My latest project "See You Next Wednesday" just dropped and I wanted to stop by Reddit and answer any questions you may have about it. This album is a very special project for me, and my latest release in 3 years. Some of the artists I collaborated with for SYNW are The Weeknd, Nas, Young Thug, Nav, Moneybag Yo, Gunna, Big Sean and Lil Uzi among others. The visuals for this album are insane. You can head over to my youtube to check them out. The latest two videos are Die For it ft. The Weeknd and Nas and Better Believe ft. The Weeknd and Young Thug. I'm Palestinian born and Canadian raised, and I've been lucky enough to work with the best of the best in music. I'm excited to this with ya'll so let's get into it! Ask Me Anything.

Masked Wolf’s Debut Mixtape Is An ‘Astronomical’ Failure - Mixtape Review

Posted: 10 Sep 2021 09:10 PM PDT

Masked Wolf is your favourite rapper's biggest fan. He might not outwardly admit it, but he needn't do so. The evidence is in the music, which is more often than not a coursing stream of crass stereotypes that swells and swells until originality is hard to come by. Even his claim to fame is becoming less and less of an oddity. The Australian rapper rose to prominence through TikTok exposure with the dated 'Astronaut In The Ocean', a song that obediently followed Eminem's law of syllables over substance and made even more of a mess of several of Kid Cudi's modus operandi. Still, Wolf can't be mistaken for them, he doesn't have the chops or the charisma, but that doesn't stop him from trying to fool you. Be warned: every single song, shtick, and sound on 'Astronomical', the rapper's debut mixtape, comes from someone else's legacy, and it impedes on Masked Wolf's, who isn't entirely deserving of one.

The songs here are translucent, stripped of anything that'd give any credence to Masked Wolf's whirlwind success. He refuses to soften the plagiarism because he can't, without the scaffolding, there would be nothing. 'Astronomical', for example, recalls the scintillating synth work of a Kid Cudi song if Mike Dean had an off day. Elsewhere, the delayed staccato hook of 'Just Names' bites the deranged mayhem of J.I.D's 'NEVER'. The following verses suggest it's a level of thrill Wolf cannot maintain for long. 'Gravity Glidin', on the other hand, is as vacant as the worst of Drake's 'Certified Lover Boy' whereas 'Reflections' recalls the sparse features of 'Nothing Was The Same' without the stoney, self-dissection to compliment it. But all these tributes pale in comparison to the infatuation Wolf reserves for Eminem. There is no place safe from Wolf's overly verbose tongue twisters, not even 'Work', which crams the gory gusto of a 'Kamikaze' song in between wolf-like howls, yes, really.

Performance isn't Masked Wolf's only Achilles heel either. The guy also happens to handle words the same way you might treat a rotten corpse. After all, the prose has been assembled on the same conveyor belt that hurled 'Astronaut In The Ocean', a vague nod to mental health that gets completely lost in its own contradictions, into the world. Through all of his appropriation, Wolf has the audacity to belittle materialism on 'Say So', "Why you worried 'bout the clothes with the labels?", he exclaims with the enthusiasm of a personal trainer. Without the satire that Macklemore wielded to make the same observations a decade ago, Wolf sounds more insecure than the group he's making fun of. Such is usually the case on 'Astronomical' however, namely due to the Drake-isms abound in the rapper's vernacular. On 'Where's Wally' & 'Ain't Gonna Change', Wolf outlines his own 'Started From the Bottom' arc, only to end up fretting about the consequences of being one of the biggest rappers in the world as if it were a chore. These are, by all accounts, nuanced topics that have since been wrapped in the fickle skin Wolf dons for trivialization purposes.

Everything here has. Coated in stasis, 'Astronomical' excels at disappointing by delivering exactly what you expect from it. Across 17 tracks, Wolf never seems to catch onto the fact that the audience is laughing at him, not with him. At least, it's the only possible explanation for a song as self-indulgent as 'Razor's Edge' being here. But still, Wolf pursues, not because he's expected to, but because he's already branded himself as a seminal voice. He mulls about this with a sovereign ego on 'Pandamonium', "They treatin' a veteran like he a rookie", he brashly chants in the rush of Imagine Dragons-styled riffs. He pushes past the point of delusion without ever being told 'no', and it's not fun for anyone. The only one who emerges unscathed from the supreme faults of 'Astronomical' is Kevin Gates who cruises atop nimble synths with a still swagger on 'Thief In The Night'. He is the seasoned, docile role model that Masked Wolf needed sooner, and the only reason to tune in to 'Astronomical'.

Masked Wolf is reaping the benefits of the past decade of hip-hop as a present-day stooge that has little chance of being remembered as much more than a blip in the future. When he isn't posing like goliaths to receive their approval as a sibling would to their senior family member, his efforts rival the weariness of one who has already conquered all and tasted envy-inviting prizes. For them, the result of 'Astronomical', one last effort before capping a glorious career, would not matter. Wolf, on the other hand, is just getting started, and he's already out of ideas.

Astronomical - Masked Wolf - 2/10
