My experience at the Fugees reunion show [Concert Review] Posted: 23 Sep 2021 11:09 AM PDT I was one of the lucky few who managed to snag tickets to the Fugees pop-up reunion show in NYC last night - their first show together in 15 years and the "soft launch" of their first worldwide tour in over two decades. The "secret location" in the tour announcement was Pier 17 - on a rooftop overlooking the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a beautiful venue on a beautiful night! You had to enter to get tickets through Global Citizen - a charity org that is staging a worldwide concert broadcast on Saturday for which this show was filmed for (Global Citizen Live). They're also sponsoring the reunion tour. Got an email the morning of saying that I could claim my tickets - I believe there were about 3,000 people chosen in total. I showed up at 5:30 since the tickets said doors were at 6pm. About 20 minutes after I got in line they began the soundcheck and you could hear it from the street. We could hear Lauryn singing so we knew that at least she showed up! They didn't end up letting people into the venue until around 6:30pm - standard security, however they made everyone lock their phones in Yondr cases (the same stuff that Chappelle uses). Made it to the stage a little before 7pm I think (my sense of time was warped b/c I didn't have my phone nor a watch). What happens next is a 3 1/2 hour saga of waiting: [7pm]: the time the show was originally supposed to start. They're still doing sound and lighting checks (there's TV equipment everywhere and an enormous band setup). [8:30pm]: At this point I'm at the venue for 3 hours. Lauryn Hill's DJ starts to play. [9:30pm]: The DJ is still playing, at this point any attempt to get the crowd hype are falling flat. People start to get antsy. [around 10pm]: It's now 3 hours since the show was supposed to start. But the impossible does happen!!! The band was at least a dozen or so deep. A huge horn section, backup singers, keyboardists, guitar, everything. They start warming up and playing intro music. Then all of sudden you see Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras together, on the same stage, right in front of you, bursting into "The Score." The energy was THERE!!!! The chemistry seemed authentic and the crowd ate it up despite being pretty fckin tired from all of the standing. They ended up playing for about 40-45 minutes and their setlist was pretty short. But they went into all of their hits - Fu Gee La, Ready or Not, Killing Me Softly!!!!! Lauryn gave a speech about how touring and recording from a young age had caused her to take a hiatus after Miseducation and said that the Fugees had a complicated history. But she called the reunion a miracle and seemed to genuinely be enjoying the moment (aside from yelling at her band every 30 seconds). Wyclef gave a speech about the Haitian migrant crisis at the border and freestyled. Aaaaaand after 45 minutes and 6 or so songs they were done! Closed out with "No Woman No Cry." People were either chanting for an encore or rushed to the exit to have their phone pouches unlocked. For me this was totally worth the experience, honestly the late start was very on-brand considering it's the Fugees. So keep that in mind if you want to get tickets to the reunion tour. No matter how long this actually lasts it was an incredible moment in time! Here's a really good Rolling Stone write-up: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-live-reviews/fugees-reunion-new-york-1231120/ And some awesome HQ videos (not mine):
EDIT: Appreciate the love! It really was a once in a lifetime experience... but it was free at the end of the day. Idk if y'all wanna be paying hundreds of dollars to potentially be waiting a looooong time. Maybe the $$ involved and the fact that they're working with a charity (Global Citizen) will keep them to their commitments. A few other random things b/c why not!
