading track that was badly recieved as pompous and empty. He is from the same crew as Alpha Wann: 1995. Kekra did also drop his new trap album Land with the opening Batman . The mainstream compatible but critically acclaimed Lomepal dropped his second album Jeannine that recieved less praise than his first. Leading single 1000 degrés . It is more pop rap than rap rap. We can't talk about 2018 without the RnB star that explodes the charts: Aya Nakamura . Straight from Mali, she is basically reviving a whole genre alone. I rapidly was done with that album (Nakamura) but mad respect to her: here a song about... love probably . Ok, I'm done. Other names: Joe Lucazz, Moha la Squale, Alkapote, Rohff (wtf his album tho), Sofiane, Lefa (he is good) and a ton of others. [link] [comments] |
