Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week #239: Rockie Fresh - Electric Highway

Posted: 22 Feb 2018 06:28 PM PST

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

This week we'll be listening to Electric Highway by Rockie Fresh.

Background

Electric Highway is the fifth mixtape by Rockie Fresh and was his first release under MMG. It dropped on the 21st of January of 2013 and has features from Rick Ross, Nipsey Hussle, Curren$y and more. It has been downloaded 288k+ times and has therefore achieved the Datpiff platinum status.

Rockie Fresh' previous tape Driving 88, released in 2012, started the '88 miles per hour'/Back to the Future theme and Electric Highway can be seen as a continuation of this theme, opening with a dialogue about DeLoreans and sample from the movie on the first track. The project has a very laid-back vibe, with slow-tempo beats and very reverbed out, spacey instruments. A few songs sample a pop or EDM song with the hook, which is a staple of Rockie Fresh' style IMO. Rockie Fresh' is very laid-back as well on the entire project.

While the title and the cover indicate that it is a great project to drive around to at night, I can definitely recommend listening to this on a flight while hungover. Passing out halfway through and waking up to Thick Bitch (Hit My Jack) after the entire tape has looped around while looking over the clouds is an unforgettable experience. The song after that, Superman OG is another favourite of mine.

Five years later there still has not been a Rockie Fresh album, or, as far as I know, any sign of one. He dropped a few good tapes after Electric Highway, but has been very quiet the last two years. From time to time he'll post on his social media that he's doing features, but I haven't seen him post a lot of new music, although I haven't kept up very well. This mixtape is so good that, even through this lack of album-dropping, I will always keep my hopes up for a fantastic debut from Rockie Fresh, even if it takes him til 2025.

[DISCUSSION] Young Thug says he will not release any music this year out of respect for his deaf brother, however he will probably drop HiTunes in 2019

This is big news considering he has released 20 mixtapes/albums since 2013. I don't think he will have a problem creating buzz again when he comes back, he's pretty intelligent at gaining attention. Do you think this will have an impact of music that gets leaked? For avid fans, HiTunes has been seen as the pinnacle of his music, containing songs that have been sought after based off of snippets.

Over his career he has achieved a #1 chart topping single, 2 billion streams, started his own label YSL, signed rappers Gunna, Lil Duke, So Icy Jordan, and King Strick. He has also signed a deal with puma, been part of Calvin Klein In My Calvins campaign, and most recently been a model for Adidias' ad campaign.
