Background

Trippie Redd, whose name is Micheal Lamar White IV, was born in Canton, Ohio. Raised on 14th Street, which he uses as a trademark of sorts, Michael actually seems to have been a good kid. He played sports, had very high grades, enjoyed music and aspired to be a musical talent himself. Unfortunately, Michael's brother, Oomp, who was a rapper called "Dirty Redd", died in a car accident, encouraging Michael to peruse the dream of music for himself and his brother. He eventually stopped trying to work and persue a career and went all in on music. He would also join the Bloods, which he also used as a part of his musical identity. He then named himself "Trippie Redd", a tribute to his brother, Dirty Redd. Trippie, in my opinion, has one of the most unique styles in modern hip hop. Shit, I'd even say he possibly has the single most interesting vocal style out of any of his current peers. He usually sings in a rather deep and throaty voice and then in the last word, he screeches in a way that honestly makes my throat hurt trying to replicate(Trippie impressions are fun lmao.). His screeching is the most rockstar like out of his any hip hop artist I've heard, it reminds me a bit of the late Chester Bennington. He also can spit pretty decently when he wants to. He is a very versatile artist with tons of skills at his disposal, sometimes for the best, sometimes for the worst.

After a few mixtapes on SoundCloud, Trippie dropped his big breakthrough, A Love Letter To You, along with his breakout single with XXXTENTACION, Fuck Love. A Love Letter To You is one of my personal favorite mixtapes ever and it received acclaim from critics, even making it on Rolling Stones top albums of the year. He then immediately followed this with a sequel, A Love Letter To You 2, a fairly decent follow up but not quite up to snuff. About a year later, we got his debut album, Life's a Trip, which went on to develop a massive cult following. Life's a Trip isn't an all time great or anything, but I think it's a very solid album with some songs that have stayed in my head to this day(Wish, Dark Knight Dummo and Taking a Walk especially). In October of that same year, Trippie released A Love Letter To You 3, his most consistent sounding project yet, which was released to much praise and many deeming it one of 2018's best mixtapes. Some songs from it, especially Topanga and 1400/999 with the late Juice WRLD, are pretty iconic in the modern hip hop scene to this day.

After ALLTY3, Trippie's image would falter a bit. I won't recount everything here, but him being left off God's Plan by Drake, his beef with 6ix9ine, his dramatic and downright petty break ups with his girlfriends, him getting increasingly stupid face tattoos and his "Clout Cobain" type behavior lead him to become the stereotype of why modern rap is bad in many's eyes. This all came to a head when he released his first bad project, and boy was it bad, !. ! was atrocious. It was dull, boring, every song sounded the same and was all around a waste of time. I do believe Trippie redeemed it a bit with the solid mixtape follow up, A Love Letter To You 4, but it wasn't quite enough to make up for all the L's he had been taking.

So that brings us here. Trippie announced his next album, Pegasus, and of course it was surrounded by drama. It leaked months before, had an awful cover and lots of hype was killed. I will say that I admire Trippie's artistic integrity for keeping it exactly as is however. The album got very mixed reviews, even a couple terrible ones, it undersold and is considered to be another L for Trippie. For goodness sakes, Fantano gave it a 1/10. He essentially gave it a worse review then a NOT GOOD. On top of that, it has been viciously ripped apart online and some have even rated it on Total Xanarchy's level. BUT I.... actually liked it. This will be a bit different then other write ups that are mostly singing praises of already liked albums. I am here to make my case for why I truly enjoyed this album and convince people to maybe try to give it another go. And believe me, as a lover of Man of Steel, The Last Jedi and The Last of Us Part II, I am definitely no stranger to this.

Review

Alright let's get this out of the way, this project does have too many songs. It's not too long in runtime, in my opinion, but the amount of songs is pretty ridiculous. I like the transitions and all, but I still feel as though he went overboard. That said, I can safely say that I don't flat out dislike any of them.

We begin with Let It Out. The song is a very solid vocal offering from Trippie, with him showing off his deeper and more harsh vocals in the hook. This type of vibe continues with the next two tracks, before being really perfected in Love Scars 4. Love Scars 4 is an amazing song that provides for perfect music to listen to while staring at the night sky thinking of a past lover. No weird shit, but intimacy and fragility on Trippie's voice instantly draw you in and make you feel as though you broke up with Coi Leray instead of him saying It more then lives up to the Love Scars name. We then get another knockout with The Nether, a very short interlude type song, but one that has Trippie rapping very slowly over a nature-esque production. It's beautiful, Trippie goes very nicely over it and the song just hits on a sunny day especially. Following this, we get So Stressed, a fairly decent song, but then after that, we get our next great song from the project, Excitement. Excitement is a big and expensive sounding song, with very catch hooks and verses and a solid performance from guest, PARTYNEXTDOOR. The song has been stuck in my head for ages and Trippie's erotic hook is one that just feels like butter on the ears. We then conclude with Mood, which features everyone's favorite artists that should've been cancelled ten years ago, Chris Brown. It's alright I guess. It could've been cut.

Following that, we move away from the rather smooth love songs section to more exciting bangers. Pegasus, the title track, is a solid intro to this, with Trippie's weird vocals in the hook, odd flows and vocal switches taking center stage. Some of the lyrics are, uhm, not the best, but they're are some pretty funny jewels such as "lick my testes, bitch.". The song is an immediate contrast to the previous love songs and U-turns us into uncharted territory for this album. Following this, we have Weeeeeee, which is one fucking banger of a track. The track is tough as nails. Trippie does his deep vocals in a way that doesn't sound tender, but rather angry, and follows it with a very muted "eeeeee" word stretched out for the hook. He then spits a hard verse with some great flows and even a couple clever lines. This song feels like being at a high energy show, with the end of the first hook into the first chorus being a mosh pit forming. We then end the track with a little boy laughing and screaming "weeeeee", which I personally found funny and to be a pretty fitting outro after the ride we went on from this song. Personal Favorite follows and it's a solid and catchy song. Trippie's melodies in the hook are ear worms and his stretching of words is as nice in the ears as ever, but it's not quite something we haven't heard before. Plus Rich The Kid is as terrible as he usually is in guest verses. Alright song, but idk if it should've been here. However, the next song is really something special.

V-12. Ladies and gentlemen, V-12 is a one hell of a song. The piano production is absolutely beautiful for one thing and then we get a rocket countdown, building up to the treat of a song we are in for. The hook begins and, holy shit, A Love Letter To You 1 Trippie is BACK!! That rockstar voice with the screeching and all that I fell in love with three years ago returns in full force and gives us what is, in my opinion, perhaps the best hook of the year. Trippie strains as hard as he can and it honestly sounds like he's on the verge of blowing his voice out, but every bit of that passion makes for one hell of an eargasm. Then the verse starts and, oh my goodness, it's The Grinch Trippie!! Same yelling and rockstar vocals from that track combined with an ALLTY1 hook creates the absolute perfect Trippie Redd experience. But we ain't even done, then Trippie does a calmer voice, resembling his more tender songs. Literally every single bit of Trippie's talent in one song. Absolutely fantastic. Next up we get the amazing Spaceships. Trippie sounds great with his deep and throaty vocals, as usual and then Young Thug comes in with one of his hardest verses of the year. Thugger fans are in for a real treat with this one. We then follow this with a song with other trap legend, Future, that song being Never Change. Trippie and Future's chemistry is off the charts for this joint. We get a catchy hook, very well song verses and just an all around banger. Good Morning is another very nice song. A catchy hook, good vocals and an all around good song, even if it doesn't stick out as much.

No Honorable Mentions follows and it's another banger. Trippie does a very Migos-esque flow and he does it very well. Quavo then stops by and gives us perhaps his best verse since 2018, then Lil Mosey comes and he, surprisingly, isn't absolutely awful like he usually is, he's not great but he's a nice enough verse filler. The song bangs. Up next we have I Got You. Trippie gives us some good vocals along with a pretty unique flow, talking about love and all that. However, the star hear is Busta Rhymes, who gives a very funny sounding verse with his weird voice, that serves a very nice and very weird contrast to Trippie's melodic and more emo style delivery. It's a very jarring song, but a very interesting one and I like it a lot. Too Fly and Red Beam are alright I guess, but I think they could've been left off. Pretty interesting to have Sean Kingston of all people feature on Red Beam though. We then arrive at Oomps Revenge Part II, which is yet another banger. Trippie raps very well and gives us a very nice flow. It's not quite as good as Part 1, but Trippie's delivery, flow and impressive rap ability definitely sticks out. Take One is mostly filler. Not bad at all, just seems more like a loosie. Sleepy Hollow follows and boy is it a banger. The production is awesome, the flows are awesome and the song is just tough as nails and is very spooky sounding. Definitely a smart single choice. Kid That Didd is a fucking BANGER! Trippie gives us his Grinch style screaming and it is absolute mosh pit fuel. He also gives a good hook along with epic sounding production. Future then returns and gives a solid verse, with his monotone voice contrasting Trippie's yelling. Doe Boy also does his thing, though he feels a bit unnecessary. Don is a nice little song, I enjoyed it, but it's definitely not one of the stand outs, but the next song, hoooooo boy.

Hell Rain is the best song Trippie has ever made. I mean every fucking bit of that. The song begins with an absolutely gorgeous hook by Hoodybaby, a very introspective one about how he feels everything he involves himself in gets ruined. Trippie then drops an amazing verse that is also a tad introspective, focusing on how he's no longer able to have a 9 to 5 and how his belief in God isn't the best, as he sins so much in his lifestyle. He then gives us possibly the most difficult to mimic sounding lines I've heard an a while, as he screeched line after line to the point where it sounds like his vocals are about to absolutely shatter. The verse was made in 2017, during the same sessions as Fuck Love and this revisit to that era was amazing. We then get the signatures "I Love Trippie Redd" adlib LAYERED over Lil Wayne's lighter flick. I instantly got chills hearing that. Wayne gives a good verse that is lightly dipped in autotune to make for a silky smooth flow over the production. His verse is also a bit introspective, talking about how he's a "poor soul" due to his heavy drug use. Hoodybaby finishes with his hook and then we get a gorgeous slowed down outro. The fact that Trippie is on a song with Wayne is so inspirational, as that's his biggest idol and this song clearly means a lot to him, as he's been waiting for years to release it. Man, this song is just so special. TR666 follows and it's also from 2017. Trippie's mom reads a Bible verse to start, which contrasts the title. Trippie then gives one of the best hooks in modern history and it is absolutely beautiful. Like this is the type of shit to make a grown man tear up. Swae Lee also gives a very good verse, but the song never comes out of Trippie's hands. Man, this song is such a vibe. We finish out with a great closer, Sun God, which features Myiah Lynnae like the intro track, bringing the project full circle.

A very solid album in my opinion. One that shows Trippie and every skill at his disposal very well. One that also presents us with many eras of his craft, as some songs date back to 2017. I implore everyone who enjoys Trippie and didn't like this album to listen to it again. It is truly impressive the skill range that is presented here and Trippie's vocals are amazing. The lyrics are not great or even good on parts, but there is so much passion to Trippie's music that is missing from other artists. I am shocked at the viciously negative response and definitely think a lot of people may have been too harsh and maybe some were even biased as soon as they saw the number of tracks. This is NOT my AOTY, nor is it in my top 5 or even 10, shit it may not even be in my top 20!! However, I felt it was necessary to write up why I enjoyed this album and maybe others can see my POV. This is a body of work that deserves much more respect then it got and I hope more people come around to it.

Pete Rosenberg & Cipha Sounds have Peanut Butter Wolf, Just Blaze, Hannibal Buress, Onyx, and more on their podcast on their Juan Ep is Dead podcast to discuss DOOM's death, the making Madvilliany, the status of its sequel. Wolf says DOOM was always telling him it's 85% done.

https://redcircle.com/shows/juan-ep-is-dead

Article about Madvilliany sequel:

"He was probably the first person I looked up to that I actually started working with," the label founder admits while recalling the rapper's arrival in Los Angeles to record Madvillainy, his classic 2oo4 collaborative album with Madlib. From there, Wolf takes Pete and Cipha through the stages of Madvillainy's development (from fringe side-project to EP to its final, nearly-flawless form,) what it was like juggling the releases of that album and Champion Sound (Madlib's other high-profile collaborative album with J Dilla,) and how Madvillainy outperformed the lone Jaylib album even with DOOM refusing to take advantage of the marketing budget he was offered.

After delving into his personal relationship with DOOM: the near-human, Wolf pivots to the prospects of a long-awaited and oft-rumored sequel to Madvillainy. "DOOM was always telling me 'It's 85% done, it's 85% done.' That was the magic number," Wolf recounts before revealing the rapper did eventually send back 11 songs in 2009. However, even then DOOM insisted he wait to release anything until "a few more songs" were done. And in true Villain fashion, the longer Wolf waited, the more of the submitted verses would pop up on other people's albums or leaked to Youtube. And once too much time passed it was unclear what could even be included in a proper Madvillainy follow-up. "I got a little frustrated, and I was just like, you know, 'It's gonna happen when it's gonna happen.' I don't wanna be the guy to force creativity or anything," Wolf adds, half lamenting not taking Chris Lighty's "just give me the fucking album" approach to the delivery of A Tribe Called Quest's The Love Movement. "I don't know what we're going to do with those tracks" Wolf confesses. He does claim to have the green light from DOOM's team and family to collect the completed material into one batch, but sounds unsure of how he'll package it.

The Stone Throw chief capped an episode with appearances from Bobbito Garcia and Kurious Jorge, two members of The Villain's inner circle who discussed the rapper's life, legacy, and witnessing his transformation.
