| Album of the Year #4: CZARFACE and MF DOOM - Super What? Posted: 18 Dec 2021 10:29 AM PST Artists: Czarface and MF DOOM Album: Super What? Release Date: May 7, 2021 Listen Background Czarface is a group consisting of DJ and producer 7L, Wu-Tang's Inspectah Deck, and perpetually underappreciated rapper Esoteric. We can't really dive into the history of Czarface without diving into the history of its members so let's begin with 7L and Esoteric. Back in the early 90s, Esoteric was DJing for a college radio station that 7L happened to listen to. The set was so good that 7L, who was also DJing in the area, decided to reach out for a collaboration and thus the duo was born. Before they hit their final form, they teamed up with little known rapper MC Karma under the name God Complex. The subsequent singles they released were met with acclaim in the underground and already featured the zany bars and comic book references that would define their later work. Shortly after their first EP, they dropped the moniker God Complex and released their following projects simply as 7L and Esoteric. I could bore you with the details of every single and album release but I don't think it would better your understanding of the group or the album we're highlighting today so we'll move onto the illustrious Inspectah Deck. As most of you probably know, Inspectah Deck is arguably Wu-Tang Clan's most lyrically talented MC and is responsible for some of the most iconic verses in hip hop history; namely his verse on C.R.E.A.M. He's always been pretty understated; especially in comparison to some of the Wu's most prominent members, but that hasn't stopped him from garnering an extremely loyal fan base over the years. It's difficult to exaggerate the impact that he and the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan had on the world of music. I could talk forever about them but I don't want to stray too far from the focus of this writeup so I'll leave it at that. Czarface officially came together back in 2013 for a one off project that was meant to be nothing more than some good music for the fans. The self-titled Czarface released to widespread critical acclaim so the group decided they'd make another one and the rest is history. Now last but not least we need to talk about Daniel Dumile AKA MF DOOM. Doom tragically passed away in October of 2020 and we still don't know what actually happened to him. Below is the official statement released by DOOM's family following his untimely death. To Dumile The greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for. Thank you for all the things you have shown, taught and given to me, our children and our family. Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off. Thank you for showing how not to be afraid to love and be the best person I could ever be. My world will never be the same without you. Words will never express what you and Malachi mean to me, I love both and adore you always. May THE ALL continue to bless you, our family and the planet. All my Love Jasmine Transitioned October 31,2020 Doom was a true auteur in the world of hip-hop. He'd weave together obscure references with intricate rhyme schemes over gonzo production to create a soundscape entirely his own. It's been over 20 years since the release of Operation Doomsday and it still feels just as fresh as it did back in 1999. Doom's entire discography is incredible but Vaudeville Villain released under the pseudonym Viktor Vaughn was always my personal favorite. The sheer amount of double entendres, stank-faced verses, and ice cold bars put it a cut above Madvillainy, Food, etc. The legacy he left behind will live on forever. He was the type of artist that only comes along once. Not once in a lifetime but once ever. He was a great talent and a great man in every respect. RIP DOOM, thank you for everything, we all loved you. Track by Track Review Super What? Is the 11th album by Czarface and their second full length project with MF DOOM. It serves as the first and possibly only posthumous DOOM LP. The record was a greatly affecting farewell for fans still trying to cope with such an unexpected loss. There's plenty of vintage DOOM here and the performances from everyone involved are as energetic and inspired as ever. Chock-full of comic book references, hard hitting production, and genuinely funny soundbites; this project is simply a ton of fun. It's also very tightly contrustected. Clocking in at 27 minutes, Super What? never overstays its welcome and makes good use of nearly every second. The King and Eye (Ft. D.M.C.) Super What? opens with a series of soundbites and a dusty bassline that quickly transitions into a bright and punchy banger followed by the album's true introduction "And it came to pass that the gods, the superpowered beings (CZAR) and the extraterrestrials all came together in concert and they had one purpose and that purpose was to save some lives so that you, no matter what you was goin' through would survive" Esoteric hops in with a hard-as-nails opening verse that sets the scene for what's to come. You can immediately feel that this is an album made for the true-blue hip-hop head. Hardest Lines "The bass hits like base hits, I'm Aaron Judge First you're scary thugs, next you call five like Karen does" "Plus you're standin' there like Orange Cassidy With your hands in your pockets, the audacity Breakin' necks when I flex like X-23" Czarwyn's Theory of People Getting Loose The beat on this track highlights the slightly distorted dusty sub bass that anchors most of the album. The Czar-Keys switch up the melodies and sample selection several times near the end of the track to great effect in between a pretty funny soundbite. "Look at this freakin loaf of bread that my buddy Piero baked today. Holy shit!" Hardest Lines "On a better note, better than racketeerin', sellin' dope Not obvious, present a risk like bending down to get the soap" "I can see clear in the dark, beauty, Imperial March All my material sharp, that's how I tear 'em apart" "Listen, it's bulimic, a demon, Barbera steez how I part the seas If they speakin' like they Mola Ram, without heart to squeeze Barely sleepin' 'cause they heart disease" Mando Calrissian This track is stone-cold amazing. That dusty sub bass is back at the top of it's game with an incredible sample that I think is from Runescape but I really can't say for sure. My favorite sound bite on the album introduces the track. "Yeah man like I ordered two tacos, man, and they gave me three" If that isn't the most Czarface thing I've ever heard on an album then I don't know what is. Inspectah, Eso, and Doom play off of each other perfectly here. Their verses flow together like water. Some of the best comic references are found here as well. Hardest Lines "The kid frontin' like he did somethin' Wig crushin' like we ain't got the pigs lustin' You a bozo, clown, this ain't a kid function" "Severe test passed, Next corner, veer left Mask told, New York City mad cold Whoop 'em like an ass though, scrapped in a man hole Damn, yo" "Yo, used to go Rambo Now I don't start a fight, freeze him in Czarbonite, Mando Even when demand's low, commando Spaceknight, that all right, Bill Mantlo Anthro, light 'pology, a Curly Lambeau Y'all use keys, I use a pen to make a van go Y'all new low, selling fifty dollar features My new low, white and blue to match my sneakers (Yeah) I get loose, swear on my name like Shih-Tzus Flip truth like Cliff Booth when he whipped Bruce" DOOM Unto Others This is DOOM's spotlight track on the LP. With an absolute banger of a beat consisting primarily of a deep synth bass and a head-bobbing drum loop; this feels like something that should have landed on a second Viktor Vaughn record. DOOM delivers an absolutely blistering opening verse that Esoteric complements well to close the track. I have a feeling this one will be the fan favorite. Hardest Lines "Fiend picked the lock, squat, shit was a foreclose Villain, more racks than triple X pornos One fall through the crack, he comin' back to get all those They lying, straight faced, stay intact with a long nose" "He so fire, check his temp, I represent like Shawn Kemp Due is paid, no Detlef, shout to Schrempf I'm a pacer, mind-eraser Money chaser, 7L track lacer" Jason & the Czargonauts (Ft. Del the Funky Homosapien) You guys know about Deltron right? This feels like a track that needs to land on the new Skate game. Though this isn't my favorite track here, it's definitely the most nostalgic. Every time I hear this I instinctively bust out a south pole hoodie and jnco jeans to bomb a sick hill on my mini cruiser. Hardest Lines "I'm hard to kill so guard your grill until it's over with CZARFACE and DOOM been pro-mask before Corona hit Legacy, so solidified that you can plank on it Your only gun's in your burner account, bank on it" "Snatched the bag like the Grinch, dag, it's a cinch Snagged with the burner and ain't seen your man since Irrelevant to tag if the swag is past-tense And karma swing backwards and drag, you can't flinch" Break in the Action This song's got a nice jazzy melody propped up by an addictive drum break. This is Czarface boiled down to their purest essence. We get some more vintage DOOM here with a verse reminiscent of his work on Operation Doomsday. Overall this track is just a ton of fun and will more than likely leave you with a smile on your face. Hardest Lines "Top it off, now they playing victim and the violin Dripping the color envy, more greener than Ireland Surrounded by snakes more mеaner than a lion's den You're talking too much, can't rеmember why or when Got you feelin guilty, Jedi tricks on the mind again Make you eat a dick with chips and a Heineken" "People saying CZAR like ASMR The Cold Crush on repeat, now we rock the Casbah E-S back at 'em, savage like Black Adam Fast track in the back and forth to blast at 'em" A Name to the Face This track was just a typical Czarface interlude with a ton of sound bites that add to the worldbuilding they tend to incorporate in their projects. This is Canon Now This is one of the handful of tracks that don't feature DOOM and it also happens to be the weakest. Lyrically it's basically a massive reference to as many comic book characters as possible and the beat is a little too obnoxious for my liking. It's not a bad track by any means but it just doesn't quite live up to the standard that the rest of the album sets. Hardest Lines "Bottom line, I'm only human, that's the deal I want powers but I'm not a superhero, so I steal Yo, assemble your Avengers, if I want it, I'ma take it Jacked Iron Man for his suit and left him stark naked See, I'm a kleptomaniac, the Prowler I confess I got sticky fingers like Spider-Man, so I don't rest And I never freeze, I took the herb from Black Panther Left Asgard ass out when I shoplifted Thor's hammer" So Strange (Ft. Godforbid) So strange is kind of a double sided track lyrically. Over a knocking beat, Doom opens it up with a verse about, well, how strange he is. He compares his mask to tin foil hats and takes a jab at Robert De Niro's theories on vaccine-induced autism before delivering a series of bars that only DOOM could truly make sense of. Godforbid delivers the hook like a villain from Scooby-Doo and it ties the track together well. Esoteric closes out the track with a very on-brand verse that's entirely about the villainous superman from Brightburn. This is a great track and the final DOOM feature on the record. Hardest Lines "Paranormal weirdo, zero care hero Tinfoil hat to the back or side, De Niro Gettin' type of negro, send her back to zero Simple figures, 'cause the spirits so cerebral" "We found him in the woods, we thought we raised him well But he was a villain, maiming and killing by the age of twelve Levitating like he was demonstrating a sacred spell If I ain't seen the spaceship crash, I'd swear he came from hell" Young World Young World is a nice closer overall but lyrically it's honestly a pretty weak attempt at inspiring the youth to make something of themselves. It's full of surface level observations and generic advice. It's the only track here without any bars I'd like to highlight. The beat does a lot of the heavy lifting here with an infectious groove and vocal sample that I honestly can't get enough of. It's unfortunate that the closer doesn't feature DOOM in any capacity but I have to imagine his unexpected death had something to do with his absence on a few of these tracks. Closing Thoughts Like most Czarface records, Super What? Is tightly constructed and a ton of fun to listen to. It serves as a great farewell for DOOM and an excellent addition to Czarface's discography. Esoteric especially shines here with a plethora of obscure references and clever wordplay. When it comes to nerdcore, nobody does it better. This is definitely one of the top 10 best hip-hop albums I've heard this year and anyone that's interested should give this one a spin.
