Top Ten Tuesday: 2016 Edition

Posted: 30 May 2017 07:49 PM PDT

Yes, I know this is really late—I wasn't planning on doing it because 2017 had already begun but I received many requests to post it anyway.

Instead of a single artist, we're seeing what HHH's Top 10 tracks of the year 2016 were. Any hiphop track that came out last year.

Rule is that the song had to have been first released in 2016, so something like "Am I Wrong" by Anderson .Paak or "Hotline Bling" by Drake (which were on Malibu and Views respectively, released in 2016) wouldn't count because both songs/singles themselves came out 2015. Otherwise, the rules are pretty much the same.

Here's how this works:

  • Post an individual song by the artist (feature verses don't count unless the feature is the sole performing artist i.e. Drake on "For Free" or Kendrick on "Never Catch Me").

  • The thread will be put into contest mode (randomized comment order).

  • Upvote the songs you like.

  • Please don't downvote!

  • Search/use ctrl+f to see if anyone posted the song already.

  • Try to limit yourself to posting one song.

  • Please post a link with your song.

  • The 10 songs with the most upvotes will be HHH Top Ten.

  • Have fun!

Here is is our spreadsheet with all past results, made by /u/elektrikg33k.

Our schedule:

5/30/17 - Top Ten of 2016 (by request)

6/6/17 - ?

please take 5 seconds to ctrl+f the thread to see your stuff has already been posted

and as always pm me if you want to see a certain artist here

ItsTheReal podcast: A lot of details never-before-revealed about Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Posted: 30 May 2017 05:24 AM PDT

On this week's episode of our podcast - A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal - we had Rory Farrell over, who is one of our favorite people in the industry. Some people know him from Joe Budden's podcast, but he's been around for a minute, working with the video director Aristotle Torres and MTV, etc. etc. etc. And it's an incredible listen, he has a lot of great stories.

...including the fact that he was a Def Jam intern right when Kanye was putting out MBDTF.

https://soundcloud.com/awasteoftime/121-rory-farrell

Rory says:

I was in meetings that interns were not supposed to be in. Like, I was in some shit that they would never be like, "Yo, you have this kid here for one month? Get him the fuck out of here!" I could say this, I guess, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has been out long enough..sigh...

Kanye comes in (the Def Jam offices) in July -- when did it come out, November of 2009? 2010? He came in, "Runaway" was about 20 minutes long and of course Kanye made us listen to all 20 minutes. This was the Rosewood era...so, the Taylor Swift shit happened, he disappeared to Paris. No one had seen him. He shows up out of nowhere at the Def Jam offices like Lupe and Nas trying to get their albums out, in a full suit. He has - I want to say Don C's son, but don't quote me - there's a child dressed identical to him, carrying a Louis Vuitton bag. Comes in and is throwing a fit at how shitty everyone is dressed. So he says, "I'm not doing business today unless everyone here is wearing a suit." So the next day, people are scrambling to find - not just regular suits - black suits, white shirts, black ties. And of course they're not gonna look like what Kanye buys. Everyone comes into the office looking like a terrible funeral. I went to H&M, I had no money. I looked a mess, a lot of execs I won't name looked worse than me.

He comes in, the child opens up his Louis Vuitton bag, throws a blanket over the conference table. Takes out two goblets - the medieval wine glasses. Pours him either white wine or water, it was in one of those unmarked bottles. And Kanye says, "I'm parched. We can begin now."

He then takes out his laptop and begins playing My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. At this time, it was called Donda's Boy, I don't know if that ever went out but it was called Donda's Boy and the idea was that it was going to be 10 tracks, each of them 10 minutes long. Runaway was 20 minutes long, Pusha wasn't on it. Kanye was singing for 15 minutes of it, at the end. What was the shit he put out on Hot97 with Beyonce? "See Me Now." It didn't make the album. He played that without Beyonce but it had Beyonce on it on the radio, she must've recorded it an hour after that meeting. It was him just singing the hook. "All of the Lights" without Rihanna or The-Dream, it was all Kanye. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but it was just Kanye West. And it was amazing.
