A track by track review of "Indigo" by Chris Brown

Posted: 21 Aug 2019 09:18 PM PDT

I wanted to do an exhaustive review of one of the most exhaustive albums of the summer. The biggest critique on "Heartbreak on a Full Moon" was that it was far too long. CB listened and gave us a 32-track album, with only 4 hidden tracks ;) Here I will review each song for those of you not strong enough to make it through.

"Indigo": This is the title song and probably the best produced song on the album. It opens with a strong rhythmic and cyclical back beat with a slightly faded vocal motif that repeats throughout the song and is sure to stick with you long after you finish listening. CB explores some themes of spirituality and reincarnation ("Level to me baby, open my third eye"; "I'm still believing we don't die...I think I knew you in my other life"), and expresses an attraction to these qualities ("Yoga fit, Pilate body, shawty yeah"; "That's my baby, she woke"). One of the most impressive vocal performances on the album, and easily the most addictive song.

"Back to Love": this song is a decrescendo from the album opener and feels very subdued on a first listen. However, the song grows on you as an uplifting song about redemption and the power of love to encourage personal and emotional growth ("I wanna be better, you make me genuinely better"). It's sound is reminiscent of songs on "FORTUNE" and harkens back to a younger, cheekier CB.

"Come Together": one of the singles from the album and featuring H.E.R., this is probably one of the worst vocal performances on the album. The earnest verses are betrayed by a shrill chorus that is out of the vocal range for both artists. This is most evident in the ad libs towards the end of the song, where CB's vocals basically fall out of focus. Although an early radio favorite, an overall disappointment.

"Temporary Lover": Unclear why Lil Jon needed the feature here, but it's a fun club song without much more substance. Not terribly memorable but overall harmless.

"Emerald/Burgundy": The first double-track song of the album. In "Emerald", CB expresses (obviously) feelings of desire and jealousy over a girl who he can' t get, despite having ample "money and trees". He references his plan to marry the girl if possible ("Gonna put my birthstone on your ring finger") while also acknowledging that his own philandering ways may be getting in the way of his pursuits. There are features from Juvenile and Juicy J, with Juvenile having the more compelling verses ("You lookin' like a laptop; I need a lap dance"). The beat breakdown with the soaring "greeeeen" makes this a secret bop and a sharp lead-in to "Burgundy". The hidden track is the smoothest and most emotional track on the album. Again he references proposing to his lover ("You'll be the one I take my time on, ooh, might be the one to buy a diamond") and his commitment to her over other girls. Easily the longest track on the album and well worth a replay.

"Red": THE break-up song of the year. Chris explores a turbulent relationship and the threat of destruction in what I believe to be an extended shark attack metaphor ("I might swim for you....Imma just keep going round and round in circles...because a I see the color purple, don't break my heart; don't want wanna see reeeeeeeed"). The lyrics again feature soaring vocals, something we're seeing more often from CB. To top it off, Xeryus Gittens features as the guitar soloist with equally intricate riffs that give the whole song a very retro vibe. The last of the color songs on the album, you sort of appreciate how expressive CB can be when he really tries.

"All I Want": The song parades as a typical bedroom beat on the outset ("next time when you look at me, throw it back when you look at me"), but actually expresses ideas of commitment, which are uncharacteristic for CB ("I got everything I need, all I want is you. That's why a nigga still cuffin' when the season's through."). Tyga is a weak rapper in general and this song is no exception, as his forgettable verse adds nothing to the song. Overall, cute lyrics with a chill beat made for date night.

"Wobble Up": One of the breakout singles from the album, this feels on-brand for a CB banger featuring 1) Nicki Minaj (and G-Eazy, to a lesser extent), 2) inconspicuous lyrics about strippers and sex, 3) and fast backbeat that really prevents you from having a coherent thought throughout the entire song. Fun and flimsy.

"Need a Stack": Joyner Lucas opens on this homage to New Orleans bounce and brings his easy flow up a few notches with the pulsatile back beat. The song is sort of a thematic continuation of "Wobble Up" and dives deeper into the vocalists' relationships with their favorite strippers. Lil Wayne believes his favorite stripper, who has already tattooed his name on her butt, will put his name on "her face next". CB gives us his first rap on the album, featuring a politically incorrect and completely superfluous lyric about "black bitches with the nice hair". Otherwise, it's more stripping and rewards for said strippers. The speed of the verses matches the tempo of the beat and creates a really energetic and enjoyable song.

"Heat": This song comes as a bit of a shock after the energetic openers, and is a slower song that Gunna and CB use to stunt ("You liking what you see? Everything designer, that's on me.") Not terribly substantive and a bit jarring compared to the surrounding tracks.

"No Guidance": If you like Drake, you will wish he had more airtime on this song. In keeping true to his style, the song lauds an independent woman with her own means of success, in contrast to the seemingly dependent strippers from earlier in the album ("You just took it off the lot, no mileage." "Good to have you on my side, I ain't saying that you need me.") You will probably like the video more than the song in isolation.

"Girl of My Dreams": This is a bedroom song that explores intimacy and admiration of a girl who CB believes has been previously under appreciated. More in line with traditional RnB and a song that could have been on "Forever".

"Natural Disaster/Aura": ND is basically an extended metaphor comparing CB's relationship to natural natural phenomena and does it to a dancehall beat. Not a very memorable song and sort of underproduced, maybe with the understanding that it would double track from the outset. "Aura" is an ideological sequel to "Indigo" ("know you see all of the colors, how bout you level me up") and explores some of the same ideas of spirituality and sex. A much more tender take on the ideas and sort of like the "Wavy" interlude by Sza.

"Don't Check on Me": this is CB's third feature with Justin Bieber and seems like it belongs on his most recent album as it feels a lot like "Love Yourself". It's a song about breaking up and cutting ties, and Ink's vocals show how these feelings can be experienced by both males and females. The lyrics are compassionate, pained, and tender.

"Sorry Enough": another retro-feeling track, this time which features a sassy saxophone. CB is trite and pleads for forgiveness in spite of what his lover's friends say ("tell them girls that's with you 'go ahead and mind your business'"). See also "Sorry 2004" by Ruben Studdard.

"Juice":c a frantic dancehall beat + desperate falsetto = a surprisingly inconsequential song.

"You Like That": a more graphic take on CB's typical sex-anthem ("Put it in your body"), CB encourages a shy lover to open up, literally, to him. Definitely one for the boudoir and/or running playlist.

"Troubled Waters": This song begins the 7-song series that borders on or directly hits on themes of infidelity. Here CB adopts a very dated aesthetic to entreat his lover to emotionally disconnect from her inattentive partner. The song has a very old fashioned feel, like something Lionel Richie would sing. A really nice transition at this point in the album if you've gotten fatigued by the emotional upheaval of the first half.

"Take a Risk": This song feels very poppy compared to the rest of the album, while still having a syncopated Caribbean feel. I imagine the object of the previous "Troubled Waters" is now being asked to leave her stable relationship and "free fall" with her side man. While CB never directly references a main man, this song's position does bring this person into question. And presenting an ultimatum is great way to scare off a skittish person, as he sees here.

"Lurkin'": here CB and Tory Lanez attempt to seduce a woman with their promises of physical satisfaction compounded with a possible threat of stalking and harm ("Call it murder...oh she gon' learn her lesson"). TL seems to have a lot of dancehall songs and features, and I think it's his best range, as this song shows.

"Trust Issues/Act In": The third double track on the album, the song begins with CB opening up about his insecurities about being in a committed relationship, likely because of his own past. He sublimates this by assuming this woman is in a relationship ("He can't love you like I love you") and saying this is why it will be hard for him to fully commit. It's an easy and wavy groove that blends neatly into the next track. "Act In" is more confrontational ("I just want the truth...just tell me the truth") and seems to betray the ease of his acceptance on this track's opener. Even so, he still seems otherwise unconcerned ("You ain't gotta act like you a good girl for me"). Together the two are a very vibe-y duo well suited for our hookup culture.

"Cheetah": No surprises here. The song opens a bit like "2012" with the tonal synth chords tapping in the background. Weirdly, CB seems upset that the girl he fell for is a cheater, but I guess he's trying to be inclusive? Either way, kind of a vocal stretch for him, as he hits on the upper limit of his natural range, so the song feels strained.

"Undecided": This was the first video of this album, and really gave the impression that the album was going to be a poppy departure from the more rap/hip-hop feel of HBONFM. Here he admits to being vulnerable ("You know that pussy is my weakness") and unsure ("I don't wanna feel the way I do, but I like it"). Hearing the previous few songs, you can understand why it might be difficult for him to settle down. Nice to have a song with a lot of "do-do-do's" and vocal ad-libs.

"BP/No Judgment": "BP" is product placement for CB's clothing brand, Black Pyramid. It's actually quite a vain track, all told, since he compliments his lover when she wears his clothes ("Sorry you're gorgeous, you're beautiful...in these designer clothes"). This is a more modern hip-hop jam that fits in with other materialistic tracks (See also "Cool Back" - Kid Ink). "No Judgment" makes a slight switch in tempo, but harkens to the previous themes of infidelity, keeping the focus on the woman's indiscretions ("It ain't really wrong if you love somebody...if you really love somebody else"). It's a really catchy song that makes the previous 3" commercial more bearable.

"Side Nigga": To cap it all off, CB comes right out with "Side Nigga" as his final plea to keep his partner from giving up on their "relationship". He talks about the girl as if they're really together, and almost pathetically ("No matter what, Imma give her all my love. She a pain in the butt..."). It's the most humble song for him to sing, basically to vie for the 2nd Place trophy in this girl's heart. But the toe-tapping beat and lyrical delays make those sad themes feel quite bearable.

"Throw It Back": This song is basically what "All I Want" pretended it was going to be in the beginning. CB returns to the a tried and true practice of making a bedroom slapper with the nostalgic bedroom bass riff. Just a fun song.

"All On Me": I think this song is here because CB couldn't find a better place to put it. Though, I would argue that before "Emerald" or after "Burgundy" might have been a better fit. Here CB talks about coping with difficult break-ups and tough life situations ("I've been praying and bleeding and begging and pleading) presumably inspired by events in his actual life. In line with the spirituality theme of the album, we first hear CB reference a his relationship to his higher power ("Need to hear from God now...all my flaws and sins"). Not the easiest song to listen to right after "Throw It Back", and truth be told I usually skip it for that reason.

"Sexy": This song was invented to make you horny, featuring vocal Viagra, Trey Songz. The way he says "pussy" is something else ("Pussy good, pussy splashing...pussy super fantastic"). I just imagine the two of them inviting a few girls into the studio to...help them get inspiration for the spirit behind this song.

"Early 2k": Here is a Spotify playlist of every song CB and Tank reference. Get ready for a throwback.

"Dear God": The irony of the song is that CB misconstrues God in the traditional sense with our ideas of alien life ("Starship is falling", "Beam me up"). This is a contemplative song that sort of signals the bigger questions rounding out the spiritual pilgrimage that is "Indigo". The beat is quite minimalistic and hangs off CB's treaties in a very elegant way.

"Part of the Plan": Almost by tradition, CB throws in a song about his past relationship failures with Rihanna ("I tried to do right but I lost my cool...and I don't understand why it had to be you") and his subsequent public flagellation ("...they always need a bad guy"). However, the tender father in him comes out ("Then you came along and changed my life...and showed me that I'm Royalty"). The song feels a little cheesy, and at this point, his apology tracks feel a little played. Not my favorite song and also a skipper.

"Play Catch Up": This is a hook-up song about a girl who he wants to spend more time with. The back up vocals are Tone Stith and are a nice feature for an up and coming voice in RnB. However, this song bumps. The bass is unashamed and leaves you feeling revived after enduring the previous 31-35 songs.

Overall, I really, really enjoyed listening to this album. I think the album is best enjoyed in thirds or fourths, but does not disappoint as a consolidated work. There are so many songs that it will take a while before you get tired of the LP in its entirety, which is the nice thing about having so many tracks featured in one collection. I've been fairly partial in my review of the songs, both in their lyrical content as well as the vocals and accompaniment. I hope that helps guide you through as you listen, and feel free to make suggestions or critiques of any of my ideas.

Remember Jin tha Emcee ? Freestyle Friday Asian rapper

Posted: 21 Aug 2019 10:44 PM PDT

Well here a summary.

So Jin was the guy from freestyle Fridays remember that back in the day he came out of nowhere and went on a streak and won battle after battle enialating the competition. He went into the hall of fame and got a deal with ruff Ryders. He dropped the album The Rest Is History a good album with some great songs but it he admitted that it could have been better and he dropped a very exploitive single LEARN CHINESE with a cringe bridge it exposed so many stereotypes and it just felt like such a sell out, he even said he doesn't even perform it ever. And in the album it sounded like a regular album for the most part he had a song called CLUB SONG BRO enough said. He was a great rapper with a sick flow and some highlights are Here now, Get ur hands off, C'mon, I gotta love, seƱorita, thank you, love story, Same cry, good bad the ugly, and so afraid a good bunch of songs but the thing is he had the potential to really make a classic album he said," at no point did the ruff Ryders force me to do anything I could've back out of certain things be more critical and more in command but I just went with the flow." It sounded more like a generic album at the time that hasn't really aged well. And he got blinded by the hype, he kind of rushed the record, signed with the first record label that reached out to him, and never really gave it his all to the album.

But still its a good album and I believe if "I gotta love" got dropped as a single his career would've been much different. Its a lot more reachable to a pop audience and it would've landed him a hit. But apparently politics is the reason that song wasn't a single. And rumor has it roccafella didn't let it drop because they didn't want to overexploit Kanye. But even then Jin even stated that when he worked with Ye he didn't really make an interaction with him while working with him he was too in awe of being in the same room. And the record is dope but he could've made a classic record. Same story with Wyclef and Jus Blaze. And honestly Ruff Ryders was a horrible fit for Jin, because you could tell he was never that gangsta dude.

After that he released a bunch of really great songs and albums online Emcee's Propaganda was a much more authentic album from Jin and probably his best. Its an underground classic. The album ranges several dope song concepts and beats just fun shit. And then the more party type album I Promise where he kind of slightly watered down his lyrics to sell more but still a fun record nostalgic too. So he was doing the independent thing on myspace. He built a loyal fan base through it and still doing battles but after he lost one he kind of quit battling but after that he made a Chinese rap album with Far East Movement and it eventually started to blow up in China signed with Catch music and he was the Justin Bieber of Hong Kong. Pretty much a celebrity their.

And with the move to China he eventually found god and was baptized in 2008 and found clarity then changed the direction of his music.

He released a mixtape say something, sincerely yours ep, Hypocrite ep, and then came out with another full length album 14:59 a very authentic record from the heart. And dropped another album recently pretty dope shit.

He's found another career in stand up.

So yeah the dudes doing pretty well now even if he never really blew up like everyone thought.
