Busta Rhymes rails against COVID lockdowns and masks: “No human being is supposed to tell you you can’t even breathe freely. Fuck your mask!”

Posted: 25 Aug 2021 09:47 AM PDT

The vid is here: https://twitter.com/GrantB911/status/1430008359986597890

"In the last 15 fuckin' months, COVID could suck a dick," he says in the video. "All these little weird ass government policies and mandates, suck a dick. Stop trying to take out civil liberties away. Feels good to be back outside. We outside for real. It's called the God-given right of freedom, right? No human-being supposed to tell you you can't even breathe freely. Fuck your mask

Some of y'all might feel differently, but fuck your mask. I can't rhyme to you with a mask on. We can't eat food with a fuckin' mask on. We can't even see each other smile with a mask on. Damn, yo. I come from a time where before I even used to wanna holla at a chick, I used to have to do shit with my face to let her know that I'm into her. All of that energy gets blocked when your mask is on. Energy is important and we are all conductors of fuckin' good energy

We also gotta be clear when a muthafucka trying to give you bad energy, you can tell from only the expression on their face. I wanna see your face, fuck your mask

I'm sorry, I got a little political and shit. I miss my people. We gotta talk. We can party, but we gotta talk. We gotta communicate. We gotta establish new understandings. Fuck that. I ain't going through that shit again. And make sure y'all prepare, too. If anything came out of this muthafucka, [it] was a lot of learning."

[DISCUSSION] Vince Staples - Prima Donna (5 Years Later)

Posted: 25 Aug 2021 07:43 AM PDT

Prima Donna is the second extended play by American rapper Vince Staples. It was released on August 26, 2016, by ARTium Recordings and Def Jam Recordings. The extended play features guest appearances from Kilo Kish and ASAP Rocky, while the production was handled by DJ Dahi, James Blake, John Hill and No I.D.

Release and promotion

On June 20, 2016, Vince Staples revealed on The Fader cover story interview that he would be releasing his six-song EP, called Prima Donna. On August 15, 2016, the release date was announced, along with the release of the cover art and track listing for the album. On September 1, 2016, Staples released a ten-minute short film of the same name directed by Nabil Elderkin.

Release Thread

Production credits in case you can't find em

War Ready - James Blake

Smile - DJ Dahi

Loco - DJ Dahi

Prima Donna - DJ Dahi

Pimp Hand - No ID

Big Time - James Blake

That ATLiens sample on War Ready is clean. Enjoying the project a lot on first listen. Production very different from Summertime '06 not necessarily bad.

I knew I could trust Vince on that vinyl pre-order. Gonna give it a few more spins but really liked every track on the first listen.

edit: After two more listens I'm gonna say a few things

  • DJ Dahi is a GOD

  • Throw Schoolboy on Smile and it could be a cut from Blank Face

  • Rocky still comes through with a dope contribution without a verse

  • Kilo Kish actually fit on Loco perfectly even though I really wasn't a fan of her voice or any previous work.

  • Even though its only a 6 track project my top 3 songs are Smile, Loco and Big Time

Discussion thread

Dope as per usual from Vince, I'm glad this was an EP because imo vinces songs take a while to properly click.

Upon first hearing this I didn't immediately like it; it wasn't bad, I just wasn't impressed. But by list 5 or 6, I really started liking this project. Vince displays great lyrics and he did an excellent job at carrying out the theme of this project. A lot of artists say a project is going to "tell a story" or be thematic, but they are usually just bullshitting to make it sound interesting. Vince legitimately told the story he said he would and it worked out great, and I have mad respect for that.

I was mindfucked at the end when the end of the last song was same as song 06 from his album. Because this is a reverse chronological story, that means the real beginning of this EP (the last song) picks up exactly where Summertime 06 leaves off. My theory is that since this EP is the story of a rapper rising to fame and killing himself (and Summertime 06 was the album Vince rose to fame on) that this EP is about the pitfalls of fame and might apply to Vince's life specifically. I haven't listened enough to be sure, but it kind of makes sense.

edit: my only gripe is that a lot of this production sounds like something that could have been on Summertime 06, but that's not a big deal. If anything, the similar production sounds could just lend to the idea of the two projects tying together.

took me more listens than usual to enjoy but still a solid EP, 7/10 imo. Loco is my favourite, the last two tracks slap and the production overall is great , which i expected from the crazy production credits

  • How does it hold up?
  • Favorite tracks?
  • Doesn't this feel like a transitional record between Summertime '06 and Big Fish Theory?
