Recommended If You Like Thread - February 10, 2018

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

[Discussion] An analysis of one of my favorite Jay Z lines...

Posted: 10 Feb 2018 04:18 PM PST

This may come off as a slightly drunk and rambling post (it is) but this line has been in my head and I've been wanting to write down my thoughts for a while. The line is from "Gotta Have It" from Watch The Throne;

"Bueller had a Mueller but I switched it for a Mille cos I'm richer, and prior to that shit was moving freebase"

Meaning; The basic meaning is that Jay Z is better/richer than anyone. A Mille is a more expensive watch brand than Mueller. Mille was founded by Richard Mille (the importance of "Richard" will be explained later). So he's saying that he has a better watch than Bueller. He is also saying that he came from a rough start, having to sell drugs (move freebase cocaine) before he was rich. Another brag.

"..richer, prior.." is a homophone for "Richard Pryor", who not only starred in a movie called "Moving" but also was involved with cocaine, which is relevant to the end of the line. "...prior to that shit was moving freebase..." seems like an odd phrasing, until you realize that the plumbing company "Mueller" literally moves shit (sewage).

But it's cleverer than that. Jay Z does a couple of musical tricks to further the meaning. The first is the rhyme. "Bueller" and "Mueller" rhyme, as do "switch" and "richer". The sensible arrangement of these words to rhyme would be;

"Bueller had a Mueller but I'm richer so I switched it for a Mille.."

...as this has beats 1 and 2 rhyming ("...ueller" sound) and beats 3 and 4 ("...itch" sound) rhyming, but he disrupts this scheme to make you focus on why he has broken this obvious pattern, he forces you to realize the "Richard Pryor" connection.

He also breaks the bar line here. The song is in 4/4,so we would expect lines to last 4 or 8 beats. But Jay Z makes the first line last 5 and the second line last 3 here. Without meaning to patronize, count the beats out loud or count with your fingers;

"Bueller(1) had a Mueller(2) but I switched(3) it for a Mille(4) cos I'm richer(5), and prior(1) to that shit(2) was moving freebase(3)"

The first line passes the bar line so that the phrase "Richard Pryor" happens all in the same bar, so it really becomes;

"Bueller(1) had a Mueller(2) but I switched(3) it for a Mille(4) cos I'm richer(1), and prior(2) to that shit(3) was moving freebase(4)"

Which again forces the listener to hear the second meaning "...richer, prior.." becoming "Richard Pryor".

This is just something I've noticed Jay Z does, he's very clever in the construction of his lines and verses, and he demonstrates this sort of nuanced writing all over his early work too, and is one of the reasons I rate him so highly. I can't wait to hear your thoughts (again apologies for the rambling drunk nature of this post!)
