I’m Congressman Jamaal Bowman, representative from NY-16, Hip Hop head, and original co-sponsor of the Hip Hop Resolution. AMA

Posted: 11 Aug 2021 03:01 PM PDT

I'm a first-term congressman, disciple of the 36 chambers, and I've just introduced House Resolution 579 to designate today, August 11, 2021, as Hip Hop Celebration Day, August '21 as Hip Hop Recognition Month, and November '21 as Hip Hop History Month.

I believe that Hip Hop has been the rebirth of civilization, and I introduced this legislation to make space in our government to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions Hip Hop has made to American life and American culture. It has allowed the marginalized to build a platform that both made their voices heard across the globe and made America feel more like home. Happy to be here tonight to discuss it with you all.

You can check out Hip Hop Salute from my brother Chad Harper, Lisi G, Johnny Span-One, Zanzolo Uzwi Kanta, Rex T, Mowa Olodumare, AjGod, The Brooklyn Globetrotter, Gxnzo, and OkaiMusik.

Ask me anything!

Proof

EDIT: Thank you all for the thoughtful questions. Really appreciated speaking with you all and I even learned a few things. Please keep in touch by following me on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

[DISCUSSION] What's The Last Classic Album Released?

Posted: 11 Aug 2021 05:35 AM PDT

As time passed, the the attribute Classic lost some part of his meaning. We lived a particular era of Rap (speaking about 10's), where streaming accelarated the work of the industry and we hugged the concept of fast food music: a lot of album/mixtape released everyday forgotten after few days/weeks.

Not a problem, to me is pleasant to enjoy music like this too and we listeners are capable to recognize the quality, but we kept the memory of few products.

So, in the last 10 ten years, what's the last Classic released, in your opinion? And why?

RZA interviews Jamal Bowman for High Snobiety

Jamal Bowman on first hearing Wu-Tang | Rolling Stone

Elsewhere, Bowman recounts hitting clubs in the Bronx when he was a kid: "Maybe night clubs I shouldn't have been in as a 15, 16 year old." He heard Wu-Tang Clan for the first time on the dance floor, and Bowman's face mask donning the Staten Island group's logo would become a signature image of his campaign. "It came full circle for me," Bowman admits.

How a middle school principal used the Ocasio-Cortez playbook against a 16-term incumbent | Washington Post

Bowman, too, benefited from appealing to younger voters ready for change. Back in Yonkers, he'd switched into a more recognizable face mask. It was his signature in the home stretch of the campaign, with the bright yellow logo of his favorite hip-hop group, the Wu Tang Clan.

It's a conversation starter for anyone his age group.

"They know where I'm coming from without even saying anything," he said. "Hip-hop is the culture that raised me along with my mother."

For him, Wu Tang, who rose out of the projects in Staten Island, aren't just about the music. They're an ethos, an inspiration.

"Hip-hop is a culture that is created by teenagers who were forgotten about," he said, "and because they were forgotten about, they were forced to come together and create something beautiful."

Jamaal Bowman: 'The police literally beat the crap out of me' | Roll Call:

Even with the wind at your back, campaign life can be a drag. Bowman says his wife and staff kept him going, but also cites another source of inspiration: the Wu-Tang Clan, or at least their groundbreaking album "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)."

"I mean, '36 Chambers' was quintessential," says Bowman, an avid hip hop fan. During the primary, the candidate was photographed wearing a Wu-Tang face mask while out on the trail. The Gen X-er also keeps in rotation staples of '80s and '90s rap like Nas' "Illmatic" and albums by Rakim and KRS-One.
