If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

What bar goes so much harder when you learn the full context?

What's a line that didn't make a ton of sense on your first listen, but when you learned the context became one of your favorite lines of a song?

[DISCUSSION] Danny Brown - XXX: 10 Years Anniversary

Posted: 14 Aug 2021 07:29 PM PDT

Danny Brown's legendary mixtape was released 10 years ago on August 15th, 2011. This was my introduction to Danny, and is my 2nd favorite album by him. 30 is one of my all time favorite verses and performance in hip hop.

From Wikipedia:

XXX (pronounced "triple x" or "30") is the second studio album by American rapper Danny Brown. It was released on August 15, 2011, by Fool's Gold Records. The album's production was handled by Frank Dukes, Brandun DeShay, Skywlkr, Nick Speed, Quelle, Paul White, Squadda Bambino and DJ House Shoes. The album's only guest appearances come from Brown's Bruiser Brigade cohorts Chips and Dopehead.

Discussion questions:

  • What are your favorite and least favorite things on the album?

  • Did it have any impact on you on a personal level?

  • How do you think it held up after 10 years?

  • Is this your favorite work by Danny Brown?

Of course, these are just simple questions to encourage discussion. More in-depth discussion is always welcomed!

What is that single word that a rapper uses so much you can read it in his/her voice? (I'll start)

Q-Tip: "abstract"

EDIT: It might be too late, but as someone pointed out: I'm not talking about ad-libs. It would be too easy to think about ad-libs. I'm asking about normal words, like someone commented recently: Tupac, "enemies". Aye I could hear that

DISCUSSION: How much does replay value matter to you when deciding your favorite albums of the year (or even of all-time)?

Posted: 14 Aug 2021 03:35 PM PDT

In other words, does it make sense to hear an album only once or a handful of times & consider it a favorite, or does "favorite" automatically imply that you want to listen to it over & over again?

If you listen to something like Barter 6 by Young Thug hundreds of times, but only want to listen to something like Drogas Wave by Lupe Fiasco once in a while because of its length and density, does that mean Barter 6 is more of a favorite?

Another thing, if you love & play an album so much after you initially discover it or after it's first released, to the point where you don't have much of a desire to play it anymore, would you still consider that a favorite album? Can you get sick of one of your favorite albums?
