Background

Rick Ross returns for his 9th studio album with Rather You Than Me after understandably taking a step back from the spotlight during 2016. During 2014 and 15 Ross released three full-length studio albums along with 17 track long mixtape. Taking a step back does not mean having a quiet year for Ross who as per usual was featured over a dozen times. 2016 also saw the release of Buy Back the Block with 2 Chainz and Gucci Mane and top40-hit Purple Lamborghini. The first single I Think She Like Me with Ty Dolla $ign was released late January along with three promotional singles dropping the week leading to the album's release. Commercially the album was a success, selling 106.000 first week and therefore being Ross' best selling album since Mastermind.

Review

The album kicks off with the absolutely gorgeous Apple of My Eye featuring Raphael Saadiq. Ross uses the track to speak about current events such as Trump and the Meek/Drake beef but he also uses the track to show gratitude for everything he has which Saadiq builds on with the hook and his verse. The smoothness continues on Santorini Greece but after that the album quickly takes a turn and shows it's harder, trap-oriented sound with one of the best songs Idols Become Rivals. Before the vicious Birdman diss starts we sadly have to sit through one of many awkward and painfully unfunny Chris Rock skits that are sprinkled throughout the album for no real reason at all. The track itself is amazing though, Ross stays on topic during all three verses, going at Birdman for his treatment of Cash Money artists and lack of loyalty.

It's not a Ross project without some bangers and Ross uses the momentum built up by the previous song but also turns the energy all the way up on Trap Trap Trap. The track features a great, hard hitting beat along with an energetic verse from Young Thug. In the end it ends up being Wale who steals the show though, he comes through with energy, flow and some dope lines but the highlight is the beat stripping back heavily during his last four bars, letting Wale shine, before coming back in for the hook again. The bangers continue over the next two songs Dead Presidents with Future and Jeezy and She On My Dick which features Gucci.

The album slows down again when it hits the halfway point with the single I Think She Like Me where Ty Dolla $ign as per usual delivers a great hook. The smooth beat filled with vocal samples alongside Ross smooth delivery makes for a classic Rozay track. The lyrics are your typical Ross flex and boss bars sprinkled with some funny/great lines but Ross proves once again that he has perfected this sound.

Another horrendous skit leads us to one of the highlights of many Rick Ross tapes, his and Nas' collaborations. These two have developed a perfect chemistry and this track might well be one of, if not their absolute best. Powers That Be is a bar filled track, only taking a small break between verses to let the track breathe. While Nas' verse is amazing, among the best of this album, Ross once again showcases why he demands respect as an MC, holding his own on this album. The bars carry over onto the following tracks with Game Ain't Based on Sympathy being first up. This song is a bit like Santorini Greece, Ross has clearly found a working formula here. The song is as expected very smooth and jazzy and once again features no hook but instead uses that empty room to just let the beat carry on by itself. Rick Ross uses the fact that all the focus is on the verses to reflect on this, not only his childhood but also how he came up in the rap game and what position he is in now. Never was a gangster, I just wanted in / No longer could I deny that I wanted a Benz are very personal lines and a topic that is not often touched upon from Ross. On Scientology, named after the likeness of the belief and hip hop, the personal lyrics stems from Ross looking around, at hip hop and at the world, reflecting on how he ended up in his position and what he can do to move forward.

Lamborghini Doors, which features Anthony Hamilton and Meek Mill, leads the shift of the album from introspective to a more typical structured rap song with several verses and a hook and the topics go from deeply personal and vulnerable to more loosely based concepts with a focus on clever lines and wordplay. Before we reach the end of the album at Summer Seventeen we get two laid back and relaxing tracks in Triple Platinum with a great verse from Scrilla and the 5th entry in the Maybach Music series which features Dej Loaf. Triple Platinum takes the best parts of what we've heard from Ross earlier on the album, combining personal experiences with clever lines while Maybach Music V is a love song. Sadly, it seems that Ross can't go out on a vulnerable note and has to deliver one final banger, Summer Seventeen with Yo Gotti. Maybe it's because the track leaves a bad taste since it ruins the opportunity of a smooth end that Ross has spent the latter half of the record building towards but I can't help find this track rather mediocre, the only track on the album I would call that.

Looking back on the album I would honestly call this for Rozay's best, and if not that then it's right behind Teflon Don. The album has a clear structure which makes it easy to just follow along, it goes smooth>bangers>smooth and personal>smooth and clever. Ross is also very focused on this project, the bangers focus on having a great delivery and the smooth tracks' verses all feel like they are there for a reason. He has also identified that one of his weaknesses in the past has been his hooks and it's no coincidence that, besides the bangers which hooks are very simple, all hooks are either handled by a guest or simply left out and replaced by longer sections of the beat taking over, something I enjoyed greatly. Speaking of the guests, everyone who was featured on this delivered their A-game, no matter if it's a hard verse on Dead Presidents, a long self-reflecting one on Triple Platinum or just great singing to raise the track to the next level on this year's best intro track. Another detail about this album that I enjoyed is that while Ross is very serious on Rather You Than Me there is room for funny moments. Besides the obnoxious attempts at humor from Chris Rock there is the intro for Lamborghini Doors and a handful of lyrics I have highlighted further down.

Discussion Questions

  • Where do you rank this album in his discography?

  • How would you have liked the album to end? Did it drag on for too long?

  • Is it respectable for Ross to make Idols Become Rivals ? Or should he just stay out of the beef?

Post Malone has out-charted every hip-hop lead artist and group in 2017

Posted: 06 Dec 2017 03:08 PM PST

I am working on a year-end chart analysis, and through gathering data I've discovered that Post Malone has actually spent more time in the top 20 of the album and singles charts of 2017 than any other lead hip-hop act. In fact, it's not even close.

Here are the stats: http://www.bensbigblog.com.au/2017/12/by-numbers-post-malone-has-out-charted.html

I did a bit more diving, and Post's Stoney, when compared with the other hip-hop releases of 2017 and 2016, has had an entirely unique chart run. It debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200, but didn't hit its peak of number 4 until 323 days later!

I've also compared Post's 2017 run to Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran. Given his recent comments on hip-hop, he might consider switching genres. He has the numbers to do it.

When you consider the stellar year that hip-hop has had on the charts (Kendrick, Drake, Migos and Future all released great albums), and the singles we've seen ("Bodak Yellow", "Humble", "Gucci Gang"), it's kind of weird that an artist like Post Malone is the one to experience the most endurance and success. He's sold a pretty staggering 12.4 million singles and albums this year.
