[DISCUSSION] Mobb Deep - Infamy (20 Years Later)

Posted: 15 Dec 2021 08:55 AM PST

Mobb Deep released their fifth studio album 20 years ago. It's another reminder of the sad passing of Prodigy, who started his solo career a year before this album (with H.N.I.C.) and whose verses are the spotlight of this album. Havoc's production here explores different directions, but stay in true Mobb Deep fashion. As such, Hey Luv can be seen as their answer to early 00's R&B songs and The Learning as their version of Diddy's uptown NY sound. The duo is often cited as big influences by today's underground rappers. For example, Get Away got largely sampled in Meek Mill's Trauma who strikes similiar lyrical tones.

Mobb Deep were more than the duo of Havoc and Prodigy at the time, as their collective also consisted of other QB affiliates like Big Noyd, Littles or the trio Infamous Mobb (all of which are featured here). They were also largely responsible for putting on LA producer The Alchemist on (who is featured on here less than on Murda Muzik - instead Scott Storch is the producer who gets the most gueast placements).

Their discography remains interesting to discuss, mainly because of its influence on underground rap today. But their all-time great mid-90s albums also mean that many casual fans might overlook their 2000s discography. If I would show any song on this album to somone not familiar with it, it'd be Nothing Like Home.

[DISCUSSION] Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa - Mac & Devin Go To High School OST (10 Years Later)

Posted: 15 Dec 2021 09:23 AM PST

Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa as a collab duo just makes sense from a thematic POV. Their first single, the Cardo-produced That Good stays true to this clear direction. The movie (released in the summer of 2012) was their version of How High. But both offer more than just weed raps, as this album also produced the unofficial anthem of being young, Young, Wild & Free.

Of course, the album is more than just that song, which is why it is worth discussing 10 years later.
