Posted: 25 Jan 2021 11:38 PM PST

We're kicking of 2021 with the best songs of 2020. Songs posted must be released between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Meaning if a song came out on an album early in 2020 but was released as a single before 2020, (i.e. Moneybagg Yo's All Dat; Morrow, Nice to Have, and Under the Moon by 070 Shake; Jay Electronica's Shiny Suit Theory) it won't be elligible. Same rules listed below still apply

Here's how this works:

• One song per comment.

• The thread will be put into contest mode (randomized comment order).

• Upvote the songs you like.

• Please don't downvote!

Search/use ctrl+f to see if anyone posted the song already.

• Try to limit yourself to posting one or two songs.

• Please post a link with your song.

• The 10 songs with the most upvotes will be HHH Top Ten.

• Have fun!

Here is is our spreadsheet with all past results, made by /u/elektrikg33k.

Our upcoming schedule:

[DISCUSSION] Remakes and covers in hip-hop

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:51 PM PST

I recently came back to Cardi B's Invasion of Privacy (an album I'm unashamed to say I thoroughly enjoy) and got reminded how three of the four first tracks on it sample or interpolate other people's songs so heavily that you might quit the album right there thinking it's completely derivative. Well, there are two ways to look at that, so let's talk about it.

The opener, Get Up 10 bears a striking resemblance to Meek Mill's Dreams and Nightmares. While not taking any elements directly, the structure and story of the former mirrors the latter, just from a female perspective. Bickenhead doesn't even try to hide its kinship to Project Pat's banger of (basically) the same name. And then, of course, she caused waves with Bodak Yellow by some would say biting Kodak's No Flockin.

But hey, fuck Cardi, right? She's a culture vulture and a joke of a rapper for that. Well, no, because this happens all the damn time. I can name several songs by less controversial artists off the top of my head that do a similar thing:

A$AP Ferg - Plain Jane and Three 6 Mafia - Slob On My Knob

Rae Sremmurd - Powerglide and Three 6 Mafia - Side To Side

Rico Nasty - Countin' Up and N.O.R.E. - Superthug

Rico Nasty - Hatin and Jay-Z - Dirt Off Your Shoulders

Now, what exactly is done here is hard to define because it's the flow in one track, the beat in the other and the hook in the third, but there is something unifying about these songs, and I'd argue the intent is to at least pay homage. So I call this a remake.

And here are some questions to discuss:

  • What do you think of this phenomenon in general? Are there some criteria that make you look at such a song favorably or unfavorably?

  • What are your favorite example of a remake? What's so special about it?

  • What's your least favorite example? Why is it bad and disgraceful?

  • Why does that tend to happen to Three 6 Mafia that much, aside from their obvious influence? Being inspired is one thing, taking elements of a song directly and without changing basically anything is another.
