Onika Tanya Maraj has quickly built a reputation as a strong force in both the pop and hip-hop communities. As the most well known and best selling female rapper ever, Nicki has broken boundaries in the rap scene and has opened the gate for more female rappers to do so and achieve mainstream success. Now, with the rise of a new female rapper, Nicki sets to defend her reputation as the Queen of Rap with the release of her 4th studio album Queen.

Intro

Interesting to note, this is Nicki's first album without the work pink in the title, along with the cover not having any pink on it either. I believe this to be because Nicki has always used the colour pink to display femininity and assert herself specifically as a female rapper. With the title Queen, there is no need to do so since the title is inherently feminine. Ugh her mind is so powerful.

For this write-up I thought it'd be interesting to take a bit of a different approach: Nicki has always had visuals play a huge part in her career, and so with enough stretching you can kind of see this album as a visual album. If Halsey can call hopeless fountain kingdom a visual album then I can do the same with Queen (ily Halsey).

Tracklist

Ganja Burn

We find ourselves at the ruins of where a kingdom once stood, the Queen is long gone and her name is long forgotten. But there are whispers of her return. The Queen, risen from her 3 year slumber and with an army like none other is prepared to take back the throne.

Ganja Burn is the opening track of the album Reflective, Nicki details her downfall, and most importantly how she plans to make her revival known and inescapable. Incorporating both singing and rapping, Nicki appears at her most vulnerable. This song is a definite highlight from the album and the perfect opener into what follows.

Majesty (feat. Eminem & Labrinth)

As we arrive at the castle, the Queen has swiftly returned to power. With a fierce opening verse, a mach 5 feature by the King himself, and a suffocating final verse, she shows why the throne belongs to her and her alone.

Produced by well-known rapper Eminem, Majesty which features Labrinth as well, is another standout from the album. With 2 verses from Nicki, both in completely different styles, the Queen shows off her versatility and mastery on the same track. Em's verse is a highlight too, with lightning speed delivery Em actually is faster on Majesty than on his iconic Rap God. Personally, and maybe its the delusional stan talking, but I believe with a high-budget video this could've been Nicki's shot at a #1 if this was released as the lead single. Nicki and Em both deliver stellar verses, and Labrinth provides a very catchy hook. The beat at the beginning is especially delicious, both hard hitting and makes you want to jump. The song Eminem brings a lot of hype and fans to the track as well.

Barbie Dreams

Popheads Jukebox: 6.29

The Queen's hand is desired by many, but she is a tough woman to impress. Nicki tears into popular male artists and athletes and shows why she's the best.

Probably the most notorious track from the album, Nicki samples a Biggie track and disses a ton of male artists, who may or may not have tried to get with her. Nicki's disses are clever and brutal, quickly moving from one to the next. A bit reminiscent of her early tracks, Barbie Dreams is both humorous and threatening.

Rich Sex (feat. Lil Wayne)

The Queen sets her standards for potential suitors with one main criteria; hes gotta have bank

Starting with not much money to her name, now with an approximate net worth of $75 million, money has become no issue for the rapper. Accompanied by label mate Lil Wayne, the duo brag about how only the richest belong in their beds. The beat is slick and a tad bit ominous, both rappers show off their ability to command the mood in a track.

Hard White

A tad bit reminiscent, the Queen recalls her rise to power and how hard and long shes worked for it.

Continuing on from Rich Sex, Nicki brags more about her wealth but also about how hard shes had to work for it. Nicki doesn't take shit from anyone anymore and demands her proper cut. This track is a bit more mellow but that doesn't mean her jabs are. Rumored to be about Cardi B, but later debunked when Nicki said the track was recorded at the same time as No Frauds.

Bed (feat. Ariana Grande)

Popheads Jukebox: 5.06

As much as the Queen desires someone with sexual prowess of their own, none can match hers.

Featuring long time friend Ariana Grande, this is one of the most pop songs on the album. Starting with 2 more laid-back verses, the song attempts to capitalize on the current trend of chill music. With that being said, it doesn't stop Nicki from turning up the heat in the last verse as she increases her tempo, proving shes always finishes off strong.

Thought I Knew You (feat. The Weeknd)

The Queen meets a former lover in the middle of the night.

Featuring The Weeknd, Nicki and Abel detail some of their previous relationships and their downfalls. Possibly about his breakup with Selena Gomez, the emotion in Abel's voice is what carries the song. Abel's voice suits the track so well and goes surprisingly well with Nicki's softer singing voice.

Run & Hide

Nicki delves deeper into a chill R&B sound as she continues to think about old lovers.

Softer tracks like this do a very good job of showing off Nicki's range. Hip-hop, R&B, pop; chill, viscous, fun, and fierce; Nicki demonstrates that she can suit any genre, her Cheek to Cheek is coming.

Chun Swae (feat. Swae Lee)

I've been trying to shoehorn this visual album narrative into every track and honestly at this point I see that it doesn't really work but I'm too committed at this.

The longest track on the album, Chun Swae (a combination of the names Chun-Li and Swae Lee) is the perfect transition between the chiller songs and whats next to come. Swae Lee utilizes his well known high-pitched vocals adding contrast to Nicki's sharper tone in this track. At the end of the track Nicki shoutouts numerous higher-ups from Young Money, humorously name drops the album, and thanks her fans.

Chun-Li

Popheads Jukebox: 7.63

As a challenger to the throne approaches, the Queen must appear fiercer than ever to defend her spot.

The lead single from Queen, Chun-Li doesn't lack any punch (or kick for that matter). Referencing the popular Street Fighter character, Nicki compares herself to Chun-Li in many ways (most obviously the size of their assets lmao). The track particularly shows off Nicki's rhyming skills and her ability to throw punches and put a lot of power and emphasis into her words. Although it may not be her lead single that makes you want to dance the most, it's definitely the one that makes you feel most like a bad bitch. I know when this track was released a lot of people thought Nicki was confused cause she kept calling Chun-Li the bad guy, but the point shes making is that even if you're the good guy you'll always be the bad guy to someone.

LLC

The Queen continues to defend her crown and she calls out her rival.

The Cardi B diss track: Nicki compares herself to many popular and well respected artists in the industry such as Rihanna, Beyonce, and Kanye West. Taking numerous shots at Cardi like calling out her ghostwriting rumors, Nicki does not hold back at all on this one. Shouting out Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, and Katy Perry (I swear she's referenced Swish Swish like 30 times this album, probably expected it to be a huge hit), Nicki names the large amount of people shes worked with in the past (minus Taylor), showing just how long shes been prospering in the industry. Potentially referencing Iggy Azalea, Nicki theorizes that Cardi might just be on a luck streak right now and her fame can evaporate any moment just like it did with Iggy. A highlight for sure not only before of the great and intelligent lyrics, but also because Nicki delivers hard with her rapping technique and speed.

Good Form

A good Queen keeps us fed.

I'm so glad this song was chosen as a single cause wow its so so catchy. Hook after hook, Good Form gets stuck in your head right away and doesn't go away. Nicki's beats timed with the claps are infectious and makes it impossible to sing along. On top of that the song is just a lot of fun. Nicki loves homophones (and homophobes?) and she gets to use them a lot on this track. Despite being a fun track, Nicki's lyrics aren't lacking either. Her lyrics are clever and humorous, making this a standout and fan favourite on the album

Good Form Remix (feat. Lil Wayne)

Queen: Roman Reloaded -- The Re-Up

Lil Wayne delivers a solid verse but honestly as unlikely as it would've been, I would've loved to see someone like Iggy Azalea on this remix as she fits the theme super well.

Nip Tuck

The Queen's crown begins to slip as she rethinks her reign.

One of my personal favourite from the album, Nicki gets to show off her vulnerable side again. Mixing singing and rapping, Nicki delivers an emotional chorus and verses. However, that doesn't stop Nicki from turning up the speed on her last verse. Nicki blazes through this last verse detailing how this lover has done her wrong and how shes gonna rise above it. While I do love pure ballads like Grand Piano and Come See About Me, I feel like this type of song is what Nicki should stick to when wanting to show a more emotional side, as it allows her to show off both her singing and rapping abilities which also give the song great progression and depth. "A true bad bitch isn't weak or bitter.", should've really been Nicki's motto throughout this album rollout though.

2 Lit 2 Late Interlude

This isn't bad, I actually kind of like it but wow it's terribly misplaced. Nip Tuck into Come See About Me would've been perfect. This interlude should've either came before Nip Tuck or after Come See About Me.

Come See About Me

The Queen takes off her crown...but only for a moment.

Its become a custom that each Nicki album has to have at least 1 pure ballad. On Pinkprint it was Grand Piano and on Queen its Come See About Me. Featuring just her vocals, Nicki painfully begs a lover to check up on her. When you portray yourself as fierce, strong, and untouchable as Nicki Minaj does, you can forget that underneath all the gold and diamonds and glitter and money, thats shes a person just like everyone else. Money can make a lot of things easier, but there are somethings it can't buy.

Sir (feat. Future)

The Queen meets up with a friend to make preparations for her departure.

Nicki has been capitalizing on the current trend of chill music a lot on this album. Honestly I don't have a lot to say about this track cause the lyrics are kind of hard to understand and decipher lmao. I wanna say they're just flexing about their wealth though.

Miami

Queen on the run.

Continuing on with the trend set by Shanghai on The Prinkprint, Miami is of course named after the place. Although it doesn't go nearly as hard Shanghai, Miami takes on a more chill and laid-back approach which has been the trend with this album. Same as Sir, this track is just kind of flexing, which is fine not every track has to be a Chun-Li or Barbie Dreams. I like the Mean Girls reference though, Ariana is shook.

Coco Chanel (feat. Foxy Brown)

Escaping the city at night on an empty highway in a sleek expensive car, the Queen hands over her throne...but only until she returns again.

Finally, my favourite track on the album. This track brings everything I look for in a Nicki Minaj track, and the Foxy Brown feature delivers too. On a somewhat ominous and dangerous beat, both Trinidian-American rappers thrive with punches that are sharp, quick, and hard-hitting. Nicki's vocals aren't to be overlooked either, as she sings the chorus in Spanish on a dancehall beat, fitting perfectly considering who's on the track. I've seen people here and especially on /r/music do this to try and discredit Nicki and say she isn't good at rapping because she like to use slant rapping a lot. Basically instead or rhyming the last word of every line, you instead rhyme the word in the middle of a line with the word in the middle on the next line. Nicki does this a lot, her verse on Rake It Up for example, and on the first verse for this track. Nicki is a master of multiple techniques so its logical that she should show them all of because it makes her songs more interesting and adds variety. While Nicki does a great job of setting the pace on the first verse, it's Foxy who turns up the heat. Spitting a venomous 18 bar verse, Foxy's style is like none other. Rhyming off-beat and with a distinct accent, Foxy separates herself from Nicki and adds more variety to the track. Finally Nicki closes the song off with another great verse which sounds different from her first one. Sparing Cardi for once, Nicki instead takes more shots at Remy Ma, referencing that Remy hasn't charted on the Billboard Hot 100 since 2016. What I love so much about this track is how it keeps itself constantly moving and doesn't slow though. Both rappers deliver stellar verses and bring their own strengths to the song without showing one another up. When Nicki plays to her strengths she is cunning and lethal, something not a lot of her rivals can claim.

Inspirations Outro

A direct continuation from Coco Chanel, Nicki names, as the title suggests, a bunch of her inspirations. There's not much to say about this track, it could've easily been tacked onto the end of Coco Chanel instead though.

Barbie Tingz

Popheads Jukebox: 7.29

Justice for Barbie Tingz!!!! Wow this song was robbed hard, its easily one of the bests on the album. Something else could've got cut to make room for this on the album, I'm not 100% sure why Nicki took it off. This track is so fun and catchy (the clapping in particular adds to it). Nicki's bars and lyrics on this are great, both witty but also entertaining. I remember when this dropped a lot of people here preferred it to Chun-Li whereas on hhh it was the opposite.

Regular Degular

A track found on the target version of the album, this track has some similarities to bits in Chun Swae. I know some people like this track but personally I think its just okay. I mean its certainly better than some tracks on the album but, and this is hard to explain, but it kind of sounds like the kind of song you'd only find on the target version.

Sorry (feat. Nas)

Scrapped from the album due to an issue with obtaining rights for a sample, Sorry can be found rotting in the castle's dungeon. Personally the song bops, but it also stands out so much compared to everything else on the album (probably because of the sample); the only song that really sounds similar to 2 Lit 2 Late.

No Frauds (with Drake and Lil Wayne), Changed It (with Lil Wayne), and Regret In Your Tears were all released prior to the release of Queen.

Based on these numbers we can see that the overall amount of upvotes and comments have been going down? Is this cause people "switched" on Nicki, or is it simple because the album hype died down? I don't know and I don't know why I spent so much time on this section.
