If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

[DISCUSSION] Aesop Rock - Labor Days (20 years later)

Posted: 18 Sep 2021 03:21 PM PDT

Aesop Rock's third album came out on this day in 2001.

Reading:
1. An amazing writup from a few years ago by /u/jordanbeff
2. The Making of Aesop Rock's "Daylight" from Passion of the Weiss by David Ma

Discussion:
1. People love rankings. Where do you put this in Aesop's catalog? What about Def Jux? What about backpack rap in general?
2. Favorite track? Favorite verse? Favorite lyric?
3. Blockhead hasn't been on an Aesop album since None Shall Pass; Most of his later albums (as well as the majority of Bazooka Tooth) were self-produced. Do you have a preference between these?
4. A line is often drawn between Aesop's more abstract lyricism in his early albums like Labor Days and his more obvious subject matter in later work like The Impossible Kid. Do you prefer one style? Do you think this is a meaningful division?
5. At the end of Babies with Guns from his followup album Bazooka Tooth, Aesop says

So no, I'll probably never write another Daylight

To you, has he surpassed the writing on that song?

[DISCUSSION] A Look Back At Women In Hip-Hop: 2010's Edition

Posted: 18 Sep 2021 06:51 AM PDT

Intro - 2010's: The Revival

After somewhat of a lack of popularity or attention for women in rap in the mid-late 2000's in comparison to the 90's and early 2000's, it seemed as if women in Hip-Hop was starting to fade out people's minds. However, the 2010's witnessed a resurgence of multiple female rappers starting to make a noteworthy amount of waves and be able to receive quite a bit of praise for their accolades or talent in the genre. In this post, I'll be talking about 11 different albums from women in rap, discussing the material on the albums as well as what kind of success (critical, commercial, virality, etc.) they received.

Side Note: While I'm not necessarily a fan of each and every single artist mentioned here, I wanted to put some of my personal bias aside so that I could highlight more artists that received some noteworthy attention.

Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday (2010)

\"Understand that I'm fighting for the girls that never thought they could win\"

With eyes on Nicki Minaj continuing to grow in the late 2000's with her mixtapes and high-profile features, fans would anticipate the release of her major label debut album. After her third mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty and before accusing the COVID-19 vaccine of giving people swollen testicles to detract from a lawsuit, The rapper would reach the apex of her popularity after dropping Pink Friday, bringing female rappers back to the forefront of people's minds after finding an immense amount of commercial success.

Pink Friday is mainly a blend of Pop-Rap, Dance-Pop, and Contemporary R&B. The album peaked at the top spot on the Billboard 200 and was nominated the Grammy for Best Rap Album, making Nicki the first female rapper to be nominated for this category since Missy Elliott's Under Construction in 2002. This LP features the biggest songs in her discography such as Super Bass, Your Love, and Moment 4 Life. Nicki includes multiple well-known features on this record such as Eminem, Kanye West, Drake, Rihanna & Natasha Bedingfield. Aside from the commercially successful pop rap singles on the album, there are also a few standout "deep cuts", two of them being Here I Am and Roman's Revenge. Here I Am has Nicki using a double entendre of sorts, comparing an unhealthy relationship to her transition into stardom in the public eye. Roman's Revenge is a diss track aimed at Lil' Kim as part of an at-the-time feud, with critics and fans alike often regarding this song as a showcase as some of Nicki Minaj's best rapping skills to date for its animated flow, aggressiveness, and eccentricity throughout. The album, along with its performances and visuals, propelled Nicki further into the spotlight with numbers that were able to rival most pop stars at the time. While much of Pink Friday is considered dated by many to due to its then-contemporary Pop Rap sound that was rather popular in the early 2010's, much of the material continues to be referenced in current pop culture - from artists such as Latto, Stefflon Don, and Ms Banks citing the record as an inspiration or influence to their careers along with much of the visuals and sound being replicated by several other female rappers that would arrive after Nicki.

Iggy Azalea - The New Classic (2014)

\"People got a lot to say, but don't know shit about where I was made\"

Australian Rapper Amethyst Kelly - known professionally as Iggy Azalea - started pursuing a music career as a teenager, self-releasing several mixtapes and EP's before being signed onto a major label; she started gaining traction over a few viral music videos on YouTube. Despite controversy for some past social media posts as well as accusations of not respecting parts of hip-hop culture, she still gained some notoriety and mainstream attention with the release of her major label debut album, The New Classic.

Iggy's debut album peaked #3 on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, making it the highest charting album in the US by a non-American female rapper. This record was also nominated for Best Rap Album for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. The New Classic is a Pop Rap album with musical elements mainly from Electronic and Dance-Pop. The album rollout officially kicked off with the release of her commercial debut single Work. Claimed by Iggy has her most personal track, this trap-influenced song details Iggy's come up as a rapper and the effort she had to use to get notoriety while also referencing her Australian background. Although the song has been questioned for its alleged lack of authenticity, it ended up receiving majority positive reviews from critics and peaked at #7 on the US Top Rap Songs. The two biggest songs on the album are the singles Black Widow and Fancy, the latter of those being Iggy's most popular song in her discography; the boastful pop rap song stayed at #1 on the Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks and received a Grammy nomination for Record Of The Year. Black Widow also gained a great amount of commercial success, peaking at #3 on the Hot 100 and topping several Hip-Hop song charts. For better or for worse, The New Classic made Iggy Azalea one of the more commercially relevant female rappers of the early-mid 2010's and is arguably the first major example of a solo white female rapper receiving a rather noteworthy amount of commercial success.

Azealia Banks - Broke With Expensive Taste (2014)

\"Hold this, chocolate and focused. Know this, vocal and chosen\"

Azealia Banks is one of the more controversial female rap figures in recent history for the many rants and fights that Azealia has put herself in against her peers as well as her many other infamous acts on social media. Music fans tend to throw in the polarizing act of "separating the art from the artist" when it comes to listening to her discography, specifically her debut album Broke With Expensive Taste.

Azealia's debut album peaked at #30 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The record uses a myriad of different producers, such as Ariel Pink, Machinedrum, MJ Cole, Araabmuzik, and many others. Taking inspiration from past music acts such as Missy Elliott and Technotronic, the album's main sounds include musical elements from Hip-Hop, House, and Dance-Pop. Azealia first started garnering attention in the music industry with the track first released from this project being 212. This Hip-House single is her most successful song to date, as it reached the top 20 on multiple international charts and became certified Platinum in the UK. 212 was featured on many year-end lists, including Pitchfork who deemed it the sixth best song of 2011. One of the more ambitious songs on the album is the track Yung Rapunxel, which takes influence from industrial music and is reminiscent of electronic music group The Prodigy. The song features these loud and abrasive screams during the hook to showcase her unbridled emotions throughout. Another standout song is the track Gimme A Chance, which samples Enon's Knock That Door. The song then switches up near the end, having a more latin-influenced sound with live instrumentation where Azealia starts singing and rapping in Spanish. The album received majority positive reviews from critics, many complimenting her for much of the musical risks she took as well as her blend of Hip-Hop and House music. A number of musical publications also commended the visuals for the material on the record, namely the videos for Ice Princess and Chasing Time. The acclaim that Broke With Expensive Taste received leave people wondering if Azealia Banks' career would have continued growing had she let someone else manage her social media.

Noname - Telefone (2016)

\"Opportunity knocking, it's finally time to answer. The doorbell was only broken cause auntie was fighting cancer\"

Chicago artist Fatimah Nyeema Warner - known professionally as Noname - started out in the early 2010's, gaining traction and popularity when she was featured on Chance The Rapper's mixtapes Acid Rap and Coloring Book. She has often credited musicians such as Nina Simone and Missy Elliott along with writers Toni Morrison and Patricia Smith for her musical and writing style. Later on, the artist released her debut music project Telefone, garnering attention from critics and Hip-Hop fans in general.

Featuring production from Monte Booker and SABA, Noname's mixtape Telefone borrows musical elements from Jazz Rap, Neo-Soul, and Conscious Hip-Hop. One way that the musician differs from her contemporaries is for the cadence and tone in her music. For much of this project, Noname blurs the lines between rap and traditional poetry for a unique and soft-spoken delivery so that her personal storytelling can shine through more. While her delivery is not as hard-hitting or in-your-face as the average rapper, her style of rapping, subject matter, and accompanied calm production all come together to complement each other rather well. Take the opening track Yesterday for example, where Noname feels unsatisfied with fame and fortune, reflecting on the pleasant memories with her grandmother (along with other past events in her life) before her passing so that she can picture and mirror her happiness. The opener is followed up by the song Sunny Duet where Noname showcases the sweetness and passion in her lyrics by discussing her romantic fantasies and hopes with the person she feels enamored with. Although Noname's voice as well as the production used for many of the tracks tend to be calming and smooth, she also tends to rap about heavier topics, such as her past drug and alcohol usage on the song All I Need or voicing her regret of aborting her would-be child on Bye Bye Baby. Another standout track is the more lyrically compact song Reality Check that has Noname rapping about the obstacles and fears that she has had to overcome as well as the opportunities in her career she was not able to previously take. All in all, Telefone is a nice introduction to Noname as an intimate lyricist and unique rapper in an age of combative and bombastic Hip-Hop.

Rapsody - Laila's Wisdom (2017)

\"With every stone you threw, I picked it up and built a powerhouse\"

North Carolina musician Marlanna Evans - known by her stage name Rapsody - started her career in the late 2000's, releasing a handful of mixtapes and projects during the first half of the 2010's. Much of her early music output was mostly overlooked until she made a guest appearance on Kendrick Lamar's album To Pimp A Butterfly. Following her highly acclaimed feature on the record, she would later release her breakthrough project and first album under Jay-Z's Roc Nation label, Laila's Wisdom, named after her grandmother Laila Ray.

Rapsody's sophomore album Laila's Wisdom peaked at #125 on the Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. With the majority of the project being produced by 9th Wonder and Khrysis, the record uses musical elements from Jazz Rap, Soul, Funk, Boom Bap, and Conscious Hip-Hop. A number of high profile Hip-Hop artists - both old and new - are included as guest appearances on Laila's Wisdom, such as J. Cole, Busta Rhymes, Black Thought, Anderson .Paak, and several others, each one contributing to the context of the project. The album is a rather broad body of work, as Rapsody speaks on a multitude of different topics, whether it is her telling a story about an unhealthy relationship where two people attempt to take advantage of each other to have what they desire on Pay Up or on Power, where Rapsody and her collaborators speak on the significance and meaning of power as well as the different types of power in society and culture. The closing track Jesus Coming - another storytelling song - is one of the heavier tracks on the record as it speaks on victims of street violence, later on rapping from the perspective of a child who was brought in the altercation and says their last moments before their death. The album was released to universal critical acclaim, with music publications commending the record for her storytelling, subject matter, and deeming it as Rapsody's best work at the time it was released. Due to what Laila's Wisdom was able to bring to the table for Hip-Hop, Rapsody is able to transcend to a higher point in her career where Hip-Hop fans can respect and appreciate the artistry of the rapper without having to separate her from her male contemporaries.

Cardi B - Invasion Of Privacy (2018)

\"Ain't no runnin' up on me, went from nothin' to glory\"

Belcalis Almánzar - known professionally as Cardi B - initially became known as an internet personality for her viral quotes as well as being on the television series Love & Hip Hop: New York, where she often expressed her past of being a stripper. Before succeeding in the mainstream, she also had released some mixtapes that were often dismissed. Because of all of this being widely known and public knowledge, it only shocked people even more when she blew up as a popular rap figure in the late 2010's with the release of her major label debut album, Invasion Of Privacy.

Invasion Of Privacy - a mainly Pop Rap album with elements of Trap and East Coast Hip-Hop - debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200, becoming the first debut rap album by a woman to do so since Eve's debut album in 1999. This LP also infamously won the Grammy for Best Rap Album, making her the first solo female rapper to win this award. The rollout started with the release of her official debut single, Bodak Yellow. Interpolating a Kodak Black song titled No Flockin', this trap rap song has Cardi bringing up her past as a stripper and how her large amount of work ethic has led her to mainstream success. This track is Cardi's biggest song to date as it led to her having a massive amount of popularity and traction; the track reached #1 on the Hot 100, becoming the first solo song by a female rapper to reach the top spot since Lauryn Hill's Doo Wop (That Thing) in 1998. It was also certified Diamond, becoming the first solo song by a female rapper to go Diamond. Additionally, the video associated with the song is currently the fastest solo female rap video to reach one billion views on YouTube. However, the success didn't stop there, as the other smash hit on the album I Like It also peaked at the top spot on the Hot 100 and was Grammy nominated for Record Of The Year. The album itself was released to widespread acclaim from mainstream critics, with many complimenting Cardi for her charisma and confidence on many of the tracks while simultaneously complimenting her vulnerability on songs such as Thru Your Phone and Ring. The massive commercial and critical success that Invasion Of Privacy received helped popularize the "rags to riches" story for women in Hip-Hop and that other women similar to how she started can achieve success.

Tierra Whack - Whack World (2018)

\"Probably would've blew overnight if I was white, rap with a mic, and wore really baggy tights\"

During the the mid-late 2010, Philadelphia rapper Tierra Whack built a name for herself in Hip-Hop circles for her number of online freestyles, receiving recognition from other acts in Hip-Hop such as A$AP Rocky and Flying Lotus. She is also one of the three women that has been featured as part of the 2019 XXL Freshman Class (the two others being Rico Nasty and Megan Thee Stallion). While Tierra's releases have mostly been rather scarce, releasing plenty of one-off singles rather than full-length projects, much of her material as been praised by critics and Hip-Hop fans alike. A showcase of some of the artist's material is seen on her debut album Whack World.

Whack World is a 15-minute audiovisual album with each track lasting about one minute. Produced almost entirely by Kenete Simms and Nick Verruto, this project takes influences from several different sounds, such as alternative R&B, Trap, East Coast Hip-Hop, and much more to make a unique and interesting blend of music. Although the project doesn't leave much room for each track, Tierra raps and sings about a variety of topics on this album, from optimism, pursuit to success, excess of riches, death, desperation, and more all in 15 minutes. The visuals that are associated with the audio allow for a double meaning of sorts to occur for each track, each song receiving its own set of visuals. Listeners have compared this album to much of Missy Elliott's material, not only because Tierra has cited Missy as one of her biggest inspirations, but also because both artists are recognized for their genre-bending, distinct sound as well as creative and out-of-the-box visuals. Whack World ended up receiving majority positive reviews from critics, being featured on multiple year-end lists from Billboard, Pitchfork, NPR Music, and more. Overall, Whack World is a project that formerly introduces Tierra as arguably one of the most eccentric and creative newer artists in recent music history, regardless of the genre.

Rico Nasty - Nasty (2018)

\"I don't do shit for a reaction, want action, I'm snappin'\"

As a teenager, rapper Maria Kelly - known by her stage name Rico Nasty - self-released a number of mixtapes and singles during the mid-2010's, garnering attention from SoundCloud Hip-Hop circles until being signed to Atlantic Records in 2018. Shortly afterwards, Rico would make more waves with the release of her breakthrough mixtape and major-label debut project, Nasty.

Nasty uses musical influences mainly from Trap, Pop Rap, and Hardcore Hip-Hop throughout. For multiple songs, Rico delivers her verses using a raspy and animated voice while riding on heavy and abrasive trap beats. With the most captivating moments of the mixtape, Rico uses her ability to deliver explosive, in-your-face performances and self-assertive lines. Many of the songs are relatively short, but still give her time to shine when needed. Two of the singles leading up to the release of the album are known as Trust Issues and Rage, both songs produced by Kenny Beats. Using influence from Nu-Metal and Rap Rock, these teasers are able to showcase her aggressive, yet confident persona that she often uses in her material. The latter of those songs Rage is one of her overall more intense and braggadocious songs as Rico lashes out on those who test her patience, whether it is by comparisons to other artists or attempting to mimic her style. The brash track Ice Cream is another highlight, a song that starts off using a sample an ice cream truck sample, comparing the way she attracts men to the way an actual ice cream truck attracts people with a sweet tooth. Later down the project, Rico then tries to vary her sound with the melodic rap song Won't Change which in contrast to the previous hard-hitting bangers contains smoother, more mellow production along with Rico using a cleaner vocal style. Overall, Nasty was released to generally positive reviews from critics and contains highlights that show her to be one of the more at-the-time intriguing and interesting rap voices in her respective field.

Little Simz - GREY Area (2019)

\"Never givin' credit where it's due 'cause you don't like pussy in power\"

UK Independent artist Little Simz started her career as a rapper in the late 2000's, releasing multiple mixtapes and EP's during the early-mid 2010's under her own label. She started gaining some notoriety among critics and Hip-Hop circles after releasing her official debut album in 2015. She has also caught the attention of high-profile artists in Hip-Hop, such as Kendrick Lamar and Ms. Lauryn Hill. Nearly four years later, Little Simz showcases some of the best of her ability as a rapper with the release of her third studio album, GREY Area.

GREY Area peaked at #11 on the UK Independent Albums Chart and was nominated for IMPALA's (Independent Music Publishers and Labels Association) European Independent Album of the Year Award. Produced mostly by Dean "Inflo" Wynton, this project is a UK Hip-Hop album with elements of Hardcore Hip-Hop and Jazz Rap. The record starts off with the hard-hitting, opening track Offence. Featuring heavy drums and dense instrumentation, Simz confidently flexes her lyrical ability while declaring that it is not to her concern on who she offends with her voice and words. The track is followed up by the even more intense track Boss, a funky and aggressive song where Little Simz showcases her in-your-face type of attitude, asserting her position for her skill and ability. The album later mellows on the hard hitting songs, with the following songs Wounds and Selfish, tracks that respectively speak about desire/attraction and cautions the act of crimes and the dangers that may be associated with such a lifestyle. The energy picks up with the following, fast-flowing track Venom, where Little Simz denounces those who may ignore her ability as an artist for her gender and concurrently references her own mental struggles and health. Another standout on the album is the sonically melancholic and aptly titled song Pressure, where Simz touches on myriad of topics that she feels bombarded and pressured by in real life, from the Black Experience or the weight on her shoulders to succeed. The project later closes off with Flowers, where Simz shows her hope for wanting to leave a mark of sorts in the music industry before her death. Overall, GREY Area is a solid example of lyrical and technical ability in Hip-Hop for both female rappers and UK Rap.

Megan Thee Stallion - Fever (2019)

\"Damn, I want some head, but I chose the dough instead\"

Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion started her music career in the early 2010's, uploading freestyles online, gradually building up her fanbase and gaining a larger social media. After self-releasing a number of mixtapes and singles, she would later get a record deal with 1501 Certified Entertainment in 2018 as well as being signed to Warner Brothers. Afterwards, Megan would come to release her commercial debut mixtape, Fever, marking her breakthrough in the mainstream.

Fever peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200 and #6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums; the aesthetic of the album artwork takes inspiration from 70's blaxploitation films. With production mostly from Max Julian AKA LilJuMadeDaBeat, the project uses musical elements from Trap as well as Hardcore and Southern Hip-Hop. For Fever, Megan takes inspiration from multiple different styles and artists. For one, the project uses the main themes of obtaining riches while simultaneously taking control of her sexuality and femininity by switching the roles in a relationship, similar to past women in Hip-Hop such as Gangsta Boo and Lil' Kim. Not only that, but the hard-hitting and confident delivery that she uses for many songs on the record is reminiscent of members of Hip-Hop group Three 6 Mafia, with the comparisons being more apparent due to the multiple references and samples of the group throughout Fever. Much of the material of the record has Megan asserting the power she has in terms of her sex drive and ability to take control of the men around the rapper with her sex appeal to give her what she desires; such topics are highlighted on the biggest song on the project Cash Shit, which peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs. The mixtape then ends with what made her gain traction in the first place, that being her freestyles. Running Up Freestyle is filled with nothing but charisma, hard-hitting delivery, and quick flows and allows Megan to address her spectators. The mixtape was released to general acclaim from mainstream critics and was included on several Hip-Hop year-end lists. All in all, the most attention-grabbing parts of Fever showcase Megan Thee Stallion as a bold figure in Hip-Hop thanks to her use of sex appeal and straightforward, smooth flows.

Doja Cat - Hot Pink (2019)

\"Like it, love it, need it bad. Take it, own it, steal it fast\"

California artist Doja Cat started out on SoundCloud, uploading a few songs on the website until later being signed to RCA Records. Although her debut EP and album Amala (named after Doja's real name) under the label had a lack of commercial success, she later gained a notable amount of attention after the release of her song Mooo!, which gained viral success as a meme on social media. Following the somewhat accidental success of Mooo!, Doja Cat released her sophomore album and breakthrough project Hot Pink.

Hot Pink peaked at #9 on the Billboard 200 and #8 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. With the main themes being about pride, relationships, and sexuality, the record takes influence from several sounds, the main genres being Pop Rap, Synth-Pop, Trap, and Contemporary R&B. Before the official rollout of the album, Doja Cat released a deluxe edition of Amala, some of the bonus tracks being the viral song Mooo! and the song Juicy, the latter of those two tracks finding a notable amount of popularity with listeners. Due to its popularity, a remix to the song featuring Tyga was released as the lead single to her sophomore album and also serves as the album closer, peaking at #18 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Another single that was released to tease the album's release was Bottom Bitch. Sampling Blink-182's What's My Name Again? Doja dives into the world of Pop Punk and Emo-Trap while comparing a relationship to a woman she's with to that of a pimp and a hoe, asserting her control and dominance in the relationship. The most popular track on the album is the Disco-Pop single Say So, which features both her flirtatious singing as well as unique cadence as a rapper. Partially due to gaining virality on TikTok, the song received massive success as it is her biggest song to date. Both the video and song were featured on multiple year-end lists and were nominated for multiple awards, including a Grammy nomination for Record Of The Year. The song peaked at #2 on the Hot 100, with a remix of the track featuring Nicki Minaj propelling the song to the top spot, thus making Say So both artists' first #1 on the Hot 100. While initially being seen mostly as a meme due to her accidental viral hit, Hot Pink built a more substantial following for Doja Cat in the world of Pop Rap as it shot her into mainstream status.
