[ANNOUNCEMENT] The first ever r/HipHopHeads Rate is on its way!

Posted: 07 Sep 2021 10:02 AM PDT

Hi folks! So as some of you might be aware, /r/popheads and /r/indieheads hold monthly/semi-monthly competitions called Rates - in them, the sub's users get to listen to a few albums and assign scores to and comment on each song from each album. Those scores are then tallied, and over a weekend, each song is revealed one by one until a winner is crowned. Here are a few recent examples:

If you'd like to see more, a full list of each sub's Rate histories can be found here for indieheads and here for popheads

So what does this mean for r/hiphopheads? Well, as I'm sure you probably could've guessed, we'd like to (finally) get rates going on HHH. As a mod team, we'd like to gauge y'all's interest before proceeding, because this will hopefully be something we keep going for the foreseeable future rather than just being a one-off thing.

Linked at the end of this post will be a Google Form in which you can indicate your interest in participating in or hosting a rate, as well as provide any suggestions as to what our first rate should be. When providing a suggestion, please keep the following in mind (but it's not 100% required, just recommended):

  • The albums should have some sort of unifying theme (region, release year(s), subgenre, etc)

  • The albums should be popular enough that the average HHH user can rate the songs easily after one or two relistens, but also accessible enough that anyone just popping in from a neighboring subreddit can easily get a grasp on the albums if they wanna participate (the Overposted and Essentials lists are good references for this)

  • Across 3 or 4 albums, having about 60 total songs is the sweet spot for the reveal threads (20 songs revealed on Friday, 20 on Saturday, 20 on Sunday)

  • You want to rate albums that people are gonna love and really have fun with. Obviously, if they're albums that everyone here loves and knows well, there will be more participants and the atmosphere will rock. So, at least to start off, think of the bigger and more popular artists.

The Google Form can be found here.

After about a week or so, or until we have a good sense of the interest and a good sample of possible rates, we'll come back here with the results and look to you guys to choose which set of albums we'll rate first. If you guys have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, comment them here and I'll do my best to address them. I really hope this goes well and I really hope you all enjoy it!

Sincerely yours,

The HipHopHeads Moderators
