[DISCUSSION] Frank Ocean - Endless (Five Years Later)

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 09:00 PM PDT

Five Years Ago, Endless a visual album by Frank Ocean. It was released on August 19, 2016, as a exclusive streating-only video on Apple Music, and preceded the August 20 release of Ocean's second studio album Blonde. Endless was later remastered and had a limited reissue in physical audio and visual formats on April 10, 2018.

The album followed a period of controversy for Ocean, who was in a highly publicized battle with Def Jam Recordings, and it was the subject of widespread media discussion upon release. Endless was recorded in various studios across California, as well as in London, Miami, and Berlin, with production handled primarily by Ocean, Vegyn, Michael Uzowuru, and Troy Noka; Ocean previously collaborated with Noka on his debut mixtape, Nostalgia Ultra.

The film follows Ocean silently woodworking on a staircase while the audio plays. Music journalists have noted the album features a minimalist aesthetic with a loose musical structure and contains similar elements featured on Blonde, including ambient pop, avant- soul ,R&B, and trap. Thematically, Endless explores Ocean's status as a celebrity, love and heartbreak, and age. It also contains uncredited guest appearances from Sampha and Jazmine Sullivan.

Endless received generally positive reception, with critics praising the musical content, namely its abstract structural compositions, although some were divided over the visual aspects, noting its length. Upon its re-release, it was positively reassessed, with praise directed toward its variety.

In January 2019, during an interview with iconic radio DJ Angie Martinez, Asap Rocky first told the now-infamous story of how Frank Ocean was able to become an independent artist.

ASAP Rocky said "He had a deal and he didn't put out an album for four years," Rocky explained. "With his deal, he literally figured out how to get $20 million from Lucian Grainge, drop his deal, figure out how to make the funds apply to another album, give them a bullshit album, get out his deal all in one round. Do you know how embarrassed the record industry was? ... That man figured out how to finesse the record industry and people don't talk about that."

Ocean first signed to Def Jam in 2011 ahead of his classic debut album Channel Orange. After its success Ocean took an unexpected hiatus before returning in 2016 with the visual album Endlessand the traditional album Blonde. Endless fulfilled his contractual obligation to Def Jam, allowing him to release Blonde on his own indie label just one day later. This confused music fans including Rocky, who Ocean said accidentally missed key points when recounting the chain of events to Martinez.

In Gayletter's interview Frank said "It's funny you bring up Rocky, because after that came out, I was like, 'Rocky, I think we gotta review the CliffsNotes of that situation because you got a couple parts a little fucked up,'" Ocean said to Gayletter. Although he didn't go into detail on where Rocky misspoke he did admit that he can't offer any advice on how to duplicate his method because the record industry has now caught on.

"There was certainly noise within the industry about it, like Universal saying no more exclusives could happen afterwards," Ocean considered. "So I was being asked about it, and I didn't really talk about it too much with people. But with Rocky, we spoke about it. I think with advice, that situation probably won't ever happen again in the same way, so I don't know if my advice would be any good as far as how to do it again."

Overall, what's your thoughts on Endless & where do you place it in Frank's discrography ?

[DISCUSSION] Lil B - I'm Gay (I'm Happy) | (10 years later)

Posted: 18 Aug 2021 11:06 AM PDT

Never saw a thread for this. I'm Gay (I'm Happy) is Lil B's fifth studio album, surprise dropped without notice on June 29, 2011. The next day, Lil B gave posted free download links to the album on his Twitter and Facebook, and the album entered at No.56 on Billboard's Hip-Hop/Rap chart upon release.

Upon release, critical reception was positive. Pitchfork gave it an 8.1, Anthony Fantano infamously gave the album a 20 minute review that was also positive. Looking back, this is probably the most well-received Lil B album and rightfully so, as it is likely his most concise and cohesive record to date.

The main draw of this album to me is the positive and uplifting attitude that Lil B maintains throughout the album paired with the great samples and production. Lil B is not a good rapper and hes not really trying to be. The lyrics are shallow and often laughably dumb. But his persona is easily what draws people in and he uses that to assert a positive and wholesome message, and that alone resonates with a lot of people. The terrible flows, surface level lyrics, and monotone delivery is all secondary to the Lil B persona and the overall message & attitude that he is asserting here.

Ten years later, there's definitely something to be said about the legacy and influence of Lil B in general, and I'm Gay (I'm Happy) is a good point at which to reflect. While he wasnt the first rapper to blow up via the internet, Lil B emerged at the precipice of modern social media and showed people that it's based as fuck to just be yourself. He was one of the first rappers to take full advantage of the internet to spread his music, posting DIY music videos on YouTube and posting his music for free on Twitter as well as constantly interacting with his fanbase. This album was crucial in that rise to fame and helped establish the Lil B name and persona.

Here are some noteworthy rappers who have offered praise to Lil B:

Denzel Curry: "Lil B made that platform for a lot of people... you could do whatever you want without being judged."

Chief Keef: My nigga based God..... This shit ain't for anybody and He reached out to me back in 2011 so u kno what's real doog!

Kendrick Lamar: Thank you BasedGod. Teaching us all how to swagg in videos. You and Wayne most influential. Thank you BasedGod.

Metro Boomin': Lil B is responsible for a lot of careers man. A true hip hop pioneer.

There are way more that I'm too lazy to post, and this post is way too long already. Discuss. Thank You Based God.
