[Discussion] First Week Album Sales Since 1991 & The Top 100 Hip-Hop First Weeks of All Time

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 09:06 AM PST

1991 was the first year that Nielsen started tracking music sales data.

I find it super interesting to look at this and see how current artists stack up against artists of the past so I broke it down into a few charts.

This is a continuation of a post I made last year. I've updated for 2017 and added the top 100 list. Is this something you'd be interested in me posting annually?

Charts By Year

1991 - Nielsen begins to track music sales data. N.W.A. is King

Artist Album Sales
N.W.A. Niggaz4life 954K
??? ??? ???

??? ??? ???

A lot of data was impossible for me to find here. If I had to guess, Ice Cube's "Death Certificate", MC Hammer's "Too Legit to Quit", Public Enemy's "Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black", DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince's "Homebase", and Various Artist's "Boyz n the Hood (soundtrack)" probably round out the rest of the top 5.

1992 - N.W.A succeeds as solo acts

Artist Album Sales
??? ??? ???

Couldn't find much data for 92. I'm going to guess that Dr. Dre's "The Chronic", Beastie Boys' "Check Your Head", Too $hort's "Shorty the Pimp", MC Ren's "Kizz My Black Azz", and Ice Cube's "The Predator" (193K) round out the top 5.

[Discussion] Composer list for The Black Panther Album, Producers revealed

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:00 PM PST

I pre-ordered the album to see if I could see who the producers are on the album, I'll list the writers / producers like this. I also changed their names to their stage names to make it easier (except for a select few I couldn't recognize). Here's the list:

  1. Black Panther- Kendrick / Sounwave, Cubeatz and Matt Schaefer

  2. All the Stars- Kendrick & Sza / Sounwave & Al Shux

  3. X- Kendrick, SchoolboyQ, 2chainz, Saudi / Illmind & Sounwave

  4. The Ways- Kendrick, Khalid, Swae Lee / Badbadnotgood & Sounwave

  5. Opps- Kendrick, Vince, Yugen Blakrok / Sounwave & Ludwig Göransson

  6. I am- Kendrick & Jorja Smith / Sounwave, T. Breuer, T. Chester

  7. Paramedic!- Kendrick & SOBxRBE / DJDahi, Sounwave, Cubeatz

  8. Bloody Waters- Kendrick,Ab-Soul, James Blake, Anderson .Paak / Sounwave & R. Braun

  9. Kings Dead- Kendrick, Jay Rock, Future , James Blake / Mike will & Teddy Walton

  10. Redemption Interlude- Kendrick & Zacari / Hykeem Carter

  11. Redemption- Kendrick, Zacari, Babes Wodumo / Teddy Walton, M.Riley, K. McKenzie

  12. Seasons- Kendrick, Mozzy, Reason, Sjava / Frank Dukes & Sounwave

  13. Big Shot- Kendrick & Travis Scott / Cardo, Sounwave, Cubeatz

  14. Pray for me- Kendrick & The Weeknd / Frank Dukes & Doc McKinney

  • Couple of Takeaways
    • Kendrick is credited in all 14 songs giving credence that he could appear in the other 9 songs that he is not featured in. An example being Opps with Vince and Yugen Blakrock, this song was heard in this trailer https://youtu.be/PJBmeqpw3DY and you can hear Kendrick have multiple lines with "Opps on the radar" being the giveaway to what song he's on.
    • I don't recognize the following name: T. Breuer, T. Chester, R. Braun, M. Riley, and K. McKenzie.
