Background

Trippie Redd, whose real name is Michael Lamar White II, has had quite the mixed bag of a career to say the least. Besides a few early SoundCloud tapes, Trippie's first big entrance on the scene was with A Love Letter To You, one of my personal favorite mixtapes. The tape presented a kid who definitely was an offshoot of Lil Uzi Vert and other SoundCloud figures, but with a vocal presence and singing style that none really had in my opinion. For the first time in the "rockstar" wave, someone who actually had a voice akin to a rockstar's came on. Add in features from 6ix9ine, UnoTheActivist, Lil Tracy and Famous Dex, and there was a recipe for one of my favorite tapes of this era of hip hop. He then immediately followed it with a sequel, which was decent, but a bit lacking for me. At this time, Trippie was also featured on Fuck Love and released Dark Knight Dummo, two massive hits and, if you ask me, undisputed SoundCloud classics.

Following that, Trippie then began teasing his big album debut, Life's a Trip. To cut to it, after a pretty messy roll out, being left off of Drake's God's Plan and some drama involving his beef with 6ix9ine among other things, it released. Life's a Trip was a hit and is well loved by many. Following this, Trippie released A Love Letter To You 3 to acclaim. Following this, however, Trippie's career took a bit of a downturn. He then released a spiritual successor to XXXTENTACION's ?, titled !. Sounded like a dope idea, but was a terrible album. Super boring and just sounded like ALLTY3 leftovers. This was followed by a fourth Love Letter To You, which was a perfectly acceptable mixtape, but nowhere near the quality of the first and third one or of Life's a Trip. Around this time, an album titled Old Self containing songs Trippie made when he was 12-16 was released for some reason. Anyway, this brings us to Pegasus. Pegasus was honestly pretty decent to me, I loved Hell Rain with Lil Wayne and V-12, but a lot of people seem to have slammed it as a Total Xanarchy level disaster. Trippie was at a pretty low point in how the masses view him.

After this, Trippie began promising his best project yet. This project would be Life's a Trip 2, later titled Life's a Trip at Knight, later shortened to Trip at Knight. Trippie began earning some hype back with a solid enough rock project titled Neon Shark vs Pegasus, a feature on Kid Cudi's Man on The Moon 3, but most importantly, some terrific snippets. This album was clearly going for a hyperpop sound that was on the rise. No snippet showed this better then Miss The Rage, a snippet that became a viral sensation and gave Trippie a jolt that he needed. Several other snippets also became popular among his fans and some even made their way to Tik Tok. Leaks from the Trip At Knight sessions, such as Obito, Outside and Pour a 4 Up were also unanimously loved by much of Trippie's fanbase. The hype was there and this was Trippie's shot to show that he was still capable of making a good project.

Review

And that's exactly what it did, in my opinion. Trip At Knight is a love letter to the current era of hip hop. The album contains features from nearly all of the biggest names from that era in XXXTENTACION, Ski Mask The Slump God, Juice WRLD, Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi Vert, it contains the new wave of SoundCloud artists in SoFaygo, it has two of Chicago's biggest current acts in Polo G and Lil Durk, it shows love to the Detroit scene in features from Babyface Ray, Saba Baby and Icewear Veezo, and it even contains the biggest name in hip hop with Drake. This album is a celebration of SoundCloud rap, containing insane synth heavy beats, a distorted sound for some songs and features from all the heavy hitters of that era. All of this makes for what is, in my opinion, Trippie's magnum opus, at least at this point in his career.

The album begins with what is my favorite hook of the year, Molly Hearts. With a beat that sounds like Home by Phillip Phillips, this song is mostly Trippie just singing and rapping about Ecstasy. That sounds very cliched, but the result is one of the catchiest songs in recent memory and is filled with memorable lines such as a shot at Coi Leray and Trippie saying he isn't like Rick Ross since his girl spikes her own water. Following this is MP5. MP5 has another infectious hook, this time with Trippie getting more aggressive then usual. The real star here is SoFaygo, however. Faygo delivers one of the better features on the album, making for a much better feature then the original Tyga feature that was planned for the song. Faygo is no stranger to this very thick synth heavy sound, his song Off The Map being a favorite in that wave, and it shows in how well he matches Trippie's energy.

That brings us to Betrayal. One of the more controversial tracks of the year due to Trippie releasing it a couple days late and Drake's jab at Kanye on it. Even besides that, this is a great song. The production is frantic, Trippie delivers a great hook and the chemistry between him and Drake is definitely there. Shit, the transition between their verses is one of the best I've heard in a good while. Finish Line follows, another one of my favorites here. Over another hyperpop beat, Trippie starts by singing before screaming at the top of his lungs and then whispering. Songs like this are why I think Trippie is compelling artist even when he's releasing bad music. This started out as a typical Trippie Redd song then boom he was fuckin screaming then just as suddenly he was whispering about being a vampire.

Holy Smokes has one of the strangest beats I've heard in a while and I'm actually impressed both Trippie and Uzi found a way to go on it. Trippie and Uzi is a collab many have asked for and the song more then lived up. Trippie sounds great, delivering another great hook and a verse that goes good with it. Uzi also sounds great, I think this song proves that his new style that many complain about can work if it went on good production more. The following song, Super Cell, is one of the best and also most bizarre tracks of the year. I shit you not every single fucking line relates to Dragon Ball somehow. It's honestly impressive how Trippie managed to relate everything he said to it. It works though, as this song is a fucking banger. Trippie sounds aggressive, the hook is great, the production is the most over the top caricature of hyper pop you can think of and the song just is all around amazing, I listen to it daily. I mean cmon, this man rhymed Piccolo with pick the loaf. Shits lit.

And of course this brings us to Miss The Rage. One of the most anticipated snippets ever, Trippie's biggest hit, and Carti's highest charting song. Did it live up? Hell fuckin yeah it did. Of course the production is great, you all heard the snippet, but luckily everything else works too. Trippie's hook, while long, is super catchy, his verse is even better and the second hook with Carti adlibs goes insane. Carti's verse, while it could flow a bit better, sounds nice and already has some one liners Carti fans still repeat. She tastes like water. Blah blah blah "MaRIO jUdAh'S wAs bEtTER". The song just bangs. Supernatural has a decent and colorful first half but then the beat switches and the song becomes a motherfucking hit. The beat is darker sounding and hits hard and Trippie raps with confidence I haven't heard from him in a while. All this while he repeatedly screams "on my gang" in the background. Like man if that shit doesn't hype you up then you just have to be old. The darker sound continues into Demon Time, which, as usual, has a great sounding hook and an aggressive verse by Trippie. The star here is Ski Mask, however. I didn't think he'd fit on it, but shit was I wrong. Dude brings a crazy flows and fills his verse with pop culture references. The verse also provides a nice contrast to Trippie's more slow paced hook and verse, with this one being super fast and choppy without sounding overboard of course. God, this song makes me want Ski Mask to do way more features then he does.

Matt Hardy 999 is one of Trippie's best songs ever and just may be my favorite Juice WRLD song ever. The beat is crazy, it repeatedly switches throughout the song before becoming a sad piano on Juice's final verse, which is a super nice touch. Trippie and Juice trade bars Assmilk style. The chemistry is incredible and with each bar they get more ridiculous, cumulating in Trippie literally just doing a Playboi Carti impression. It's unreal how well these two work together and this song is hands down their best work together yet. Trippie recently confirmed that they were making an album together before Juice passed and this song makes it downright painful that we will never get it. I will say that I do miss Trippie's final verse from the leak though. Vibes follows this song. This is a pretty great interlude, with an infectious hook along with Trippie doing adlibs that sound identical to something Carti would do.

New Money is a bit of a throwback. The hook sounds a lot like Erase Your Social by Uzi, but the singing Trippie does following that is what shines. He screeches and growls in a way that sounds like his ALLTY1 days. These types of vocals are what drew me to him and I hope he does more of this in the future. Danny Phantom is, well, it's alright. It's Trippie and XXXTENTACION's vocals from a far superior song called Ghostbusters. I mean, it's not terrible, the vocals are good, but man the new production, while in line with the album, is not it. I get he wanted X for a tape with all the big SoundCloud names, but it feels unnecessary. But hey it could've been a lot worse. Space Time follows this, which is a very short song but it's a banger. It's not a top 5 on this album but it still goes hard. Baki has a great hook and a bouncy beat, making it a very solid listen. Like Space Time, this is a good song but it isn't quite on the level of the highs on here. iPhone has a much more lowkey beat then we've been treated to so far, but it's a hard song that stays in my head.

Then we make it to the final two tracks. These are a bit weird. They don't really fit the vibe of the album at all, they seem to be bonus tracks if anything. I feel like these two are from an earlier draft of this album, but that's not to their detriment. That said, Rich MF is hard as F U C K. The hook is insanely catchy and one of the best of the year. Trippie's verse is fucking crazy. He goes on the beat very well the way he raps reminds me of Supernatural's second half. He sounds very confident and has a great flow. This paired with his great hook makes for a great experience. Polo G delivers an aggressive verse, which is great, Polo always snaps when he goes in like this. Lil Durk also has a fire verse here, he could've gone a bit harder, but the flow was good and the delivery was there. Captain Crunch is a bit of an oddball as it really doesn't fit with the album, but hey it's dope to see Trippie pay tribute to the Detroit scene. Trippie does excellent with fitting in with their style and all the features bring it. Only complaint is I wish BabyTron would've been on this, just because he's probably my favorite in Detroit atm.

Now look I love the Mach Hommys and the Navy Blues as much as the rest of you. However, this is the type of album that stays in constant rotation for me. A unique sound without scaring the hoes away, all bangers and no sad boy shit, a terrific feature lineup and an artist who knows how to deliver a great hook.

In short: this shit slaps.

Questions

What do you think of this hyperpop sound? Will this album age poorly for its heavy use of it?

How did this compare to Trippie's other tapes for you? Was it worthy of being a sequel to Life's a Trip?

Did all the features live up to expectations? Which one was your favorite?

What is your favorite song from this tape?

Should Trippie Redd revisit this sound or just leave it with this tape?

[DISCUSSION] Nas - Stillmatic (20 Years Later)

Posted: 17 Dec 2021 08:59 PM PST

December 18, 2001. Hailed as Nas' come back album, the album that humbled Hov, and a Hip-Hop Classic. Many, including Jay-Z had counted him out after Nastradamaus. However, with this album, Nas showcased why you shouldn't awaken a sleeping giant. Stillmatic showed Nas wasn't anything to fuck with. Ether, the reply song to Hov's takeover lyrically dismantles everyone of Jay's disses to Nas. Nas effortlessly flips Jay's I WILL NOT LOSE line into a hard hitting diss.

The term ether itself has also become synonymous with ultimate sonning (ie: Jay got ethered!), and Nas arguably popularized the way we use the word Stan as we use it today. Beyond Ether, the album has banging tracks minus this track (but it's been removed from all pressings since the initial one, so does it really count?)

Other highlights of the album include:

Got Urself A Gun

One Mic

Rewind - Hailed as one of the best storytelling tracks out there

You're Da Man

2nd Childhood

Stillmatic (The Intro)

Build & Destroy

Where were you when you heard this classic? Do you remember when you first heard ether? I remember downloading the DJ Kaylsay version of Ether with the barking dogs.

Since then, Nas and Jay have made up, collaborated on more than one occasion, and living their lives. but this was definitely a moment in Hip-Hop.

Let's celebrate and reminisce about this classic!

Prodigy to Be Honored With Queensbridge Street Being Co-Named ‘Prodigy Way’

Posted: 17 Dec 2021 05:09 AM PST

https://www.complex.com/music/prodigy-honored-queensbridge-street-being-co-named-prodigy-way

Four years after the death of rap legend and Mobb Deep member Prodigy, he will now be immortalized on a block in his native Queensbridge, New York.

The corner of 12th Street and 41st Road in Queensbridge will receive the co-name of "Prodigy Way" after final approval has just gone through from City Council. Information on the approval was obtained by Complex through Derek Evers, Communications Director for Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer.

Prodigy grew up with fellow Mobb Deep member Havoc in Queensbridge where the two went to the High School of Arts & Design and started collaborating musically. The co-naming of the block was amplified by Prodigy's family, Havoc, Big Twins, and his non-profit Fathers Alive in the Hood which honors the life, influence, and musical legacy of the rapper. Their proposal for the street co-naming was graciously approved.

RULES FOR THE MIXTAPE EXCHANGE

  1. Post a comment in this thread to be entered into the exchange.

  2. At some point before Christmas you'll be PM'd someone's username. You need to send that person an 8-10 song mixtape before December 25th (Spotify playlist, Youtube playlist, Apple Music, list of song titles, etc.)

  3. There will be a discussion thread after all the tapes are sent.

  4. Songs do NOT have to be from this year.

  5. Songs don't have to be obscure, just a representation of what you've been listening to this year. Avoid super mainstream artists like Drake, Future, etc.

  6. Dank hand crafted covers for the tape are highly encouraged

If you have any questions, feel free to message me. Shoutout to /u/Squid__ because none of this would be possible without them.

Not every song has to be hip hop, but the majority of your tape should be.

You should send your tape to your user before December 26th. I'll post a discussion thread after New Year's.

Edit #1: how long do you guys think I should leave the registration open?

Edit #2: how do we get the mods to sticky this??
