Posted: 10 Jun 2019 11:01 AM PDT As a hip hop fan and parent, I always have had the philosophy that hip hop is basically a positive and critical art form that speaks to real injustices and problems in our world, and thus that it was okay for my kid to listen to relatively clean hip hop when he was younger. So far so good. The challenge I have now is that he's 12 and the Internet is what it is, and the hip hop he's listening to via YouTube, spotify, and wherever else is really some intense shit. Some of the values that I don't love in hip hop, such as it's very widespread misogyny, are really on full display in this music. The constant celebration of drug use and gang behavior, in a way that is actually *not* critical at all, makes my head hurt. It's making me wonder if I need to try to be filtering this stuff, and if I've been naive in not doing so in the past. (edit: or, I should say, "naive in not continuing to filter it extensively.") I'm truly torn between thinking "ah hell, I'm just getting old and feeling the way old people always do" and thinking "this shit is a shiny commercial for complete dysfunctionality and I've been foolish not to recognize it as such." Anyway, I would just appreciate any perspectives/approaches from people who have wrestled with this stuff, especially as it relates to trying to deal with it in the era of music streaming. Btw: I'll tell you where I'm at tentatively, and it's this: I feel like I'm worried about the music because it's obvious, but the deeper issue is that my son has been having behavior issues that really have very little to do with the music. So my thought is that I gotta address those deeper issues and not sweat the music, since it's what he likes. But again I don't know if maybe I'm just being naive. [link] [comments] |

R/MakingHipHop April and May Highlights Posted: 10 Jun 2019 07:45 AM PDT What up from r/makinghiphop ! I'm subbing in this month for u/cesarjulius . Below you'll find a collection of music worth hearing made by our community. These selections come from challenges, feedback threads and releases. Some got lots of love from the community and others are sleeper fire. Here is a truly groovy beat 'spirals' from Kaz out of the UK. Some time traveling vibes on this beat tape 'Gentrified Boom Bap Vol. 1' from Powermitts in LA. Check out Rob Boland from PA for some indie and experimental hip-hop like his song 'Frames.' Challenges e-luchs from across the atlantic took the cake with his 'yes indeed' remix challenge win While Neoablist from DC murdered a sample challenge with this flip We had so many amazing Cypher winners in the last two months, I had to give y'all two. There were some hard hitting bars from Ghost Tea from PA. And a ridiculous story from Kauzum of Las Vegas about a 'stolen bulge.' The above was an extremely difficult to pick sample of whats been going on at r/makinghiphop in the last 2 months. If you've got any questions about r/makinghiphop feel free to ask away, or if you want to get involved – stop by and join us, we're a pretty nice place. We have a stickied thread at the top that answers the most common questions, a daily feedback thread to share your work and give feedback to others and a weekly collab thread to find like-minded folks to make music with locally or online. Not to mention all of our challenges, but you'll be competing with guys like those posted above so you better bring some heat! Thanks for checking out what we've been cooking - keep on with ya bad selves. H [link] [comments] |
